If you’ve struggled to follow Jesus by veering away from the gospel into duty-bound legalism or moralistic indifference, then this book is for you! Fight Clubs is a radical call to fight the fight of faith in the strength of the gospel. In it Jonathan Dodson calls us to join the fight against sin, legalism, and license by looking to Christ and His gospel. Fight Clubs equips us to fight by exposing the fleeting promises of sin and drawing us into the grace-saturated promises of God. Displacing defective forms of discipleship, Dodson keeps the gospel at the center by tapping into various layers of biblical motivations to promote joyful obedience to Christ. He also provides a strategy to fight sin as the church, small fighting communities called Fight Clubs. Read this book; form a “fight club”; and start fighting in the joy of the gospel.

Fight Clubs: Gospel-Centered Discipleship Reviews

In Jonathan Dodson’s book, Fight Clubs, Jonathan urges every believer in Jesus Christ to fight the good fight of faith. To pursue holiness and righteousness in the sight of God. And that most churches in America have been missing out on what discipleship means.

Jonathan emphasizes our need for placing the Gospel at the center of our discipleship. Without Jesus at the center, there can’t be true transformation and life change. We will fall back onto legalistic rituals and traditions. Not achieve true life change.

Jonathan pushes for a need for Fight Clubs in our churches.

“Fight Clubs are small, simple groups of 2-3 that meet regularly to help one another beat up the flesh and believe in the promises of God.” (p. 45)

They’re called to challenge, encourage, and defeat sin together. They aren’t supposed to replace small groups. But are supposed to be intentional discipleship centered around the Gospel.

There are only three rules of Fight Club that Jonathan lays out:

    Know your Sin
    Fight your Sin
    Trust your Savior

When people encounter these three things with their Fight Clubs, we encounter true life change centered around the Gospel.

This short work was a gem I wasn’t expecting. Packed full of truth and practical insights, Jonathan has provided valuable words into achieving Biblical Gospel Centered Discipleship.

Anyone looking to achieve a new level of discipleship, to battle the sin in their lives, and to fight the good fight with others around them, I highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5.

Our spiritual war is a war against the flesh, that lingering vestige of our pre-Christian lives that must be beat to death so that we can live in the fullness of life given to us in Jesus. (p. 44)

Our culture is inundated with violence, with some ideas being noble, and many not. Most of us have images we are "fighting" for; weight loss, intellect, career, etc. And many are not bad, but our main objective is to strive to become like Christ. Opting out of the fight disqualifies you as an image bearer

For the most part he writes about practical ways to live the gospel in community, and how to fight sin, and love the church.

He also describes what his vision of a Fight Club should look like and some simple rules to adhere to.

Over all its a short booklet intended to help groups of Fight Clubs get focused and stay on track. Fight Clubs are groups of 2-3 people who gather often to pray and encourage each other.
