These 15 essays investigate comic books and graphic novels, beginning with the early development of these media. The essays also place the work in a cultural context, addressing theory and terminology, adaptations of comic books, the superhero genre, and comic books and graphic novels that deal with history and nonfiction. By addressing the topic from a wide range of perspectives, the book offers readers a nuanced and comprehensive picture of current scholarship in the subject area.

The Rise and Reason of Comics and Graphic Literature: Critical Essays on the Form Reviews

  • Jesse Prevoo

While it is a collection of good articals/essays, the bookdoes not deliver on its promise. There ar almost no essayson the form of comics. Notableexceptions are Forceville et al's Balloonics and Dony and Van Linthout's Comics, Trauma and Cultural Memory(ies) of 9/11. The other essays seems to be more case-studies and sometimes even come across as trying to defend the validity of comics as an object of study.

All in all, a good book whose subtitle should have been Critical essays about Comics

  • Megen

A solid book of essays for beginning comics scholars. Despite a couple of dry essays on comic book form, this book is ideal as an introduction to studying comics as a literary critic. The many examples of ways the form and themes of comics influence the narrative and the reading process are generally quite helpful.
