n+1 Issue 10: Self-Improvement Reviews

Definitely the best issue I've read. Interesting and thought-provoking, if typically cynical and depressing/life-sucks article about MFAs, great article on electric cars, boring article on New Delhi, disappointing/forgettable quad-article on Franzen's Freedom, which they call the "best American novel of the young millennium," which is incorrect, interesting/thought-provoking article on how veganism and pro-life are similar and yet endorsed by completely different sides of the political spectrum, a great review of aught-era television shows, and then some weird-ass fiction. The second story did nothing for me, though the first would have been much more interesting had they told us up front that it was a novel excerpt. Like, a lot more interesting. Anyway, certainly doesn't live up to Crane's piece in issue, what six, but what does. Better than the last story I read in n+1. I don't really get why articles are labeled in the table of contents as Fiction or Essay or Whatever, but then not labeled again when they appear. Are we to memorize the TOC? Anyway, small point. I've still got definite mixed feelings about the magazine/journal, but I did enjoy this issue. At least it made me think.
