Extremely humorous and utterly engaging.

A volume dedicated to training and preparing our heroes mentally and physically for the arrival of two more Saiyans. It's hard to properly adore these training sequences but they fit the world of Dragon Ball quite perfectly. This isn't the little leagues anymore and things are about to go down in the next volume!

I'm just going to obsess over power levels some more.
So, apparently, in the original Dragon Ball even slight increases matter a great deal. Goku's training with Korin or Kami, or the god-water he got in between, or the three years he spent in the wilderness, none of them can't have added more than a hundred to the score, individually. Probably less. Yet each time, that relatively small increase was a game-changer: having something like twenty-percent extra power level to your enemy would have rendered you utterly invincible.
From Z onward the numbers just shoot up dramatically - not just in raw numbers, but proportionately as well. Raditz has more than triple the power level of Goku as he shows up, yet with some teamwork and cunning and good luck, he's brought low. After him, the heroes multiply their own power levels enormously, yet their performance in battle is not markedly different: Nappa is more than five times their strength, and while he does dominate the field and completely hands their asses to them, they manage to land a few hits and bother him some.
And later still, in Frieza arc, power levels fluctuate between thousands or even tens of thousands, and everyone gets to wail on everyone.
There's probably some math word for it that I don't know, then, how early on even small changes will make all the difference, but you'll need exponentially greater numbers later on for it to matter.
See, power levels were even from the start designed as a whole bunch of bullshit, yet there's all this math and theorizing in them that makes them strangely appealing. No wonder they've stuck on in the fandom regardless of everything.
In other matters - the interactions between Gohan and Piccolo make me wonder what's happened in the past five-year time-skip. Gohan says his dad told him that the current Piccolo was never as bad as the previous one, and while we do see that true in the present-day, it wasn't true in the finale of Dragon Ball. It suggests that they've tackled on repeatedly off-screen, and I for one would have loved to hear more detail on those.
And while the battle against the Sayans is tense and thrilling and terrifying, this is also the part of the story where the cracks first begin to appear. All the minor characters get their last hurrah before being permanently and irrevocably shunted into the sidelines - and it doesn't even do anything except buy some time for Gohan and Krillin to not also be killed off. I would like to see a side story focused entirely on them - Yamcha and Chiaotzu for once getting to save the day, in some smaller-stakes adventure somewhere while the heavy-hitters are busy saving the universe. Alas, it doesn't look like Super is headed anywhere near there: just more of Goku and Vegeta, all day every day. -
With Goku dead and the Saiyan's arriving within a year's time, everyone decides to split up and train their hardest. Goku with King Kai, Gohan with Piccolo, and the rest with Kami. However The Saiyan's arrive earlier then expected and their power is unmatched. Also, like I said before Yamcha is a character that just gets dragged through the tar pit because once again he enters a fight but is defeated AGAIN!!!

With Son Goku dead and in the Underworld, Piccolo takes Son Gohan off to be trained - the Saiyans are on their way and Gohan might be their only chance against them. Meanwhile, Goku is trained by the Lord of Worlds in Hell, and the others go to Heaven to train. But will they be strong enough to fight Vegeta and Nappa, the remaining two Saiyans, when they arrive in one year?
The first half of the book is just ok. It’s essentially just the characters training. Piccolo takes four-year-old(!) Son Gohan to what looks like Akira Toriyama’s version of the Savage Land with roaming T-Rexs, with the idea to leave him to fend for himself for six months and then training him for the other six months. It’s a bit harsh but Piccolo eases up a bit on the kid, showing that he’s a much softer character than he was in earlier books.
Meanwhile Goku trains with the Lord of Worlds in what was, for me, the funniest sequence yet in the series. The Lord of Worlds loves bad jokes (sample: Do you have pig’s feet? Yes I do. Wear shoes and maybe nobody’ll notice!) and has a pet monkey called Bubbles. A large part of Goku’s training involves him having to catch Bubbles on a small planet with gravity ten times that of Earth - the crazy look on his face as he struggles to run after the gurning Bubbles was ridiculously funny!
With the training over and the year of waiting past, the book picks up once the Saiyans arrive and the real story can begin. But the cast have a really tough time to start with, especially as Raditz was the weakest of the three and he managed to take out Son Goku with him! Another major character bites the dust before the end of this book and Kuririn finally gets some time to shine with his new special moves.
The training half of the book slowed down the narrative for me but the second half reignited it again so I’m hoping here on out we’ll have non-stop awesomeness for the rest of the Saiyan storyline. It’s a great second volume though nonetheless and had some genuinely funny moments amidst the high octane action. -
This volume was so much fun, Goku dies but goes to train at Kaio-shin's place meanwhile Yamucha and all train with Kame-senin meanwhile Gohan is training under Piccolo as all of them are preparing to take the saiyans head on and it seems like it will be an epic fight when it begins and so they trai and the thing with Goku is funny but the stuff with Gohan is brutal but one can see Piccolo's attitude towards the young lad changing and then we have the day when Nappa and Vegita arrive and they battle and its epic, and funny but brutal too and the real power of these saiyans can be felt as Goku is on their way! I really enjoyed the simplicity and training of the arc and the future volumes should be fun to read!

This was a great read. This series is a fast-paced adventure. I am really enjoying it. In this volume, Goku and Gohan are training to fight the two Saiyans. I really liked the Lord of Worlds because he had a great sense of humour. Also, I got to see Chi Chi and I love the reactions of the characters faces when they see or hear something unbelievable. It is really priceless. I can't wait for the showdown between Goku and Vegeta. This is going to be an epic series. Overall, a great sequel to the manga series. -
Lots of child abuse-themed humor in this volume, as Piccolo trains Gohan to beat the Saiyans. It shouldn't be charming, but in Toriyama's hands it absolutely is. Meanwhile, Son Goku traverses a particularly trippy and cheerful version of the land of the dead. Just a good time, beautifully drawn.

Previously on Dragon Ball Z
(I) Goku got married to Chichi and has a son named Gohan.
(II) Goku has an evil brother named Raditz who came seeking his help to murder innocents on another planet for profit and steals Gohan as blackmail.
(III) Goku teams up with Piccolo to kill Raditz and in the process Goku gets killed in order for Raditz to die. Now Raditz brothers are coming to earth in about a year from now and when they do all hell will break loose.
This is what you missed last time on Dragon Ball Z!
In this volume you learn that Goku is with God in the underworld hoping to see if Goku can meet Kaio-sama who can train him in preparations for the arrival of Nappa and Vegeta. Goku gets the official okay to visit him and he needs to cross the serpents path which only one person has successful made it to the end since it takes years to reach the destination. Goku doesn't have time to waste so he immediately starts running and flying hoping to reach Kaio-sama in time.
Back on Earth, the whole gang is trying to figure out what to do next and immediately Piccolo picks up Gohan and tells them that he will train Gohan and if you try to get in his way he will kill them. Even though Piccolo acts tough, something in him has changed and I hope in the series we get a closer insight as to why and my bet is Goku. Goku could have killed him when he had the chance and instead he tried Piccolo as a friend and as an equal. I think that idea of selflessness impressed Goku and kind of a reminder that he owes Goku his life. Plus the idea that he may die in a year or so may stir feelings that he has ignored for a long time.
When looking back I have to admit that Gohan and Piccolo is a perfect match because out of all of them, Piccolo is the strongest and the most dedicated when it comes to training and fighting making him the perfect master to teach. Gohan is one of the last options to save our planet and Piccolo needs all the help he can get while they try to resurrect Goku. The rest of the gang also gets to train with God hoping it can make them stronger fighters while they can be a distraction as they wait for Goku's return.
After about 200 days or so, Goku finally arrives at Kaio-Sama's small planet and immediately begins training which isn't easy since the planet gravity is 10x stronger than Earth making it harder for Goku to run and jump. But over the course of 150 days he becomes a new warrior and Gohan also becomes more like his father being able to adapt himself to the wilderness while he trains with Piccolo.
The Saiyans arrive earlier than expected and all the powerful fighters gather together to put an end to Vegeta and Nappa. Along with them they bring these vulgar alien creatures to cause some damage and each fighter takes turns killing through. Through these actions we get to witness how powerful the good guys have become but also how Vegeta is able to destroy a creature with a swift move of his hand. By the end Kuririn is able to kill all the monsters and Nappa realizes a dose of his powers.
While all this is going on, Goku needs to running all the way back to the beginning of the Serpent Road in order to come home and help save the earth. Will Goku arrive on time before its too late? Stay tuned until next time on Dragon Ball Z!

Los primeros recuerdos que tengo de ver Dragon Ball en la tele son de esta etapa, asi que es una de las que más me gustan por pura nostalgia. Recuerdo que lo que más me atrapó del animé fue la relación entre Piccolo y Gohan, nunca había visto algo así: Piccolo entrena a Gohan de una forma super cruel, y eso estaba en un dibujito de la tarde en TV. Por supuesto que lo que dice Gohan, algo asi como "Piccolo no es tan malo como parece", es un buen resumen de lo que es el desarrollo del personaje (y probablemente de casi todos los "malos" de esta serie, que de uno en uno se van sumando al equipo de Goku. Creo que Toriyama hace un gran trabajo en repetir el ciclo entrenamiento, enemigo poderoso, entrenamiento, enemigo aun más poderoso, y así, metiendo variantes en las formas de entrenar y los distintos maestros y aprovechando las pausas para incluir un poco de humor.

The training begins! This whole series is going super fast. There is so much packed into one volume and I can't get enough. I felt so sorry for Gohan. But I really liked how Piccolo seemed to get close to him without admitting it. I really want to see Goku come and just destroy all of them. Things are going to get real very soon.

Piccolo's training of Gohan was definitely the high point of this volume. The rest was mostly a setup for the future fighting with Saiyans, and while it was smoothly done, and pretty funny in places, it still had the feel of a necessary preparation. Still enjoyable, though! Now can't wait to see how the big fight with Saiyans plays out! -
i think this book had a really good story line but not as actioned packed as i hoped it would be thats why i rated it a 4 out of 5.

Der gefährliche Krieger und Sayajin Radditz wurde besiegt. Doch das für einen sehr hohen Preis. Son Goku ist tot und die Freunde wissen, dass es in einem Jahr zu einem weiteren Angriff durch Sayajins kommen wird, denn Radditz hat die Ankunft seines Prinzen und eines weiteren Kriegers bereits angekündigt. Gott bittet die Freunde und den Waldkrieger Yajirobi zu ihm in den Palast zu kommen, um zu trainieren. Währenddessen macht sich Piccolo auf den Weg, um Son Gohan zu trainieren, denn in den kleinen Knirps ruht eine ungeheure, geheime Kraft, die ihn hoffen lässt, dass sie damit die Sayajins besiegen können. Doch vorerst muss der kleine Kerl lernen die Zähne zusammen zu beißen und nicht bei jeder Gelegenheit wieder loszuheulen. Eine schwere Aufgabe, die dem Teufel alles abverlangt, jedoch auch völlig neue Seiten an ihm aufzeigt. Währenddessen befindet sich Son Goku in der Unterwelt und macht sich auf den Weg zu einem neuen Meister, der ihn trainieren soll, bis er durch die Dragonballs wieder zum Leben erweckt werden kann. Für die Freunde, aber auch Son Goku beginnt ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit, denn die beiden Krieger, die sich auf dem Weg zur Erde befinden sind noch stärker als Radditz.
Dieser Band war ein Wechselbad der Gefühle. Einerseits war man traurig, dass Son Goku als Protagonist gestorben ist, auf der anderen Seite war man aber gespannt, wie das Leben für die Freunde und vor allem für den kleinen Son Gohan weiter geht. Umso schöner war aber auch die Freude, als man feststellen konnte, dass Son Goku weiterhin in den Mangas mitmischt, wenn auch in der Unterwelt, aber mit dem festen Willen bald wieder unter den Lebenden zu weilen. Richtig interessant in diesem Band war für mich der Wandel der Figur des Teufels Piccolo. Er erkennt, dass er schleunigst handeln muss, wenn die Erde gerettet werden soll und nimmt sich so dem kleinen Son Gohan an. Trotz allem, dass er den Knirps allein in der Weite zurück lässt, hat er immer ein Auge auf ihn, kümmert sich darum, dass er sich verteidigen kann und ihm zu Beginn nichts passiert. Son Gohan lernt schnell und der Wandel von der Heulsuse zu einem kleinen Kämpfer geht sehr fix von statten. In diesem Band beweist Akira Toriyama wieder einmal, wie ideenreich er ist. Es ist einfach faszinierend, was er für eine Welt geschaffen hat und wie die einzelnen Situationen alle ineinander greifen. Auch scheint Toriyama mittlerweile ungemein Spaß daran gefunden zu haben Figuren sterben zu lassen, dass einer der Freunde wieder einmal daran glauben muss, fand ich nicht wirklich so toll, doch der Autor wird sich schon etwas dabei denken. Ich bin gespannt wie es weiter geht und vor allem bin ich gespannt, ob Son Goku es rechtzeitig wieder unter die Lebenden schafft, um seinen Freunden gegen die Sayajins beizustehen. Von dem Charakter des Vegeta bin ich im Übrigen sehr fasziniert - das könnten noch sehr interessante Dialoge und vor allem ein sehr interessanter Kampf werden.

Goku is dead and the rest of the Z fighters are prepping to face two powerful Saiyans racing to Earth; they have a year to train. Goku, due to his good deeds, is granted the use of his body in Other World by Kami's request. King Kai agrees to train Goku in the planet's 10x gravity to strengthen him for the Saiyan's arrival. Piccolo has taken young Gohan under his wing for rigorous training...having the 4 year old fend for himself in the wilderness for 6 months before deeming him worthy enough to train in combat. Finally, Yamcha, Yajirobe, Kuririn, and Tien all train with Kami and Mr. Popo. I was a bit disappointed in how the training segments were glossed over to a mere few panels when so much time was dedicated to this segment in the anime.
When Nappa and Vegeta do arrive, they waste no time in blasting away an entire city. Met with our heroes it's clear they surpass them in every way. Summoning small creatures the Z Fighters are quickly overwhelmed and outmatched. And it's taking Goku forever to show up. Yamcha is killed early on in the battle.
Volume 2 had an awkward pacing but the story is still intriguing. New fans shouldn't have an issue following along but this felt like a heavily transitional volume to the larger arc. -
After reading this Dragon Ball volume, I can confidently say that this manga is captivating and fun to read. Its plot is interesting and the many characters in this have a purpose due to the personalities they have. The book has a balance of action and character development throughout the story.
The best thing about this book is the action and suspense that the author was good at creating in certain situations. It grasped your attention and entertained with dialogue that felt meaningful. in addition, the art and drawings gave you a way of perceiving the scenario that was being told. It led you to the right path of the story and it kept on going forward
to results that made sense. -
It's a pretty bold choice to have your main character die at the very beginning of a series, but luckily there are hardly any stakes in DBZ as people can just get wished back to life, phew. This volume consists almost entirely of Goku running somewhere, people shouting out meaningless power levels and Gohan having a Bad Time (could really be any volume in this series to be fair!) - so fun. Goku running along the dragon road is one of the things I most remember from watching the anime about 15 years ago. Mr Popo's character design is rough though, oof.

In preparation for the Saiyan's arrival, the heroes spend the year training to be better prepared. A lot of it is skipped over, which is understandable to keep it from being too repetitive, although the most interesting bits are Piccolo with Son Gohan. After seeing Demon Junior being so antagonistic in the previous series, it's good to see him becoming more of a heroic figure. Once the Saiyans do arrive, the fighting begins and it's fantastic to see how all that training still leaves the characters struggling.

I'm very much enjoying this Manga so far. Epic fights. Little bit of humor thrown in. And good characters. It's really fun watching them grow and it's really fun reading this series having not really seen anything in DragonBall Z at all. All of this is new to me. Learning who Raditz is. And Vegeta and Nappa. All names I've heard before but didn't really know who or what they did. I can see why this is such a wildly popular series.

I can already see small shifts in the improvement of Toriyama's art. Not that it wasn't great before. And I'm super excited to get back into the Sayain arc. I forgot that back in the day, power levels mattered, and they used Scouters. (Fun fact, I actually own one of those fancy Scouters. Got it in Japan one time). Love seeing basically baby Goku start to become the great warrior we know he'll become.
