Tales from a Not-So-Talented Pop Star (Dork Diaries, #3) Reviews

One of Nikki's best traits is that she is a good friend who tries to help as much as she can. That is one of the best lessons, aside from handling bullies, that kids will learn through this book (series).

I read Dork Diaries #3, by Rachel Russell. It is a fiction story about a girl named Nikki J. Maxwell. I think she is kind. She has brown hair and has no designer clothing, unlike Mackenzie. Mackenzie is the mean, super popular girl who doesn't like Nikki at ALL, along the other dorks at school. Like Chloe and Zoey. They are Nikki's B.F.F.s who seem to always stay together. Nikki says that their ideas can be a little dorky or wacky but they're super fun. Both, Chloe and Zoey, are really awesome and support Nikki at all times. Next we have Brianna Maxwell: Nikki's six-year-old little sister. Nikki thinks she is so annoying. While some think she is cute, Brianna actually started part of the problem: making Nikki preform a kiddie pizza place (Queasy Cheesy)theme song on the stage. Mackenzie also took her little sister there and got the video posted on YouTube. Also, Nikki can't ever stand babysitting Brianna because she is always bad when her parents aren't home. Lastly, Brandon. Nikki's crush who is super nice. Nikki liked him sense book one. This all happens in November at WCD (the school) most of the time. It is like normal schools: lockers and classrooms. The plot: Nikki decided not to join the talent show. But she got a tuition bill because her dad, the exterminator for WCD, was supposed to come in to school because of a bug-problem. Nikki never told and canceled it. That's why she has her scholarship: her embarrassing dad. But then it gets taken away! But she notices a poster that says you can win a scholarship by winning the talent show. She creates her own group. But is there something fishy about the bill that Nikki has been worrying about? I liked how creative the author was with ideas! She did amazing. I honestly liked everything. The author did well describing Nikki's thoughts. I rate five stars and girls in fifth grade should read it because it might have some problems that happen at real school. Read to find out if Nikki's group wins and if there is a happy ending to this story.

I want to read this book so bad!!!!!!!

Tales from a Not So Talented Pop Star is the third book in the Dork Diaries by Rachel Reneé Russell.
Nikki Maxwell has been at Westchester Country Day for about three months and is still best friends with Chloe and Zoey. Nikki finds out that the school is having a talent show where the winners will get to audition on 15 Minutes to Fame. Mackenzie Hollister, queen bee of WCD, shows Nikki a flyer about looking for dancers for her group Mac’s Maniacs. Nikki thinks that Mackenzie wants her in the group but quickly finds out that Mackenzie wants Chloe and Zoey to be a part of the group, not Nikki.
Nikki is really bummed, and Mackenzie threatens her that she will tell the school about the fact that Nikki is only going to the school because the school gave her a scholarship because her dad is the school exterminator. Mackenzie already has posted an embarrassing video of Nikki on YouTube, so she tells Chloe and Zoey that she can’t compete with them in the talent show.
Later, Mackenzie’s tells Chloe and Zoey that two guys that they are crushing on like them so they will and do join Mac’s Maniac. Also, Nikki has found Brandon, her crush, teaching Mackenzie about photography. How will she every get to know Brandon better? With her friends gone to the dark side by joining Mac’s Maniacs, how will she ever win the talent show or have friends at WCD?
This is another hit in the Dork Diaries series. It doesn’t take me long to read these, but I love them. My favorite parts of the book are when Nikki and Brandon talk to each other and when Brianna annoys Nikki. I wished Brianna and Brandon were in the book more. I can’t wait for whenever more of the books will be out. -
one of the better ones of the series, but still utterly horrific
-
I outgrew this series. This was targeted for girls ages 9 through 13 and I was a few years late. Knowing that, I don't know how I enjoyed the first two. I've been awfully critical of what I read so that is a good reason...I'll stick to that.
It did have its few funny moments and her dad's bug truck practically screamed Dale Gribble (my paranoid weakman♥) but I felt like I was being yelled at with the occasional super big text and !!!!!!:)!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was it supposed to be funny or just plain annoying?
The right age group would love it with its media references (Big Time Rush! No, I'm not too old for them.) and adorable drawing but it doesn't have universal appeal or humor like
Diary of a Wimpy Kid. -
I love her. She makes life seem so cool by being dorky, lol!

After the Halloween dance when ever Brandon meets Nikki he says I had a such a nice time with you in the Halloween dance. Nikki thinks that Brandon likes Nikki. Which might be true or maybe not. Nikki planned to go to the mall with Chloe and Zoey but when she went to the mall her mother told to take care of Brianna. So Nikki went to a bench and started writting in her diary. Brianna was going to the wishing foutain and collecting coins. Nikki told Brianna to keep all the money back in the wishing fountain. Brianna started asking Nikki if they could go to Queasy Cheesy. Nikki told to Brianna that she doesn't have any money. Then Brianna said that she will pay for the queasy cheesy. And so Nikki agreed and they ate medium size pizza. Nikki's table was the lucky table because they got to sing the queasy cheesy song and dance. Nikki told to Brianna that she does not want to dance. When the waitress came she showed the bill and Brianna refuse to pay for the bill. So Nikki made a deal saying that if she dances and sings the queasy cheesy then Brianna has to pay the bill and so Brianna agreed. Nikki was like thank goodness that there were only parents and childrens no people like Mackenzie were there. But Nikki was totally wrong just after few mintues Mackenzie and Jessica came out of no where and they started taking picture and videos of Nikki and her sister Brianna. Nikki got so embrassed that she took the money from Brianna and then took Brianna quickly out of queasy cheesy. When Nikkki's mom came out of the shop Nikki told that she doesn't want to shopn with Chloe and Zoey today. When Nikki arrived at home she went to youtube and type queasy cheesy. And when Nikki say the page there were no viewers. Around 4 times Nikki had checked and so she felt that no one knows about the queasy cheesy. When Nikki checked at 9:00 clock she saw there were 7 views already. Nikki was ffeeling so terrible she kept on saying to herself that Mackenzie will ruin her life. The next day when Nikki went to school no one talked about the queasy cheesy dance. Instead Everyone were talking about the talent show. Nikki was imagining herself as a popstar. Nikki was only good at singing. When Chloe and Zoey were talking about the talent show they came up with a crazy idea. Chloe thought that they would do chicken dance.Nikki told that they can do a bookworm hip hop dance. But no that idea was a total failure. When Nikki went to her locker she got a flyer from Mackenzie saying that she want's Chloe and Zoey to come in the dance group for the talent show. Nikki felt so bad because she was invited in the group. When Nikki told to Chloe and Zoey about the Mackenzie thingy. THey said to Mackenzie that they won't dance unless Nikki is there. So Mackenzie told a lie saying that Jason and Ryan want Chloe and Zoey tot be there dance partner. And so because of that lie Chloe and Zoey agreed. From then on Nikki was feeling left out. So Nikki thought of signing up for the talent show. Nikki was allowed to put an audition in the bands room. The talent show hunt was not going the way Nikki thought. So then Violet audtion and was selected and also Theodore. Theodore told that he will try to reform his band. And when Theodore had recuited his band Nikki saw that Brandon was the drumer. Nikki was like happy. In lunch time Nikki's video queasy cheesy was been shown. And so Chloe and Zoey came and supported Nikki. Chloe and Zoey then droped Mackenzie's group. Chloe and Zoey joined Nikki's group for the talent show. In the audition Nikki had forgot to put the name of there group so there was no audition done. But then they annouced that they can come to the talent show and perform. Finally the day came. Mackenzie group had perform next was Nikki's group. When they performed everyone loved it. Guess who is going to win the talent show?

Alyssa Mason,
New school, new MEAN girl, new crush, new diary, so Nikki! Rachel Renee Russell's Dork Diaries 3 is hilarious and of the hook.
The character in my book Dork Diaries 3 is Mackenzie, Chloe, Zoey, Nikki, and Brandon. Mackenzie's roll in this book is as the bad guy (girl) who must win 24-7. Chloe and Zoey are Nikki's best friends ever and are very good at being a best friend too. Brandon is Nikki's crush who like Nikki back and he slowly gives her hints that they are ment for each other. Then we have the main character Nikki, her roll is a sweet unpopular girl who tries her hardest to fit in.
The plot of the book is that Mackenzie plays an evil trick on Nikki, and Nikki will do anything to fix it.
When i read this book about a middle school girl getting bullied about expressing herself and trying to fit in, and it reminded me of how school is out side of the book world and i had a huge connection.
The theme of the book is that , in a middle school a lot goes on and the book is like the inside scoop to an normal middle school day in 3rd person writing.
In The book i read the author's style is almost perfect, it's not perfect because most people older than 15 won't understand it.
I recommend this book for people with in the age of 10-15 years old because and other age really won't under stand the book as much as other people. I loved this book but you have your own opinion. read the book to find out more.
love,
Alyssa Mason <3 -
This book was fun, funny, and fast and easy to read. My 10 year old son especially enjoyed it. My 6 year old daughter also found it to be somewhat interesting. However, I found Nikki to be such a terrible person that I did not want to even finish the book. Though Mackenzie is set up as a bully and a horrible, shallow, though popular person, Nikki seems to do things that are just as horrible as the things Mackenzie does. And, Nikki is just as shallow. She also doesn't have any consequences for things such as lying, other than her nervousness and fear that people will find out. Everything works out perfectly for her.
This is what appalled me the most: Nikki's little sister got a tiny spot of paint on one article of Nikki's clothing. Nikki freaked out about it, so her mom promised to replace whatever got paint on it. After this promise was made, Nikki secretly gave ALL of her clothing to her little sister to paint. Then, without admitting to her mom that she had given the clothing to her younger sister, she showed her mom that all of her clothes had paint on them and that she now needed a new wardrobe. She forced her mom to follow through on her promise to replace everything. Nikki's mom never finds out that Nikki purposely arranged for this to happen. Nikki never seems to feel any guilt about doing this, even though she says repeatedly throughout the book that her family doesn't have much money.
I also didn't like Nikki's attitude towards her sister or the rest of her family. I have thought this before reading other Dork Diaries books, but chosen to ignore it. But really, Nikki is a terrible person. The book, while fun, isn't funny enough to make up for how horrible Nikki is. -
Nikki Maxwell has a secret that not even her BFFs Chloe and Zoey know. The only person who knows is Nikki's archnemesis, popular girl MacKenzie. The...moreNikki Maxwell has a secret that not even her BFFs Chloe and Zoey know. The only person who knows is Nikki's archnemesis, popular girl MacKenzie. The only reason she can attend Westchester Day School is because her father is the school's exterminator and he worked out a deal for her to get a scholarship to the school. Her secret may get out when the school becomes infested with bugs. Nikki has a dilemma when the school principal calls and leaves a message for her father. Does she give her father the message and risk everyone finding out her secret or does she hope the school finds another exterminator?

✰ I LOVE this book, it's actually one of my favorites in the series! The book is all about Nikki and her UNPREDICTABLE DRAMA that seems to always follow her around. In this book, her dreams of becoming a pop star are far less important than the looming fear of an UNPAID tuition bill that is all her fault! Title: Tales From A Not-So-Talented Pop Star
Author: Rachel Renee Russell
Series: Dork Diaries, 3
Format: hardcover
Length: 311 pages
Rating: 3 stars
Synopsis: Nikki Maxwell has been doing everything she can to keep everyone at school from learning the truth--that she's there on scholarship in exchange for her Dad working as the school's exterminator. The last thing Nikki needs is having her friends and--worst case scenario--her crush, Brandon, associating her with the humongous roach on top of her Dad's van! Now it looks like her secret could be about to come out, and Nikki's willing to go to any zany and wacky length to prevent that from happening. The timing seems perfect when a major talent competition is announced with a school scholarship offered as the top prize. Nikki loves to sing and dance and now she gets to have tons of fun with her friends while competing for a chance to free her Dad from his obligation! (And free herself from all that potential damage to her reputation . . .) Once again, hijinks and misunderstandings aplenty ensue, as well as more hilarious and heartwarming moments with Nikki and her friends.
Favourite character: Nikki
Least favourite character: MacKenzie
Mini-review: I love these books. They are so ridiculous yet real and all of the mid to late 2000s pop culture references like the Jonas Brothers and Justin Timberlake. I loved this series growing up but I never read very far into it (only to book four and half of book five). I can't wait to finish this series.
Fan Cast:
Nikki Maxwell - Ashley Boettcher
MacKenzie Hollister - Belle Shouse
Brandon Roberts - Mason Cook
Chloe Garcia - Jenna Ortega
Zoey Franklin - Skai Jackson
Violet Baker - AmyBeth McNulty
Theodore Swagmire III - Ed Oxenbould
Marcus - Maxwell Haynes -
I finished this last week but forgot to write the review... but here it is now!
This is gonna be another short one since I have already reviewed the first of the series more in depth. But anyways, this might be my favorite one so far. This book's main event is the talent show at the end of the book, and Nikki starts a band. I can remember fourth grade me wishing I could be a backup singer with Chloe and Zoey in this book lmao. I loved it so much then and I love it now too.
Nikki made some dumb choices throughout this book, but I enjoyed that she learned from her mistakes and tried to make things right. Like I've already said, these books are pretty cookie cutter in terms of the basic plot, but changed just enough that I still love it every time :-)
I don't have much else to say. I still love Brandon of course <3 that's all I can think of.
p.s. I'm still in a bit of a reading slump... someone comment a good book to get me out of this reading slump and reading more complex books than Dork Diaries!! Lol. -
My 2nd grade son checked this out from the school library without really knowing what it was. Even though this is obviously geared towards 9-13 year old girls, I didn’t want to reinforce gender stereotypes, and agreed to read it with him.
Holy cow, this book is bad. And no, it’s not just because I am not the target market, it’s an objectively bad book. I’ll try and keep my list of grievances short:
The main character is a terrible person and we are given no reason to root for her.
All of the characters are completely one dimensional. Typical for a kids book, I get it, but come on. Why would the most popular girl in school dedicate her entire life to ruining a random “dork’s” life? Doesn’t she have makeup to try on or something?
Who was this book written for? The author kept inserting jokes about the most obscure pop culture references. There was even a joke about the time “Don’t Stop Believing” was played on the MTV reality show “The Hills” in 2006. At what point in time would that reference ever have been relevant?
There are long random scenes inserted into the book that literally have nothing to do with the plot. They’re just meant to be side gags, but they’re not funny and they take you out of the story.
I know this book is a decade old, but just know that there’s a really good reason why Diary of a Wimpy Kid is still having TV shows based off of it while Dork Diaries does not. -
This book is filled with so much drama and life problem I love it.

Me: 2 stars
Son (age 11): 3 stars
Daughter (age 6): 4 stars
This was my daughter's audio pick. My daughter said she liked "the BFFs and the singing", while my son had a lower rating because he didn't care for all the "sassy talk". I'm curious to know just how many "OMGs" and "squee!!s" were exclaimed in this book. This book was entertaining and something different from what we normally listen to, but I'll be happy to move on to our next book. -

Let me just start this off by saying that 9-year old me loved this book. The drama! The suspense! It was perfect! Now that I look back that this book, I realize how bad it really is. The story starts off with Nikki babysitting her little sister Brianna while her mom goes to look at toasters at the mall. While at the mall, Nikki is supposed to be watching her little sister, but instead she is writing in her diary. First of all, that is completely irresponsible. Brianna is 6 years old, and she needs someone to pay attention to her and play with her. Second, they timeline doesn't add up. Nikki says that she's sitting and watching Brianna, but then she's at Queasy Cheesy, and it sounds like she is retelling the story. At Queasy Cheesy, Nikki and Brianna's table is selected to do the Queasy Cheesy dance in front of everyone. Nikki dances, and she and her sister are having a good time until Nikki spots Mackenzie watching her with her phone recording everything. Okay, what would 'super rich' Mackenzie be doing at Queasy Cheesy of all places? Then, Mackenzie threatens to post the video online. I would be probably be slightly embarrassed, but Nikki is completely freaked out. She's already not popular, so what could she be worried about regarding the video? As a self-proclaimed 'dork' she shouldn't care about what other people think of her and her video. Mackenzie comes up to Nikki, asking her to tell Chloe and Zoey that she is forming a band for the talent show and wants them to dance in her group. Nikki doesn't tell Chloe and Zoey. At lunch, Mackenzie approaches Chloe and Zoey, telling them that some of the jocks have crushes on them, and Chloe and Zoey ask Nikki if she's okay with them joining Mackenzie's dance group. Nikki says that she's fine with it. As Nikki leaves class to write in her diary the next day, she sees a flyer for the talent show hanging on the bathroom stall. She sees that one of the prizes is a free scholarship to Westchester County Day. Then, Nikki gets a tuition bill in the mail for a lot of money that she knows her parents don't have. She freaks out again, and hides the bill from them. Why would she do that? If her parents got a tuition bill in the mail, they would bring it up to the school, and everything would be resolved. Nikki puts out flyers for her band, but Mackenzie and her friends take them down, saying that auditions were cancelled. That's when Nikki meets Violet who wanted to audition for her band. Meeting bold and fun Violet made me realize that she was who the story was meant to be told from all along. Violet needed to be the star of the series. She is a real dork that doesn't care about what anyone thinks of her. She's funny and smart, and keeps a level-head in difficult situations. Violet would have made the series perfect. Of course then, Nikki runs around the school collecting posters for her band, and she meets Mackenzie and her dance group. Mackenzie tells Chloe and Zoey that Nikki lied to them. Chloe and Zoey know about what happened to Nikki because of Mackenzie in the last book, and the book before that, so why would they trust Mackenzie? That just doesn't make sense. Nikki starts to form a band with Theodore, Marcus, Brandon(her crush), and Violet. Then, Chloe and Zoey leave Mackenzie's group to join Nikki's. I'm still extremely confused about how Nikki's parents don't know about the tuition bill. When it's time to register the bands for the show, Nikki doesn't have a name for her band, so she writes down, "Actually, I'm not really sure yet". Then, Mackenzie accidentally gives Nikki an idea for their band name and Dorkalicious is born. At the talent show rehearsal, Nikki realized that her band can't perform because she never wrote their name down on the application. Everyone goes home heartbroken. The next day, Nikki realizes that her band can be called "Actually I'm not really sure yet". They perform and Mackenzie's group wins, which was kind of nice, because it shows readers that sometimes things don't work out no matter how hard you plan, and you just have to be proud of what you did. Then Nikki goes to the bathroom and cries because she knows she has to leave Westchester County Day. In the bathroom, Nikki finds out that Mackenzie faked the tuition bill. Nikki finds out that Trevor Chase thinks that their bands original song is good enough to be released. Wait... how is a middle schoolers song good enough to be released when none of them have really performed except for Violet, Theodore, and Marcus. Nikki is thrilled, and the book ends on a high note. No talent show would have a winner and then someone that gets to have their song released. It would have been so much better if after they lost they went out and got pizza.

In the book Dork Diaries Tales from a NOT-SO-Talented Pop Star by Rachel Renee Russell. There is an upcoming Talent show and Nikki and her friends are planning on singing and dancing together and MacKenzie comes up with a flyer showing Nikki that if Chole and Zoey wanted to join MacKenzies little group but didn't even bother asking Nikki and Nikki got so mad she teared up the flyer MacKenzie had given her and didn't tell Chole or Zoey and there best friends. Then nothing could of been much worse that the fact that the principal called Nikki's house saying " Yes, Principal Winston here, from Westchester Country Day Middle School. We need your services for a serious insect problem. Could you stop by my office tomorrow during school hours? I'll give you all the details when we meet. Thanks" Now Nikki would be in big trouble. MacKenzie is so mean that if Nikki tries to enter the talent show she will humiliate her in front of the whole school by showing the whole entire school the song she did with Brianna ( Nikki's little sister ) at Queasy Cheesy pizza palace and the whole school will make fun of her and Nikki is scared to death that the whole school might see it even her secret crush Brandon and her best friends Zoey and Chole now Nikki has to check YouTube daily making sure how many views there are and there are only 7 views and Nikki is so scared about her dad having to check every kid for bug extermination and MacKenzie and the other CCP girls ( Cute, Cool & Popular ) might laugh and gossip about her and talk behind her back and Nikki thinks it will ruin her reputation at Westchester Country Day Middle School.

Oh these books have yet to disappoint me! I love them! A couple years ago, I started reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and I loved the way they were set up. Then I discovered the Dork Diaries! I loved them even more than ever! This is probably because these are more directed towards girls and Wimpy Kid is directed towards boys.
Nikki is facing Mackenzie yet again! Nikki does not want anyone to know her deep secret...the only reason she is at this super fancy school is because she got a scholarship in exchange for her dad's bug exterminator services. She wants no one to find this out! Especially Brandon, the boy Nikki is super crushing on! Over the next few weeks, she started to realize more and more bugs. One day after school, Principal Winston called and asked for her dad to come in and exterminate the bugs. Instead of telling her dad, Nikki said that her dad was really busy and could not come in. Later that week, she received in the mail a bill for her tuition at her school....let's just say there was a lot of zeros. This was all because she told the principal her dad couldn't come in! How could she get out of this one?!? Thankfully, she has a chance. Nikki is going to try out for the school talent show to win the scholarship back! Will she be able to do it?
I love these books! I don't know exactly how many there are (does anyone?) but I hope they never end!! A fun, quick read that let's you go into the mind of a middle school girl. -
Nikki maxwell is a normal teen who is attending school at a special academy. She has crushes, best friends, and enemies just like Mackenzie who is a spoiled no good evil girl who hates Nikki's guts. Things get worst when she gets a phone call from the school saying that she has to pay over 200 in money for no good reason.....But the only way to get that kind of money is to join the school talent show. The winning prize gets 500 dollars and to be a guest on a hit teen reality show. Nikki doesn't care if she's the guest star, all she cares about is getting that 500 dollars so she can pay the school. But the only problem is Mackenzie.......she's joining to and the judges love her...what will Nikki do??? Will she win or get kicked out of the school for good??
I picked this book because I read the first two books of the serise and they were really good.
I finished this book because I really liked the beginning.
I recommend this book to girls who like to read diary of a wimpy kid because it's just like that but a bit girlyer... -
I thought this book was very interesting because it seems that Nikki's life is falling apart and it can't get any worse but it just seems to get worse in the most TERRIBLE of times! Now, I think that when her life was starting to fall apart and she actually tried to fix it by being creative and mostly positive, I thought that it was very mature of Nikki to do that because it is really hard to fix the mess she was in,especially when her Dad is the school exterminator and that she has to deal with her cold-hearted enemy,Mackenzie!I think that my favorite part is when(SPOILER ALERT!)Nikki decides to create her band for the talent show even though she told her BFFs that she wouldn't be able to be in it because she was never able to actually read the real poster about the talent show.Overall,I thought this book is funny, and interesting and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
