A Soldier's Redemption (Conard County: The Next Generation, #6) Reviews

It's been a good month for categories for me. What I enjoy in the RS line (formerly SIM) is the relationship that develops between the characters under trying circumstances. Often I could take or leave the suspense portion. In this one, the suspense was rooted in a believable story. And I loved the way that Wade was portrayed as having such difficulty adjustimg to civilian life. Liked watching Cory slowly come out if her shell, only to jump back into it the moment she felt threatened either physically or emotionally. It seemed realistic. Loved that Wade and Cory actually *talked* to each other about their thoughts and feelings.

This is a book that proves that just because a title is a "Silhouette Romantic Suspense" title does not mean that it is poor quality. I have been reading Rachel Lee's Conard County series for many years. This is one of the best stories in the series.

For those who track such things, this is #1635. It falls in the miniseries titled "Conard County, The Next Generation."

I found the characters fascinating, and loved that the suspense elements stayed pretty much in the background. Lee gives us protagonists who have been traumatized by the events in their lives, who are learning to reach out beyond their self-protective walls and make connections with others. The course does not run smooth, they have to overcome setbacks and learn about each others' "triggers". They make mistakes. They take actions that others (who have not been given the insight the author gives us) might judge as stupid, yet they end up with a happily ever after in spite of it all.

I really love the amount of "self-actualization" the heroine accomplishes. (I never thought I'd find a use for that term outside of psychology class.) She has done her healing over the period before the story begins, but has to come to a new view of herself (with the hero's guidance) in order to escape the emotional ruts in which she thought she was mired. I think it was more realistic for the plot to be structured that way compared to other books I've read where we are asked to believe that the entire character growth is fully accomplished over the course of a few paragraphs scattered here and there.

Anyone who has not read these books may find it well worth their while to dig up a copy (public library, anyone?) of
Conard County: Exile's End and read them in order.

I think I'm burnt out from reading about former mercenaries / special ops / soldiers / SEALs making their way to Conard County and the women /victims who make their plight seem as though they've been through worse.

I didn't like Cory very much. She was weak although you could tell RL really wanted to make her seem strong. Wade was smart but for a man who wanted to be alone, he certainly blabbered his way through this story. So they helped each other. It was predictable! And somewhat boring.

No real suspense either because the villain was easily caught and not very scary because you knew Cory blew the threat all out of proportion.

I know I've never had my husband and my unborn child taken from me and been uprooted to small-town Wyoming so I probably lack some insight but Cory was so stuck on herself, it was annoying. And boring. Did I say that already? I think she liked the attention from being a victim too much. Sorry for being so unsympathetic!

After her federal prosecutor husband's death a year ago, Cory Farland has been in Witness Protection afraid for her life. On top of that, her minimal wage grocery store job has cut hours and her finances are getting tight.

Sheriff Gage Dalton proposes she allow Wade Kendrick to move in with her as a roomer to help with the bills. The tall, silent man intimidates her, but her trust in Gage and her need for money causes her to say yes.

The ex-SEAL captain needed to get away and relax. After 6 months of retirement he was still not able to get over all he had lived through, but when Cory get a threatening phone call he sees how afraid she is of something and can't help the need to protect her.

As the danger draws closer the two damaged souls reveal their past and connect in a way neither thought was possible anymore.

Loved the characters. But I wanted to love the whole thing more than I did. Just my kind of hero, too--big, tortured, reluctant to open up. Maybe it's that the pacing moved much slower than usual. imo. Or maybe my anticipation was just so high because I love these kinds of woman in jeopardy, military hero, etc. stories. Just not my favorite Rachel Lee book.

I read a few of Rachel Lee's books and some were rather nice, but this one was a total lost of my time. There was nothing going on, there was VERY little action, lots of useless dialogues that at one point did not make much sense... the characters did not make much sense; and the end was well... predictable...I am amazed that I actualy finished it (with enough editting of course)

  • Donna

This was a fairly formulated romantic suspense, but the relationship between Cory and Wade was interesting enough to make the book enjoyable. The plot was all about trust and redemption, so the ending was satisfying enough.

  • Lisa

I would have given it a better grade if it wasn't as much like another book that I have read, and really enjoyed, before. I guess I was expecting more of an original idea than what seemed too much like a repeat.
