Gilbert has trouble coming up with ideas. First he couldn't think of a springtime poem, and now he needs an idea for an Earth Day project! Everyone else in Mrs. Byrd's class is busy working on posters about recycling and saving water and electricity, but Gilbert wants to do something original. A distressing class picnic inspires him, and he comes up with an Earth Day project that even Mrs. Byrd thinks is the best idea yet.
With vivid, lively illustrations and a timely story about how kids really can help the world around them, Diane deGroat shows readers of all ages that sometimes the simplest solutions are right in our own backyards!
Ants in Your Pants, Worms in Your Plants!: (Gilbert Goes Green): A Springtime Book For Kids Reviews
-
The weakest entry in the Gilbert series: this one is about his classmates presenting ideas to save the planet. A good book for discussing Earth Day, though.
-
"You know, a good idea can be right in front of you & you don't even know it."
( Gilbert's Mom to Gilbert)
Gilbert is better than me, I don't think I've ever really done anything on Earth Day. But I'm using my own tote bags (cloth) for things, I bring my own water bottle with me wherever I go to refill it, & I usually keep my lights off anyways (gotta keep that light bill low).
This was very inspiring though, makes me want to do more.

Useful for Earth day discussions and finding ideas foe the writing process.

Gilbert has a hard time coming up with a project for Earth Day...until he sees it right under his nose. His classmates snapped up all the ideas quickly before Gilbert had a chance to think it out. But, resting under the shade of his favorite tree, the perfect idea came to him...plant a baby tree so that someday a favorite picnic spot will be full of shade.
Used for "Go Green" storytime: April, 2011. -
Gilbert and his classmates plan projects for earth day. Poor Gilbert cannot think of a poem or a project on his own. His parents give him ways in which good ideas come to them. Finally on Earth Day at school he shows the class a poster about trees they made, then they go to the picnic spot and Gilbert and his dad planted a seedling. This is a very cute book with detailed illustrations. This would be great to read on or around Earthday!

I am going to admit something terrible...as a Children's librarian...I do judge books by their covers...and I have never been very interested in the Gilbert and Friends series because of the pictures. A few weeks ago I read The April Fools Gilbert book and really liked it. Then I read this one and I really liked it. I am sorry I judged a book by its cover. The characters aren't warm and squishy but the story is good and it teaches a lesson. Fun!

This is a longer picture book so it would not be published today but it is part of a series about a character named Gilbert. I added it to my Earth Day read for second graders. The age range says 4-8. I do not think a four year old in 2020 has the attention span for this book but maybe.
Lots of characters to keep track of so not a model for today's PB writers. I however love this book and will read more of these for my class. -
Gilbert has trouble coming up with an idea to celebrate earth day after his class has a picnic lunch on top of a hill that is full of garbage and cut down trees. Gilbert's same teacher and friends are back in the book. Another great Gilbert story; this book talks about Earth Day, recycling, and taking care of our planet.
-
We really enjoyed this story about Earth Day and the different ways we can help conserve our limited resources. The story offers several projects that kids can do alone or with the help of parents. within the plot of the story, so it's educational, but not too preachy. I like that the children take ownership of the projects and really seem to enjoy them.

Simple eco-friendly messages are imparted in this Earth Day-themed book starring Gilbert the opossum and his classroom buddies. This would make a nice read-aloud book, although adults may find its repetition of well-known environmental tenants (turn off lights, recycle, plant a tree) to be a bit tedious.
-
Another gentle tale about Gilbert the possum. This time he's been assigned to write a poem, and to find a way to help the Earth. He struggles for a long time, then comes up with a way to combine both tasks into one! These books are always very sweet, but I'm not much of a fan. They seem almost too innocent, and Gilbert is almost too much of an underdog.
-
An Earth Day picture book that is easy to read, great illustrations, fun animal-people. I want this one in our libraries. Gilbert has troubles thinking of a springtime poem then he has to come up with an Earth Day project.
-
Gilbert has to do a project for Earth day. What will he do? Good book about finding inspiration. Also, can use for Earth Day conservation lesson book as well. Project, student think of solutions for everyday environmental issues.
-
Teaches several valuable lessons--both personal and about the earth. Great to read to kids on Earth Day. Also, it connected with me in the sense that sometimes you get stuck and can't think of an idea--but that given time, you will and it's okay to be a bit slower. Nice illustrations.

This is a super cute book. This could be used on earth day or a reminder to recycle and keep our earth clean. The book has different animal characters to there is an underlying message about diversity and that no matter who we are we all live on this earth and need to help out.
-
This appealed to both my 7 and 5 year olds which is rare. The writing is straightforward with a positive message about being a good steward of the planet and about problem-solving/inspiration. It's a good tie-in to what they have been learning in school. We'll look for others in this series.
