I'd read this for school, and originally didn't think much of the author when I watched the film adaptation of
The Gift of the Magi, but this was certainly a lovely short story. O. Henry's style of writing and his characteristic climatic twist really does bring about a certain joy.

Reading prompt - short story by O. Henry

When you read stories like these, you realise that O. Henry was truly master of short stories coz this story was pretty good.

A patrolman sees a man standing near closed stores and the man starts explaining him how he is waiting for a best friend of his with whom he planned to meet after 20 years. The twist at the end was totally unexpected.

A must read if you are into short classics

If you are antiquated with O, Henry and his story structure then its will be hard to believe that you dont like him. Its hard to shun a story with sensible twist in the end.

About this story i would like to say that as the story commenced i was like:

And I just knew i was about to get something amazing out of this.

However, the end was more than amazing. I was actually like:

I just wish there was something more to it, but it was too brief - too brief to annoy and to amazing to amuse. And WOW my review is also too brief. :-P

After Twenty Years by O. Henry - This is a story by the author. The story begins with a beat cop walking down a New York City street on a rainy and windy night. The cop projects a sense of strength and rectitude, and takes his rounds very seriously, trying all the doors of the shops as he passes them to ensure that they are locked and secured for the evening. When he sees a man standing near one of the closed stores, he approaches, and the man begins to explain his presence, telling him that he is waiting for an old friend. Twenty years before, he and his friend made a pact to meet at that site. He acknowledges that it is a pretty odd place to meet, explaining that twenty years before it was a restaurant owned by a man named Big Joe Brady. The cop tells him that the restaurant closed down about five years before. The man, who is wearing a very large jewel as a tie pin, goes on to tell the cop that twenty years before he met his friend Jimmy Wells there. They were best friends and had grown up in New York City. He describes them as almost like brothers. The day after their dinner the man was scheduled to begin a trip out West to seek his fortune, but Jimmy believed the best place for him to be was New York, and opted to stay behind. They then made their agreement to meet on the same spot in twenty years, because they were each confident of having achieved great things in that time. The cop finds himself interested in the story, and asks if they stayed in touch during that time. The man admits that they tried to and wrote each other for a little while, but stopped after a few years. He moved around too much to keep up a correspondence. Despite this gap in their communication, the man is confident that Jimmy will meet him as promised, because Jimmy was an extremely reliable person. He tells the cop that he traveled a very long way to be there, but will consider it worth it if he gets to see his friend again. He checks the time on an expensive watch and notes that it is three minutes to ten, and ten o’clock was when they said goodbye twenty years before. The cop, noting the jewel and the watch, suggests that the man was very successful out West, and the man enthusiastically confirms this. He expresses hope that Jimmy has done just as well for himself, but he notes that Jimmy was a slow mover’ and is worried he may not have made his way very far in New York City. The cop makes to leave, and offers his hope that Jimmy shows up. He asks if the man will leave if Jimmy does not make it by ten o’clock. The man says he will wait at least an additional half hour, because he has total faith that if Jimmy is alive he will make the appointment. The cop accepts this and leaves. The weather becomes colder and colder due to rain. There are already fewer people on the streets; however, some who are outside of their homes hurriedly try to reach their houses. Nonetheless, “Silky” Bob does not move from his place in spite of so much coldness in the weather. He is also not certain whether his friend is alive or not as so much time has passed and he has not seen him. Twenty minutes have passed since the cop left him but he still waits enthusiastically for his best friend. A tall man, wearing a long coat arrives there and in no time both of them recognize each other. He is Jimmy Wells, for whom “Silky” Bob was waiting but not for a long time. Jimmy Wells asks a bunch of questions to “Silky” Bob regarding the west and about his future; however, before this, he wishes that the restaurant where they once dined together. “Silky” Bob tells him that he has found what he was looking for in the west whereas Jimmy discloses that he works for the city. In the story, the author uses the technique of plot twist in the story. Jimmy is his guest now because he lives in the city and Bob has traveled too much to meet him, hence, Jimmy knows a place where they can sit peacefully and talk together. They both left the street, arm in arm. Bob starts telling his story about the days of his life that he has spent in the west. Jimmy listens carefully. There is very low light in the town but moving in the street they pass a shop where there is bright light and “Silky” Bob looks closely towards the nose of his friend Jimmy Wells and feels something strange with it. “Silky” Bob surprisingly utters: “You’re not Jimmy Wells, twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change the shape of a man’s nose.” Jimmy Wells explains: “It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. “You’ve been under arrest for ten minutes, Bob. Chicago cops thought you might be coming to New York. They told us to watch for you. Are you coming with me quietly? That is wise. But first here is something I was asked to give you. You may read it here at the window. It is from a cop named Wells.” The person hands over him a folded piece of paper and “Silky” Bob unfolds it with shaking hands so that he can read what is written on it, which is: “Bob: I was at the place on time. I saw the face of the man wanted by Chicago cops. I didn’t want to arrest you myself. So, I went and got another cop and sent him to do the job. JIMMY.” It is a great short story. It is a good read for readers of all ages.

    I loved this short story!

Two men have dinner, and as they part ways, agree to meet in the same place twenty years in the future. One gained wealth and fame, while the other led a simpler life. It is up to the reader to decide which man fared better over time. Is it destiny or choices that make the man?

I had read this earlier, but never marked it on Goodreads. It only took reading the first few words and I remembered the story. It is very short, about 6 pages, and simply shows why O. Henry is one of the best short story writers ever.

Love O. Henry's twist endings. This one is good, though Lost on Dress Street beats it.

  • Srutirupa Acharya

A classic short story that showcases O. Henry's talent of twisted endings. And it is thoroughly enjoyable. In those few pages, the author managed to paint a vivid picture of that night after twenty years. He explored the themes of friendship, duty and loyalty. However, in my personal opinion, I would have loved it even more if it would have been a bit longer.

This short story is about two men who meet back up after twenty years, as they’d promised way back when. A man at a storefront, notably rich based on his jewelry, speaks with an officer about that promise. Afterward, the officer goes on his way. Later, another man shows up, acting like the friend that the man at the storefront was expecting. Then it’s revealed that the rich man is actually a criminal, and that the officer was the friend he was promised to meet. The man who he saw later is a plain-clothes officer, who’s arrested him on behalf of the friend, who could not bear to do it himself.
This story connects to structure by showing a clear plot, as well as a plot twist. Each aspect of the story is well-established as it goes, making the plot twist all the better by having it set up. This short story is easy to follow as well, since its premise and plot are relatively short. For a connection to middle-schoolers, I believe that this story’s embedded messages of promises, friendships, and loyalties are interesting. The officer meets his friend at the arranged time, as promised, but cannot bring himself to arrest him as his job would entail. In the end he finds a compromise for the affection he has for his friend and his loyalty to his job. As middle school students enter a time where friendships and loyalty are becoming deeper, more complex, and maybe even rocky, a story that features friendship and loyalty at its heart can speak to them. For writing, this story can be great as an example and mentor text for imagery. The story features plenty of descriptive elements that do a great job of setting the scene and showing the attitudes and actions of the different characters. This vivid imagery is clear and notable, and students can pick up on it and use it as an example.
