Arnoth of Valenwood has already lost 2 mates in the 500 years he’s been living and although he’s hesitant to take on a third, he’ll do it to revive his people. Only, as soon as he finds the warrior woman of his tribe willing to accept him, the Tseir once again ruins his plans. A heartless and joyless people (clones, in fact) they care nothing for culture and after depleting resources on their one world, look to steal it from other people. Arnoth is captured and imprisoned as they seek to clone him and use his battle knowledge to destroy all Tseir ememies.
Sierra is not a Tseir, although she’s doing a decent job at pretending to be one. Fake breasts, short hair and a deadpan personality to match, she’s able to do what none of her countrymen have since been able to. Rise to the ranks to get clearance to the Tseirs secrets. When she encounters Arnoth, she thinks him an arrogant man who is not afraid to die if it means denying his enemy the satisfaction of seeing him squirm. Problem is, he’s also too likeable for his own good. It’s nice to be able to actually speak with a normal person again and although she is punished for their social interactions, Sierra is half in love with him within the first few days of their acquaintance. So, when he is slated to have his hand removed, she blows her cover in an attempt to save him. Only, it doesn’t go so well and now she too is a prisoner.
Arnoth is afraid of his feelings towards the beautiful woman he once calls enemy but he can’t help himself from being drawn to her. She is brave and full of life and he knows she loves him with every particle of her being but even escaping the Tseir doesn’t mean they are destined for happiness. Maybe they are just to vastly different to ever find common ground.
Once again, I am extremely disappointed with the nose dive this book took after the half-way point. The beginning had such charm and life to it that I thought to myself I had winner on my hands. Unfortunately, the charm was replaced with an awful attempt at humour nearly every second and the life wilted and died. Sierra was a complete wreck for most of the book and I couldn’t count how many times she either teared up or opening cried at the drop of a hat. Arnoth’s strange behavior after they escape the Tseir was unsettling as he seems to openly hate Sierra and the feelings she’s resurrected in him.
As I sat there wondering what happened to the story I was reading in the beginning, I realized that the author didn’t really have a lot planned in regards to progressing the plotline. It became so boring and repetitive. Such a disappointment. -
Wow. Just wow.
I started this series from reading the last, Lord of the Dark Sun, and it was a long, long , while before I found out that its part of a series. Anyway, I loved how all of the main characters of the series found their lovies, despite the circumstances and the spontaneousity of how they found each other. The humor which I rarely find in futuristic novels, were hilarious, well jaw-dropping mostly(as did Arnoth for most of the story) :D
It was a fun, eye-opening, thrilling, DEEP, series. And one who offers perhaps a glimpse in the life of every person's demons.
