Form Follows Fiction Reviews

This is a picture book and an exhibition catalog from 2002, just after 9/11. It attempts to draw a line through a number of artists - Olafur Eliasson, Kara Walker, Vanessa Beecroft, etc., to suggest that the -ism of today (or of a decade ago) is about the blurring of fiction and reality, the creation of false realities and fantasy worlds and the performative nature of our relationship to the facts of public life. This is all a great idea, and certainly an interesting thing to think about vis. popular culture, but it feels a bit forced when it tries to unite a collection of artists this diverse. One feels that none of the included artists would appreciate how they are portrayed for the book.
There is an opening photoessay in the book that moves from the OJ trial to MJ's Neverland Ranch to Hale Bapp to 9-11 and makes a great argument for what they are talking about in pop culture. And it is a really fun photo essay to pore through, if a bit dated.(less)
