Whoopie pies could be declared the official Maine dessert, and many assert that the rotund chocolate confection originated there, although Pennsylvania actually has a an equally strong claim to that honor. No matter-aficionados in both locales never tire of the giant sandwich cookies, and the comfort-food treats are enjoying a renaissance as bakeries offer gourmet versions on the Internet. This little book is a wide-ranging, lighthearted look at whoopie pies and the folks who love them. This book contains 16 recipes including healthy, gluten-free, and zucchini whoopie pies!

Making Whoopies: The Official Whoopie Pie Book Reviews

I gave this 4 stars, cause I looove Whoopie pies. This book really made me want to go buy a box of them.

It's mildly informative. Up in my area of the world, they are referred to as "Gobs". That makes them sound gross for being such a tasty treat. I was not aware that some Whoopies have a marshmallow cream filling. The ones I eat, seem to be more of powdered sugar/shortening based filling.

There are a lot of easy to follow recipes. A majority are variations of the standard chocolate with vanilla filling.

The book gave me the fantastic idea of having a gigantic Whoopie pie instead of the typical wedding cake for my upcoming nuptials.

So the one recipe I decided to try having never made or even had a whoopie pie sounds so unreasonable I didn't dare try it. The Two Fats Cats Bakery recipe calls for 6 eggs and 3 cups of buttermilk but only 1 and 3/8 cups of flour. It sounds like you would get a goopy mess. Most of the other recipes call for 2 cups of flour to one egg and 3/4 to 1 cup of milk. Has anyone actually tried the recipe? I would really like to hear how it turns out. It also calls for bittersweet chocolate in the ingredient list but no mention of it or how to use it in the directions.
At any rate, today I made two of the other recipes for the cake part and they seem fine. I used the Fat Cats filling recipe but ended up adding more powdered sugar....it was way buttery and not too sweet. Since the cakes aren't too sweet, the filling needs to be.
My husband got this book for his birthday from his sister since they grew up on Whoopie Pies. Until I tried finding the Fat Cats recipe online, I had no idea Whoopie Pies were the latest "foodie" craze. Marshmallow Fluff is still not readily available in the West so be prepared to substitute marshmallow creme and it worked fine.
Wait a minute, this is a book site not a recipe site. Well, the book is cute and full of fun facts about the "pies" so if you are a newbie to Whoopie Pies this would be a real education.

Ahhh, the wonderful world of whoopies - my mother-in-law always made them for my husband and his siblings. In truth - I've never made nary a one! But I will now - this is the cutest book about making whoopie pies! Lots of history of the making of the pie, who declares they made it first, and delicious recipes from classic whoopies to banana whoopie pies, yum! Who couldn't love it!!

Not as cute and fun and doesn't contain as many recipes as Whoopie Pies, but more informational. I really liked one of the recipes in this book.
