For Rory, his band landing a well-paid private gig at a wild, remote mountain lodge is a wish come true. He needs the money bad enough to go along with all the strange clauses in their contract with the mysterious group. The one that specifies everyone must be in committed relationships? Hell, he can just fake it for a week with his bandmate, Benny.

Jared has his hands full trying to manage this year’s Solstice ceremony with his nephew and heir, Curtis, coming of age and into his powers. Giving in to Curtis’s request to book the band was probably a huge mistake, but with ironclad rules in place, Jared should be able to keep the youngsters under control. Or so he thinks, until he meets Rory. Suddenly, he’s fighting for his own control. And when Rory’s past catches up with him, it threatens to expose Jared’s biggest secret... his clan’s very existence. The good news? Rory’s nemesis has finally given up on him. The bad news? He’s taken Curtis....

One Wild Wish (One Wish #1) Reviews

This is a great story about a rock band whose lead singer, Rory, is in trouble with his ex, who has robbed him blind. The band gets a lucrative gig with some strange stipulations in the contract. Amongst others, Rory and his best friend Benny will need to pretend to be in a committed relationship since no singles are allowed...

But not all is as it seems once they make it to the remote location. Rory's and Benny's control is quickly challenged by two of the very attactive males there. Jared, the leader, has a particular issue keeping his hands away from Rory. His nephew, Curtis, falls for Benny. Once the real trouble starts, though, nothing will stop the men pairing up the way their instincts demand. Perfect!

Enigmatic, and at least believable in the beginning. I like the way the story flowed, liked how true-to-nature some of the characters were, though Rory and Ben's flagrant actions of PDA to 'prove' their 'relationship' is kind of ... well, ridiculous, and unnecessary.

Jared is a chara that I really grew to like very quickly. I would have liked to know more of Curtis, because beyond the fact that he was physically large, the only sense I got from him was overwhelming naivity, so when he and Benny sort of matched up, it almost had a sense of border-line-ped, even though it was noted that they were essentially the same age.

The 'bad guy' in the novel is sort of ridiculous as well, and carved from a paper sketch. Kind of thrown in there to create a base of havoc with no real foothold and wrapped up suddenly without much consequence. A stronger bad guy - or at least someone with a little more purpose behind their attack, rather than simply an attempt to get more money from whom he's already basically sapped everything. My only thought with that the whole way through was, honestly, if Rory had already reported him as being a thief then why would he continue to go so far to get even more money from one person, instead of disappearing and playing his act elsewhere?

Last: many questions are brought up in regards to exactly who and what Jared and Curtis and the rest of their kind are. NONE of which are answered, which was very disappointing.

This was a very cute read, and I loved the characters as well as the plot of the story. However, I was definitely left confused at times, wanting more world-building and explanation of the group the band was playing for. It was a lot of little things that are hard to explain. These are only a few of the things I wanted more information about. The author created an interesting world with a twist on the normal shape-shifter theme but didn't adequately explain that world for me. It was like we got hints about certain things without further explanation. Overall, it was a cute story but lacked certain detail that I was looking for.

A sweet short read. The premise of the story flowed fairly well. The ending was a bit abrupt, leaving me wanting a little more of a peek into this world. It was overall a very enjoyable read.

The gig Rory's band, One Wish, scores at a remote mountain retreat sounds too good to be true, even with the weird conditions in the contract--like the one stating that everyone must be in a committed relationship. Faking it with his bandmate and longtime friend-with-benefits Benny, Rory isn't quite prepared for Jared, but neither is Jared for Rory. The heat between them threatens to overcome the act with Benny, especially when Rory's ex arrives on the scene and Jared's nephew goes missing. Will they be able to wrest some semblance of control or will they let their base instincts take over?

Rory is the frontman for the band One Wish, along with his friend Benny. He's attractive and charismatic, enough to take the band far. He's also dealing with the fallout of the bad end of his relationship with his ex, Richard. He's never very well developed, unfortunately, but he's likable enough that that doesn't really matter too much.

Jared is an alpha shapeshifter, watching over other alphas as they come of age, the celebration of which brings One Wish to his home. He's controlled and protective of his nephew Curtis, one of the celebrants, but not immune to puppy eyes and cajoling. He's also a bit underdeveloped, but still an appealing character.

As a couple, Rory and Jared an interesting complement. The tension between them is lovely, conflicting with the fiction of Rory's relationship with Benny, which gives Jared plenty of opportunities for jealous posturing. It's a slow burn that is unfortunately a bit rushed in the end; certain aspects that develop following the consummation of their relationship are accepted a little too quickly to be believable. Still, they're an attractive couple that fits well together.

The supporting cast has its strengths and weaknesses. Benny and Curtis are appealing enough (and have their own sequel) but the other members of One Wish annoyed me a little in their brief appearances. Richard was a cardboard villain who could have used a little more development, though he served his purpose well enough.

The story itself needed to be longer, I think. Although the pieces fit well together, certain portions--particularly the ending--were very rushed and a bit of a letdown because of that. It was still a pleasant story, just abrupt. It featured both Rory and Jared's points of view, but the breaks were well broken by chapter or section, without random head-hopping. The writing itself was also enjoyable, with solid editing.

Although both story and characters could have used a bit of expansion, this was still a pleasant diversion. I certainly look forward to picking up the sequel and revisiting this world.

This is the third Devon Rhodes book I have read and the first two were so amazing that this ended up being a MAJOR let down. It was not that the book was so terrible it was beyond reading. It just was nowhere near the level of quality that I have come to expect from the author.
The characters in this book had so much potential and they just sort of dropped off. Anti climatic is a very good description of this story. I will list my biggest issues with this book.

    1. Not enough character development
    2. Mating process was not explained and the fact that the Shifters in the story could have so many possible mates is discomforting and takes away from the heartfeltness (yea I made up a word..what of it?!) of the story.
    3. The conflict in the story ended so abrubtly I had to go back and re read that paragraph to make sure I didn't miss something!
    4. Not NEARLY enough sexual tension between Jared and Rory.
    5. NO background ie WHERE ARE THEY?!?! A retreat camp for shifter Alphas in the makeing? WHO KNOWS!!

I am super bummed about this mostly because this book had the makeings of a really compelling and unique story. The book sets up a possible sequal focusing on the bff Benny and his shapeshifter "mate" Curtis. Hopefully that one turns out a little better.

In this story we meet Rory Dean & Benny Oshiro, bandmates of the popular band One Wish. They are contracted to perform a private gig with some weird stipulations, such as everyone has to be in a committed relationship. So since Benny & Rory do live together and have been in a relationship in the past, they decide that they can fake it for the week so they can get the large payout for the gig. They weren't counting on meeting Jared Salinas and his nephew Curtis. They are shifters and if a potential mate is near they want to mate, but their code prevents them from interfering if that mate is in a relationship. But because of former bad relationship, Rory can't risk losing the money, so they might all have to let this lie continue.

This was a quick read about shifters. Of course I would have liked to know a little more about the shifters, but for a stand alone short, it was enjoyable.

3.5 stars. This is a good story about a band who goes to do a private gig at a secluded lodge with some rather bizarre clauses to the contract. Turns out these are not just ordinary guys at that retreat. Rory and Benny, the leaders of the band have to pretend that they are together to meet the clause of the contract. They are best friends and have been lovers in the past and besides, Rory really needs the money. Unfortunately there is a crazy ex and there is some serious attraction between Benny and Rory and some of the guys at the retreat which could jeopardize the entire deal.

I really liked Rory and Jared and Curtis and Benny. Can't wait to read more!

This was a great novella! A very quick read, but extremely well written and entertaining, with an interesting plot/setting and wonderful characters. I enjoyed it so much that I couldn't help wishing it had been much, much longer.

The reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars is because the ending felt terribly rushed. That was a real disappointment, but not so bad that it ruined the whole story for me. Just wish the author had taken a bit more time and effort to flesh that part out some more, which would have turned a "great" story into an "amazing" one.

Sometimes you happen across a story that is so adorable, that you wish it was longer. Well, this is one of those stories for me. Fluffy, cute and endearing. Some might find it on the light side, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Like I said, I would have liked if it was a longer story, with longer build up, and more character development. This would have been a great novel.

  • Niquie

This was an okay story. Short. Liked the idea that there are many possible mates. My biggest problem with this was that things felt too rushed or glossed over (especially after the kidnapping), and the characters seemed way too okay with certain things, it just didn't ring true. Wish things could've been explained better or even explained at all.

  • Julesmarie

I was very excited about this one: combining rockers and shifters into one story sounded fantastically fun.

And it was fun. As long as I didn't try to think about anyone's motivations or reasoning and just went along for the ride it was okay. Looking any further than that though just frustrated me because none of it really made sense.

    Still fun.

maybe only 4.5 stars because it was too short but other than that i just loved it. i d wish we got more of Rory and Jared together though and little bit more development of their characters/relationship

Still a very enjoyable story and I am excited the sequel comes out later this month
