The year is 1937. The forty-two year old Hungarian sculptor Arthur Fleischmann stepped ashore onto Balinese soil from a small sailing boat that brought him across the Straits of Bali from Java. A new and exotic chapter in his life was about to open up in front of him. Armed with little more than a 35 mm Dolina camera and the sensitive eye of an artist, he recorded in over 1800 photographs the life, customs and beauty of the Balinese people.

Bali in the 1930's: photographs and sculptures by Arthur Fleischmann Reviews

  • Hasanuddin

Fleichmann's introduction, i came to Bali as sculptor and the Balinese have been tremendous inspiration in my work. But sculpturing is slow work interwoven with many technicalities, its nature is such that i can give only crystallised symbols of life. But i found in Bali so much that was stimulting in the landscape, people, animal and religion...

Ga hanya Bali bung, seluruh nusantara akan memberi inspirasi. Sayang, Indonesia cuma dikenal Balinya

interesting book to flip through. good to know balinese have their own language; there are active volcanoes; and, see so many photos of what life must've been like 90 years ago in bali
