Over the past two decades, Singapore has advanced rapidly towards becoming a both a global city-state and a key nodal point in the international economic sphere. These developments have caused us to reassess how we understand this changing nation, including its history, population, and geography, as well as its transregional and transnational experiences with the external world. This collection spans several disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and draws on various theoretical approaches and methodologies in order to produce a more refined understanding of Singapore and to reconceptialize the challenges faced by the country and its peoples.
Reframing Singapore: MemoryIdentityTrans-Regionalism (ICAS Publications) Reviews
-
Great compilation of essays - the chapters that particularly stuck out to me were the ones reframing traditional SG historical narratives (esp. Bukit Ho Swee fire, multiethnic cooperation during Maria Hertogh riots, and the intersection of gender and class wrt factory workers in the 80's), the construction of transnational Malay masculinity, the role played by Indian media in promoting SG as an Indian tourist spot, and the analysis of Raffles Hotel. While some chapters didn't seem to hold much relevance in understanding the Singapore of today, the book is definitely worth a check out.
