Caterpillars and Butterflies Reviews

  • Alycia

Nice little informative book for my 6 year old who is currently taking care of her own caterpillar!

  • Cheryl

Very nice introduction to caterpillars and butterflies. Combination of photos and illustrations add a lot of interest to the text.

I love these little books! Beautiful photographs and great information on any topic, this one being about caterpillars and butterflies. I had one kid who was a slow reader. It took him awhile to catch on (almost 4th or 5th grade), but he loved these books. He would take them off the shelf, read them, and hear me read them over and over to his younger siblings. (Never underestimate younger books to slow readers!) It also led me to the discovery that he loved reading nonfiction books, especially science books, more than fiction books most of the time. The vocabulary in most of these books are excellent, and I would highly recommend them to your 4-6 year old, but again, any age can read them and enjoy them.

I really liked a number of aspects about this Usborne Beginners series book Information for young readers. Both photos and illustrations are used. Text is broken up into small parts, with also utilizing highlighted text boxes for key information. These would be great to encourage 2nd grade readers in reading nonfiction. I found this caterpillar book enjoyable and I think they would too.

    Usborne Beginners - Stephanie Turnbull

    Caterpillars and Butterflies

This factual book was used in conjunction with the class topic. The book enables children to see how a factual book is laid out with contents pages, sub-headings, glossary and index. Each page identifies and gives information of a different aspect of a caterpillar and the process of changing into a butterfly. The information and facts are written in clear and simple terminology. The glossary enables the reader to understand technical language, as it is explained in a straightforward manner.

The author has incorporated a number of interesting facts about caterpillars before explaining the process of turning into a butterfly. The pictures used to illustrate the book are real life and brightly coloured, which makes the book attractive and appealing to all age readers. The author has incorporated diagrams and on each page there is a cartoon caterpillar which outlines a fact.

As part of the class topic we had our own caterpillars and used the book to explain what stage our own caterpillars were at – the children were able to use the book to see what the next stage was and monitor how long each process took.

Usborne do a series of factual books on a wide range of topics. I would defiantly see if they had one on the next class topic that I undertake. The information that the book provides can be used for all ages, as it provides information and facts that can prompt questioning and further research.

This text is a great example of a typical informational text. It has many of the features we will be using throughout the unit, but it also is an easy to read text that teaches students about caterpillars and butterflies. It is categorized as a level 1 through Scholastic, and has the lifecycle of these insects in detail from beginning to butterfly, (and moth), including activity habits of the two insects.
I also like this text because I have a lot of connections I would hope to bring in as well. Every spring and summer I begin my garden and specifically put plants in my garden that will attract various kinds of insects. One of the things I plant a lot of is parsley in the hopes that swallowtail caterpillars will find it and build cocoons in it. On the other hand, the large whites on the previous page are horrid for my broccoli and cauliflower plants so I had tried to plant less of it to keep down those types of caterpillars. They turn into large white moths and are a huge pest. I would try and bring in examples of both depending on what time of year we were focusing on this unit and it would give kids a personal connection that would potentially peak their interest in finding out more information (i.e. reading more information texts) about butterflies and caterpillars.

Once again, we are not disappointed by an Usborne book. Great early and simple introduction to caterpillars, butterflies, and moths. My children enjoy the great pictures and easy to understand facts.

  • Lisa

This book is a non-fiction book and goes through the life cycles of caterpillars and butterflies. This book would be a good book to read for a science lesson and then you could have the students make caterpillars and butterflies for a project and discuss the cycles with students.

  • Kelly

The photographs are helpful for children thinking carefully about caterpillar/butterfly bodies and lives.

A great companion to discussions about caterpillars, butterflies and the metamorphosis process that changes the caterpillar.
