Evil lurks in the forest

What terror stalks the villagers of Ossington? Who is the ghostly horseman haunting the road, stopping anyone from leaving? Why are the wild elves slaying villagers from afar with their deadly stone-tipped arrows? What lies buried in the old Great Barrow, and why is it stirring anew? What secret do the ancient standing stones surrounding the village hold, and can the heroes solve the mystery before a foul plot comes to fruition?

The Standing Stone is fourth in a series of stand-alone Dungeons & Dragons adventures for 7th-level D&D heroes. It presents a mystery for heroes to solve if they wish to save an isolated village from the dangers that threaten to overwhelm it.

To use this adventure, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual.

Well, my gaming group loved the Sunless Citadel and the Forge of Fury, so we are continuing with the set and moving on to the Standing Stone. Can't wait to see what they come up with!

Game has started with much fun had by all. I did change up a couple of things in the ending (for one, I am not making my guys go through a maze, I changed it up with some traps and a "decoder" door riddle. However, for the most part, this is a great campaign.

This is not what the outside cover makes it sounds like it is. I was seriously disappointed. I was planning on running this for my Saturday group, but that's out. I feel like you need to have a bland group of four, that don't do much in a normal session. Like, you need to keep doing things to get the party moving.

Don't get me wrong, I've read worse. Hell, I've RUN worse. But they've all had that DM wiggle room where you could easily weave it into any game with any group. This one feels like the only way to have fun with this one is if your DM is awful and they take a break and run a published adventure.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I lack imagination. I wouldn't discount the idea.

Fun adventure. Could be quite tricky for PCs. Lots of variability and customization options. Can fit smoothly into any campaign setting. For a group of 7th level adventurers.

It's fine - the concept is really interesting, the town is well done, and then the adventure sticks the players on rails seemingly to pad for time and the writer forgot all the details that were planned.

    My suggestions:
    1. Adjust the forest random encounter table to include chances for more clues. There's a "destroyed village" mentioned in the adventure that doesn't make an appearance - make one. Just some burned out village with skeletons is enough to get the idea across.
    2. There is a dungeon shoved into the adventure to waste time until the players make it to the bototm, where a ghost explains the plot. Ditch the dungeon, or make it an optional - unrelated - areas to explore. You don't need it if you just add some clues in the other locations.
    3. There's notes on playing up the animal nature of the townsfolk that are buried in a single line. Just casually note that the villagers sniff the adventurers (I added an aside, maybe because you've been on the road so long?), growl at each other, etc.
    4. The adventure is dependent on "they have defenses against magic/detection!" that are not necessary for 5e.
    5. Add a mechanic where the cambion's song controls/enrages the villagers. This makes the final battle more interesting - do they go after the BBEG, the cambion, or deal with the horde of (semi-innocent) villagers?
