The Erotic Adventures of Ambrose Horne Reviews

Intelligent erotica. I never thought I'd use that phrase, but this book qualifies. It is well researched for period specific appropriateness. A clever series of who-done-its laced with sex and lust. It is well written, very tight story construction and a pleasure to read.

This is another excellent offering from Xcite Books, who always have a variety of saucy erotic novels to tempt me.

The main character, the eponymous Ambrose Horne is a rival to that other famous Victorian detective, Sherlock Holmes. Indeed reference is made to Holmes on several occasions. Although their methods of detection are similar, there is one major difference between them. Horne is aptly named, as he has a tremendous sexual appetite and uses it to his advantage to extract the most from women, whether they are suspects, witnesses or buxom barmaids.

The book is a collection of short stories, written very much in the same style as the Sherlock Holmes anthologies but with raunchy hedonistic descriptions at frequent intervals. At one point, Ambrose Horne claims to have been the first to find, if not name, the elusive female G-spot! If only more men today knew how to find it!

I particularly liked the use of Victorian slang to describe various parts of anatomy and sexual acts as it gave the stories more authenticity and character.

Admirers of Holmes need not be put off by Horne, the author, Chrissie Bentley’s style is firmly tongue in cheek and the stories are all a light-hearted Victorian romp, well written and richly describing the erotic methods of the unconventional detective.

Anyone who has enjoyed the recently released Hollywood film version of Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr will also enjoy Ambrose Horne. Both are Sherlock Holmes, but not as we expect!

I can’t wait to read the companion books, The Erotic Memoirs of Ambrose Horne and The Erotic Return of Ambrose Horne, also from Xcite Books at the ridiculously low price of £2.99 each!

As adaptions of other novels go, this one was pretty amusing. Based on Sherlock Holmes (and he does come up as an absent character) and his types of adventures, this is an erotic twist on the whole thing. It was a series of 5 or 6 short stories in which Ambrose Horne has to solve some sort of erotic-based mystery.

Because of Sherlock appearing in absentee, I'm sure you've surmised that this book is set in the same era. That was about the most interesting part for me, mainly due to the fact that the characters would say awesome things like "Let us speak frankly." and then proceed to keep talking around the subject (at least in a modern sense!)

This book had me more reflect upon the writing style, and how the author was certain that she was actually getting the proper diction of such fascinating folks set in such an interesting time, rather than the supposed mystery occurring, or the erotic bent of the whole thing. I doubt that was the intention, but it really did give me some fun ideas on how to procure proper writing styles for peasants of the 1800's.

Anyway, an amusing book, but without the fun mind trip it would have been really dull.

The Erotic Adventures of Ambrose Horne, by the very talented Chrissie Bentley was a pleasure to read. The main character, comparable to Sherlock Holmes (oh wait, he is mentioned!), is absolutely amazing. This is a perfect example of the kind of Erotica I truly enjoy. It was very well rounded and entertaining in every way.
