This is a fabulous book if you're a skincare obsessive like me! Whenever I watch beauty gurus on YouTube, I always gravitate towards the skincare videos, because skincare is a real passion of mine. It really interests me, and I take a lot of pleasure from looking after my skin and finding new products and things to try out.
Liz Earle has written a brilliant book with no stone left unturned in the skincare world. I've never tried any Liz Earle products (although I have been dying to try her hot cloth cleanser), but what I was pleased about was that she doesn't really tout her own products all that much. Sure she mentions them a couple of times, but she also mentions many other brands. And the main area of this book is the natural are, with a focus on natural plant-based products and the way they can compliment a variety of skin types and skin issues.
With chapters on the skin itself, how to look after skin in different decades of life, skin problems such as acne and eczema, and even how to chill out to look after yourself more, this is a very readable and very helpful book. I'm sure I will be returning to it over the years to draw on a lifetime's worth of advice. -
Being several months in on DIY-ing much of my skin care I keep seeking out more information. This book is gorgeous to look at, with lots of full color calming images of a laid back and simple life. The content, however, is not deep and there were no skin care recipes inside. Like a few other titles in this genre, the author has her own skin care line. She does name drop it fairly frequently, but she also name drops many cosmetics and other skin care products throughout. This made it feel a little less commercial to me than other books, even though there was ultimately more product name dropping.
The material covered was spot on with what I've read elsewhere. Although the use of parabens is advocated as less danger than what may lurk in an unpreserved or naturally preserved beauty product. I'm still not certain how I feel about that as my skin has shown marked reduction in irritation since I cut parabens from my skin care routine. The book has great sections on skin care for each decade from the teen years and up, as well as special sections for skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea. Those sections are certainly worth reading and taking note of if they apply to you.
If you are looking for information on the ingredients you should look for in your skin care products you buy, you want to know what nutrition and supplements may help your skin as well as other life changes you can make this book may be what you are looking for.
If you are looking for information and recipes for formulating your own skin care products at home, you'll want to look elsewhere. Though those making their own products may find it useful to at least read as there is some good info on easily attainable ingredients you may wish to incorporate into your recipes. For everyone, there is some great info on giving yourself facial, foot and hand massages.
I would definitely recommend checking this one out from your library before deciding to purchase it if you can. I suspect there is a great dividing line between those who like it and those who don't. -
I picked this up cause it was on display at the library and her cleanse and polish saved my skin 3yrs ago when my skin chose to act weird after having my son.
But this book isn't saying anything different from other books out there about skin. She tries very hard not to make it one big advert for her product line, but ultimately fails. It reads as a thorough product instruction pamphlet with sections for different age groups and a couple of healthy meals and exercises thrown in for good measure.
Her skin looks good though. -
Liz Earle is one of the most well-known skincare brands in the UK (and beyond) and I've always admired Liz's holistic approach to skincare. Many people think that they can simply 'buy' good skin through using expensive products without any thought to their lifestyle or diet, and guess what? They're wrong!
This book is one of Liz's earliest publications so some of the info is a little dated in places, but the main principles remain the same; if you want good skin, you need a consistent skincare routine, eat a healthy and wholesome diet (Liz is a brilliant advocate for organic farming), drink plenty of water, don't smoke, and make sure that you do your exercise.
She shares some of her favourite healthy recipes, workout routines, and details how the skin changes throughout the decades of life and how you can adapt to support it so that it's always looking its best. There are also chapters dedicated to many of the big skin problems such as Acne and Eczema which make useful reading. I'm a big believer in self-care and the positive mental health benefits that come from taking the time to look after yourself, and this book is a good place to start. -
