Roger loves adventure. Today he’s playing pirate, sailing the high seas, dancing to the hornpipe, and catching fish. But the wind’s blown him off course and he’s . . . well . . . lost.
When Padraig, a kitten-sized, bug-eating dragon, encounters the lost turtle, he offers to help Roger find his way home. Roger’s directions take some time to follow—his house looks brown, sounds like singing, smells like baking, feels like sand, and tastes like strawberries—and along the way, Roger and Padraig become friends. And friendship always yields unexpected rewards. Like cookies.

I won this book on first-reads giveaway. I just got this today in the mail and my grandson and I read it right away. It's a wonderfully illustated colorful book. We both enjoyed it. My grandson is 8 yrs old and the words in this book are easy enough for him to read, or if children are younger a book that will keep the younger lads interested and excited to be read to. I could see this book becoming one of your child's favorite go to books.
It's about a turtle who can't find his way back home and this flying dragon helps him. They become wonderful friends along the way. The thing that sets this book apart from other children's books is the fact that at the end there are questions and discussion topics to discuss with your child. Kind of like you would do in a book group only geared toward children about friendship. Another thing that sets this book apart is when the dragon is invited in to his new turtle friend's house, his mom makes cookies. And, what do we find at the end of the book? A recipe for those cookies. A wonderful way for the author to have set this apart from everyone else's. When the weather turns cooler, my grandson and I have plans to make those cookies together. -
This is a cute children's book. I enjoyed the friendship theme and how the dragon, Padraig, stuck with the turtle, Roger, and continued to help him until he found his way back home. I can see children enjoying this book because of the adventure and sensory input like the crunchy bugs Padraig was eating. The facial expressions the dragon makes are just precious. The fact that the turtle is lost will touch heartstrings, and his friend's effort to help him is quite touching. Because the way the turtle describes his home keeps building in the details, the mystery needing to be solved also builds from a suspense-like drive to find answers. I can easily see a child turning the pages to find out what happens next.
The illustrations are beautiful and eye-catching and I can see this book becoming a child's favorite request, like a "read this to me over and over" type story. I would have enjoyed this story for the pictures alone when I was reading a lot of children's books in elementary school. Plus, there are great discussion questions at the end that will inspire talks between parents and their children, Sunday School teachers, and the story include a bible verse. There is a bonus recipe for chocolate chip cookies for moms at the end. -
Roger the turtle was playing pirates and now he can't find his way back home. His new friend, Padraig the dragon, agrees help him.
What a sweet book! I particularly love the illustrations. They are cute without being overly cutesy. The message of friendship is based on a verse from Proverbs: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." I thought the story was slightly predictable and repetitive, but in a good way. Very often children WANT and LOVE predictable and repetitive. And I agree with Roger's mom: "It always helps to have good mates along when you set sail."
There is a recipe for Chocolate Chip Snappers at the end, which looks delicious!
Note: I won this through the Goodreads giveaway program. -
Beautiful children's book! Great message about the importance of friendships and putting others first. Love the fact that a turtle is one of the main characters. Great illustrations. Great story. Your kids will like it! Shoot, you'll like it!

A goodreads first reads win. I can't wait to read this and neither can my little boys!
A fun story about friendship. My 5 year old laughed out loud several times and asked me at the end if we could keep the book. Great pictures too. -
What a delightful book - all the prerequisites for children. Cute characters, repetitive missions, and a quiet moral. The verse and pictures completed the package. Recommended.

An absolutely adorable children's book about helping others and persevering. I found it so cute and my six year old niece loved it!

The Dragon and the Turtle written by authors Donita K. Pail and Evangeline Denmark & illustrated by Vincent Nguyen is a sweet tale. In this story, we meet a dragon and turtle that develop a great friendship. The Dragon meets the turtle while in search for a snack for himself but when he sees that turtle is lost, he puts his own needs behind him and helps his new friend. An excellent concept in teaching kids on how we should help each other and be selfless.
Throughout the story the dragon and turtle go on a search to find turtles home going from place to place. It takes a bit of time till they reach the turtle’s home but all the while, children will learn more about what’s very special about turtles home that he loves so much. This is great as it can turn a child to tell you what they love and remember about their own home.
The book is in hard cover format and is very well illustrated and is sure to keep a child’s attention as the story is read. At the end of the book, there are discussion questions that are great for home or even a bigger group lesson as being used in children’s church or Sunday school. I love that a scripture verse is added in which the book is based off of. ” A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity,” Proverbs 17:17.
Included is also a recipe that we hope to try out soon for Chocolate Chip Snapper cookies that the characters in the book ended up snacking on once they reached their destination.
My 2 1/2 year old daughter really enjoyed this book and we’ve read it several times since we got it. I am looking forward to getting the next title to see what adventures dragon and turtle go on next. -

The Wordsmith Journal strives to guide readers to books of personal interest, with the understanding and respect that what appeals to some may not appeal to others. It reflects the reviewer’s own level of enjoyment, but the review is intended to be informative for the benefit of all readers. -
This was a cute little story. The theme is friendship and persistence. I particularly enjoyed the illustrations. I did not realize until the end that it was actually based on some Biblical passages, which the authors include for reference. Slightly older children will probably enjoy this more than a very young audience, as the story is a little longer and complex than a basic picture book. However, there is a lovely cookie recipe at the end that all ages can enjoy!

I won this book from the first reads program and tried several times to read it with my 3 year old but with no success. Its a very nice book, and I love the characters, but its a little too long for the younger children. Id recommend it for kids maybe around age 4 1/2 or 5.

Love it! Shared this with my students and they also loved the characters and story! Turtle got turned around and lost his house. He meets a special friend who helps him find his house. Turtle and dragon use sensory clues to locate home sweet home.
