Greg Heffley has always been in a hurry to grow up. But is getting older really all it’s cracked up to be?

Greg suddenly finds himself dealing with the pressures of boy-girl parties, increased responsibilities, and even the awkward changes that come with getting older—all without his best friend, Rowley, at his side. Can Greg make it through on his own? Or will he have to face the “ugly truth”?

The Ugly Truth (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #5), Jeff Kinney

The story begins with Greg explaining that since he and his best friend Rowley have had a big fight, their friendship has been "history.".

Susan Heffley, Greg's mother, announces that she will be going back to college for a few months in order to stimulate her mind.

As a result, the Heffley men must take care of themselves, and most stability falls apart. Food is often ruined, and since Susan usually does the chores around the house, Greg is left with little clean clothes to wear. ...

This was a very funny book, but perhaps not quite as funny as the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong! The Ugly Truth has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. But, while the first four books had me roaring with laughter, erupting in guffaws, and frequently demanding to read aloud portions of the inspired insanity to anyone within earshot while gasping and trying to catch my breath, this latest offering only had me chuckling ruefully, or perhaps breaking out in a broad grin from time to time. I think part of the reason why this book didn't tickle my funnybone as much is because Greg Heffley is growing up. He's always been conscious of being a middle-school boy and a bit of late-bloomer, but this volume has him much more worried about when he's going to catch up with a lot of the guys in his class. There's less random hilarity in this volume, and more of a connected storyline, as Greg ruminates on his still strained friendship with Rowley, his uncle's upcoming wedding, his health class and school slumber party. Greg's obsession with getting more popular, and winning over girls in particular, continues to be charming.

I was surprised however, by how much he really didn't get it, in terms of Rowley. Greg has been a selfish friend over the years, but he doesn't see that at all. He just wants things to go back to the way they were, when Rowley put up with all of his abuse. Greg's bored demeanor with everything having to do with his family, and his disappointment at being treated like a little kid at his uncle's wedding (he was hoping to be a full-fledged groomsman, rather than an assistant flower boy) was pretty silly, and the highlight of the book, for me, was the school sponsored sleepover. Convinced he's going to be able to mingle with cute girls all evening, Greg eagerly signs up, but is sorely disappointed when it's mostly guys and their over-earnest teachers take away all of the kids cell phones and electronic devices when they refuse to socialize with each other. Predictably, the helicopter parents arrive to pick up their kids early, fearing the worst when they don't answer their text messages.

The blend of humor, and stick figure-like cartoons which convey so much emotion which are the hallmarks of this series are still here and Wimpy Kid fans won't be disappointed in this latest addition.

You just can't get enough of it.

I have been introduced to these lately and I find it surprisingly addictive. This one brought in little surprises of Greg's mom leaving the house to the men and the resulting dilapidation of the daily routines, the short and thankful introduction of the domestic help and her witty circumventions around the works.

I guess the reason we all find this so intriguing and compelling is that there's that kid inside each one of us. The stupid beliefs that we all had about the workings of the universe. Things that we keep to ourselves. Those troll incidents that we want to laugh out loud to but do not want to be associated to our adult images.

This book brought many such incidents and packed them into one for me. You might think that you maybe a Tony Stark or something but you sure had some funny mishaps in the world of adults.

Or as we call it, 'there's this funny thing that happened to my friend in childhood'.

A whooping five star from a 22 year old. :)

This was a very funny book. I loved all the parts of the book but I especially loved the part where Greg overheard his parents in thinking that he was going to be the GROOMSMEN because they were getting him a tux. He thinks he gets to join in on the party that's held for the to-be married man. But turned out he was the assistant flower boy. I was laughing so hard because he had to hold the flowers for Manny. i recommend this book to all who loves humor books.

Greg is about to start another school year but he isn't friends with Rowley anymore. Greg's uncle Gary is getting married in the next couple months and also Greg's mum wants to start studying and as a result the men of the house will have to cook dinner a few times a week and also do their own chores. Greg's family also wants him to be more responsible now as he is getting older and he is also awaiting 'the Talk' from his Gammie as he is getting older.

When the men of the family couldn't do all the chores, Greg's mum gets domestic help, in other words a maid. But Greg doesn't like the maid as she doesn't do anything and eats all their junk food. When Greg tells his mum, she doesn't believe him. Greg continues his school and he finds out that Rowley got his first zit and he is becoming a man. Greg also wants to hurry up the growth process but his parents tell him that they were both late bloomers so Greg's hopes vanish.

Greg and Rowley get invited to a middle-school party but that same weekend Greg has to attend his uncle's wedding. He tries to get out of it but can't as he is in the wedding party. He misses out going to the party but later on finds out that the party wasn't all it cracked up to be for his classmates. His mum also finds the domestic help actually not doing anything when she gets home early one day.

This was also a funny addition to the series. As usual, I love the sketches and Greg's way to manhood and his continuous approach to shirk his responsibilities.

More of the same great formula of simple drawing and funny line continues to rock. I think I will use same review for all the Wimpy Kid books. All are more of the same and I can't get enough of them.

People who don't read generally ask me my reasons for reading. Simply put I just love reading and so to that end I have made it my motto to just Keep on Reading. I love to read everything except for Self Help books but even those once in a while. I read almost all the genre but YA, Fantasy, Biographies are the most. My favorite series is, of course, Harry Potter but then there are many more books that I just adore. I have bookcases filled with books which are waiting to be read so can't stay and spend more time in this review, so remember I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just
    Keep on Reading.

There's a part of me, the stick-in-the-mud math teacher/father part of me, that hates these books. Greg Heffley is a brat that is generally self-absorbed, mean-spirited, and clueless, but most of us were the same at that age, and so I cut him some slack with every book, because Kinney uses his obliviousness to such masterful perfection. I can't help laughing my @$$ off sometimes, that's why I prefer to hear these on Audible. Greg generally models what NOT to do; how NOT to be. The Ugly Truth, Book 5 of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, is no different than those that preceded it. Greg and his best friend Rowley are no longer friends and Greg continues to believe that Rowley will suddenly experience an epiphany that will force him to see the error of his ways, when the ugly truth is that Greg is a crappy friend. Hormonal changes are beginning to effect Greg and his classmates. Suddenly, girls are becoming such a motivational feature that a school sleepover attracts Greg who for the most part preferred to spend most of his down-time on videogames and television. Even his uncle's wedding takes on the appeal of a social opportunity to peacock around the opposite sex, and Greg actually believes that it is inevitable that the women will notice him. Be careful what you wish for!

I don’t know if it’s just my new “adult” perspective, or the fact that it’s been a little bit since I’ve read a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book… (Disclaimer: I’ve only read 3 total.) But this particular edition in the *Wimpy Kid* series felt weirdly cartoonish, even in comparison to the others before it. It’s sort of like what happened with the SpongeBob series, (yes, I'm a massive kid,) how the first couple seasons were really cartoonish and expressive, but still had moments that were not believable, but just laid back and chill. And how in later seasons it seems like the characters expressions progressively got WAY more animated (and honestly, excessive in my opinion.) This had a similar vibe, the situations seemed too exaggerated and people would act wildly out of the realm of human beings interacting with each other. I think that was the magic of the earlier books, as ridiculous and outlandish as the situations seemed, a part of the reader could still picture said predicaments happening to a self-absorbed middle schooler with no concept of what being an actual adult means.

Unfortunately, it also seemed like Greg’s unlikability was compounded by the lack of certain characters like Rowley or Susan.

Greg apparently had a tiff with Rowley in the previous book and is still yet to make up with him. All on his own in terms of a best friend, his mother Susan also starts taking classes and isn’t around the house a lot. Leaving the boys to fend for themselves. Susan is a very stereotypical mom, so the house ends up a mess and the boys eat nothing but junk in her absence. Frank apparently has no clue how to take care of his kids either, and as an adult man, (not to mention) their dad… I mean, I found that a little sad.

Greg is extra unlikable, as he blames Rowley for the entirety of said tiff, and waits for him to take the initiative in apologizing to him. He also misses his mom, not because he actually misses her, but because he misses the help she provides around the house.

It was scarce in this book that I found something that was actually funny to me. A lot of the gags didn’t land, and as stated earlier, were just too exaggerated. (Less is more sometimes, I promise.)
I chuckled a couple times, but not nearly as much as with the two other *Wimpy Kid books* I’ve read.
It’s actually kind of hard to find something I really enjoyed about this one… Even the message, that while relevant to kids: “don’t take being young for granted, you shouldn’t be in a rush to grow up…blah, blah, blah, etc. Etc. etc…” Was completely botched. Greg thinks he may be more of an Uncle Gary than a Frank Heffley for instance, but I wouldn’t say that being an ‘Uncle Gary’ is a good role model to live up to. I definitely wouldn’t want to be the guy, that wanted to get with his fiancée’s sister while dating her, when I grew up.

    Anyways, I’m torn. I didn’t despise it, but I didn’t really like it either…

So, maybe a 2.75 stars or 3.1 stars?
    I don’t know…

I don't approve how Greg treats his best-friend Rowley but after all what happened, at least they back as being friends in the end. I like how Greg's Gammie advised him not to hurry growing up and just enjoy his time as a teen now. Young readers of this series also must remember the lessons hidden behind the funny stories in this series because they are written especially for them.

it was a good book i hope they make another book. rowley and greg arent friends then they notice they were fighing about something that did notmake since. so then they become friends again

I think its the best of all the other ones.If you like funny books , you should read this.Greg Heffley and Rowley had a fight, and now they are not friends anymore. Now Greg and Rowley have to find new best friends.Greg thought that things would be changing with him and Rowley, but that didnt happen because Rowley had found a replacement friend.Actually his parents paid for the replacements. In the beginning Greg is alone with no friends to talk to.On page 12, he is sitting by himslf while a kid named Bryce Anderson is surrounded by alot of kids.Greg has been spying on Rowley and his new best friend.

I think Rowley needs Greg because Rowley cant do anything right without him, like he cant even tie his shoe,he has to wear velcro shoes.I also think that Greg should tell Rowley that he wants to be his friend again. On page 4 Greg it said that "if he wants to save this friendship he'd better do something fast. Why cant he do it?I predict that Greg and Rowley are going to be friends,at the end, some way or another.

You're right, Greg, you should be in no hurry to grow up. Just keep amassing information for that biography of yours. Also, Greg is the star, but Rowley steals the spotlight every time he's around!

Jajaja.

In this book Greg has lost his best friend Rowley because of an argument that they had. His best friend Rowley's parents have hired some people to be his friend. Meanwhile Greg Is always bored and has no other friends to do anything with. Everyone out there seems to be having more fun then Greg. He feels left out. Everything is pretty normal at school but Rowley and Greg are trying their best to try to avoid each other. His uncle Gary was having his third wedding which was a complete dag to go to and the entire family had to stay at Gammie's house which he wasn't looking forward to. Gammie's house isn't the most child friendly place and it was also his turn to get "the talk" from Gammie which he wasn't looking forward to. But then something miraculous happened. Jordan Jury one of the most popular kids in the school invited him and Rowley to a huge party. Greg wants to go but his uncle Gary's wedding is on that day so he couldn't go, but Rowley ended up going. Greg finds out that he was going to get a tuxedo, at the wedding only the groomsmen get wear tuxedos. Maybe this going to his uncle's wedding would be a better thing to do instead of going to the party.

From a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this an 8 which goes for every other diary of the wimpy kid book. There were some parts that I really liked but there were some parts that were completely irrelevant to the book. I liked the part about Rowley and him becoming friends.

This is the worst book of this series in my opinion. The book is like the awkward middle part of the series (Much like Greg). It feels empty without Rowley, and it didn't really feel like it had a main plot. I just wasn't immersed into this book like the other ones in the series, but being a regular reader of the series, I had to read it.
