SWORN TO REVENGE
Now she had sailed half round the world to Hawaii, to ruin the man who had ruined her ... who had taken her, despoiled her, and left her humiliated by her own awakened longings.
RAVISHED BY PASSION
Corinne hated Jared Burkett as deeply as she wanted his manly, sensuous passion. And Jared ached to possess Corinne, though she would force him to hurt her again. Their love, so violent, so reckless, would either destroy them, or give them completely to the wild abandon of tropical nights in paradise.
Paradise Wild Reviews
-
I really believe that Jared Burkett is the Antichrist. No, really. He is a lousy human being. I never warmed up to him. the reason why I somewhat like this book is the way Corinne sticks it too him with her revenge plot. Although she ruins her own reputation in the process. But it's not like she cares. She has no plans to stay in Hawaii, the land of the Jerky Husband, anyway.
I probably wouldn't like this book at all if it weren't for the scene where Corinne wants to reject her baby, but hears it crying and falls in love with her son. Okay I know that sounds cheesy, but I've read this book more than once, and this scene gets me everytime.
Jared is a hero that I wouldn't throw water on if he was on fire. He is just a nasty piece of work. He's near the top of my hated heroes of all time list. I still don't know why Corrine stayed with this man and fell back in love with him. I know a lot of readers hated Corrine. I didn't. She had some growing up to do, and started out this book a spoiled girl. But she matured very much over the course of the book, and even at her worse, she did not deserve Jared Burkett. She turns out to be a very good, loving mother, despite going through a period where she hated the fact that she was pregnant by the man who betrayed her. Is she my favorite JL heroine? No. But I thought she was an decent heroine and I did like her. I think she did grow as a person, so I respected her for that.
So I keep this book moreso to see how Corrine makes Jared look like the putz he is and for the poignant baby scene. Also because it's one of my favorite author's vintage books. I am a book collector, after all. -
What woman on the face of this planet would marry the man who raped her? And what father would sit there calmly while the man who just raped his virginal daughter laid out his plans to marry her? What. the. hell??? I don't care that this book was set in the 19th century, rape is rape and that man should have been tossed in the clink.
Equally disgusting was Lindsey's placing the blame for Corinne's rape on Corinne. A virgin wouldn't be seen in a gambling establishment. A virgin wouldn't flirt. Everybody blames Corinne for the fact that Jared is a major asshat and decides to rape some poor girl because his mom committed suicide. Are you freaking kidding me?! Even her own father blames her for getting raped and then says, "Sure, son, you go ahead and marry her. I think you'd make a fine husband for my daughter."
And while we're on the topic of discussing what planet the heroine is from, what planet is Johanna Lindsey from? She repeatedly uses rape as a plot device to get a woman to fall in love with her hero. How is that a turn on? Or a prelude to love? Or the basis for any sort of healthy relationship? And why does she romanticize rape? Rape is not romantic. On any level. Ever.
Johanna Lindsey's treatment of rape is disgusting and she should have her woman card taken away. -
I didn’t like this book that much.
I can’t even begin to understand what can possess a woman to forgive and forget a man for raping her and deflowering her… and then calling her a whore over and over again… and on top of that, hitting her!!
No, no, no, it was too much, the author made the plot too complicated and some of the things made me feel very uncomfortable.
Corinne is not a strong female lead character, she’s just too stupid and her actions didn’t make sense most of the time.
Jared is a bipolar rapist who hits women and just does what he wants. I like an alpha male character, oh I do, but he’s not it whatsoever.
How in God’s name can the author expect me to like or even bear his characters when they’re like that is beyond me! -
This was a good read and i really enjoyed it.
However, I find it difficult to comprehend how a father can allow someone that raped his daughter to marry the same daughter, perhaps it was due to the circumstances ... Lindsey deserved a four 🌟 for making the book an interesting and a readable one. -
Duh duh duh.....😡😡😡😡😡
Novel HR ini tipikal full drama ala opera sabun tahun 80an. Udh gitu gak mutu pula penyelesaian konfliknya.
Ini plot cerita mau ttg apa yg difokuskan sepertinya jadi gak penting. Ibarat mau masak sayur asem, gak peduli kemanisan, keasinan ataupun pahit, semua racikan bumbu dicemplungkan ke dlm panci. Nah bayangkan aja sayur asem rasa kluwek asinan rasa gula batu. Keblenger semua.
Jadi gini, Jared Burkett (namanya aja mengingatkan iklan Rexona jadul, Burket = "Bubur Keringat") pingin balas dendam ke bapaknya Corinne, Samuel Barrows, yg dianggap Jared sbg penyebab mamanya budir krn cinta gak sampai (Siti Nurbaya banget sih!).
Corinne ribut dgn adik iparnya yg manja, KDRT Jared kpd Corinne (I couldn't believe Corinne so easily to forgive what Jared done to her), dan simpanan alias kekasih sang suami juga kumpul bareng di satu rumah. Duuuuhhh 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Saya pernah baca novel author yg sama-sama heroine manja dan keras kepala, spt "You Belong to Me"
dan "A Pirate's Love"
One of Johanna Lindsey's earlier works. I enjoyed it even though the Hero and Heroine aanoyed me at times.
There are a load of misunderstandings which all work out to a satisfying finish.
The emotion is high and very dramatic.
The reader can see Johanna Lindseys complete admiration and love for Oahu/Hawaii-- Which is were she lives currently,I think. She describes a little paradise with lots of agust and drama. Its a place a bright and vivid colours with friendly people who treasure their heritage, yet they are on the brink of revolution. Johanna Lindsey fills in the readers on the history of the politics of Hawaii-and if your like me who enjoys historical facts intertwined with the story, you'll like this.
As much as I hate to admit it but...I really enjoyed this book-It kept my attention and kept me wondering if everything would be resolved in the end.
The heroine,Corinne, was a bit of a pain-she thought highly of her self and didn't take into account the feelings of others. She wants a man who will let her have her freedom-so she can gamble without a husband forbidding her to. Jared(the hero) changes all this, he is aggressive and dominant-everything she dosen't want and he gives off dangourous vibes.
Truth be told, Jared, scared the crap outta me...I felt the danger liping off of him and i was like ''RUNNNN! RUNNN!'' He had moments when he was nice and easygoing but like Corinne is very hotempered.
WARNING-Subjects that readers may be apposed to:
There is a 'Forced Seduction' scene, which is the first love scene between the heroine and hero.
The hero slaps the heroine in one scene out of anger. (I was pissed about both of these 'themes'--they were in the nicest terms possible, unreasonable. I get he was mad at her both times but its no excuse.)
Besides from all the Goods and bads: This gets a solid 3 and a half.
Johanna, knows her stuff and how to keep readers reading. I counldnt stop reading it and i finished it in a couple of hours.
Good read if the reader is okay with the two themes which are listed above. -
Copyright 1981, I have the boring pink cover with the flower. A horrible old school romance with the obligatory "male lead raping the female lead". In this case because "she asked for it". I counted 2,057 4 & 5 star reviews of this vile story. WTH????
There's no hero & heroine in this one. There's the male lead & the female lead. Corrine, the female lead, is a vain, spoiled, selfish "princess" with a gambling addiction. All she wants is her trust fund so she can gamble it away. Her father, who has done nothing else in her life to control her, won't let her have it. So, she plans to marry for convenience so she can do whatever she wants. This is 1891, so she's trying to find a spineless man. Her character actually gets better later in the book.
Then there's Jared. The most loathsome male in the history of romance novels. We get his back story about how his mother committed suicide in front of him, so we're supposed to feel sorry for him. Huh. He takes his foster sister & makes her his mistress. Before the infamous rape scene he ruminates about the past flirty girls he's "taught a lesson to". More rape? He hits the female lead. He's constantly emotionally abusive to the female lead.
This story goes from one emotional bit of angsty drama to the next. Jared tells Corrine's father that he raped her & all the father can say is you ARE going to marry her right? Whaaaa?
This is a reread for me, back in the 80's, though probably not more than twice. I remembered NOTHING about this book. The thing is, even when I was young & immature I realized that abuse isn't romance. This book should be under literary fiction. I don't usually judge other readers, but if you think rape is sexy & romantic, you have a big problem! -
I usually enjoy Johanna Lindsey's novels but I have to say this novel is by far the second worst book I've ever read. (water for chocolate being my least favorite book ever) I'm going to be honest and let you guys know I was not able to finish this novel...something I have never done with a book...I got to the rape scene and all but chucked the book to the floor. I don't intend to ever pick this up and after reading most of the other reviews on here I think I'm making a wise decision of abandoning this now. I completely hated the heroine and don't get me started on the "hero"...I think I'll go read one of Johanna Lindsey's better novels just to make myself forget about this one. She's a brilliant writer. I encourage everyone to check out her other novels.
-
Did not think I would actually finish this one. Well if there's ever a contest for the most IDIOTIC historical romance, this one would come in first place! It's really very much of an unrealistic story with idiotic hero & heroine. This would be my 2nd novel by Johanna Lindsey after A PIRATE'S LOVE, to which I gave 3 stars. Anyways, I cannot imagine how young girls back in the 80s found novels like these worth reading.
Which are Johanna Lindsey's better books?? -
My very first romance novel ever! I think I was maybe 11 or 12 when I picked this up covertly on a vacation in Wildwood (with my babysitting money). I really liked this book at the time, but later read it and found it quite unrealistic. In any case, it holds a special place in my heart because it was my first!
-
I read this book when I was much, much younger (I think like 15 years old??) and stupid enough to think anything about this story was romantic. But no. Nopity nope. Jared Burkett is an evil pig. He raped Corinne, called her a whore, and hit her. What the hell?! This is just gross.
I am ashamed of myself for ever enjoying this book. -
Çevirisi felaket okuduğuma okuyacağıma bin pişman oldum bir de erkek karakter Jared'e uyuz oldum zaten yaptıklarından dolayı gerçi kızımız Corinne'de iyi pabuç değildi sevilecek yanıda pek yoktu ama Jared 1.liği aldı kesinlikle..
-
I absolutely loved the plot!!! BRILLIANT. MAGNIFICENT. PERFECTO.
However, I was also mourning over the fact that there was practically NO groveling!
What a total shame. Hero DID NOT REDEEM himself. Far from it.
And I am raging hard due to that. How could you, Ms. Lindsey!!! It's so cruel to make the Hero get away with any scant regard of what he committed was wrong, and for the heroine to just accept it as is. Sigh. Such a disappointment. If only. If only. If only. That would have made this a 5.
Writing was beautiful, no doubt. Everything just flew like melody. I had no doubts of Ms. Lindsey's capabilities ... it's the line of the story that was so difficult for me to accept. He should be made to grovel. And grovel. And grovel. What a doormat. I would have raged and demanded apologies and leave him. No man should ever lay any hand on any woman, despite him saying he's never done that in his life. But I digress, this was a historical romance ... so I assumed it's a common thing back then.
Then there's the part of the Hero's younger sister who sought to hurt the heroine. Hero did not do anything about that and pushed it under the rug as well. Arrrrghhhhh. I'm already so frustrated. Now, having to relay the story again in this review, it brought all the unpleasant things pertaining to the story.
Having said that though, please don't let my rantings deter you from reading this and gauging for yourself what you think of this book. It's good. Trust me. It's just that, he should be made to grovel more. -
I love bodice rippers and I love Johanna Lindsey but I did NOT love this book. And I really wanted to. So why wasn’t I able to love it… to summarize it: The MFC and MMC were just not compatible!
Corrine was not likeable - there were times that I liked her (mostly towards the end) but she had become such an unlikeable heroine for most of the read that nothing she did towards the end helped her case….
But then there was Jared - I just can’t with this guy… he was everything I love in a bodice ripper hero… obsessive possessive manipulative aggressive and damaged by his past but I simply could not connect. Again I think this couple was not meant to be together… had they been paired with different people it may have worked for me.
But then again mostly everyone in this novel was simply not up to my standards… and this includes Corinne’s maid, Jared’s sister, his neighbor, his uncle, Corrine’s father and friends…
I truly pushed myself to finish this…. And yet I still feel like it was a solid 3.5 -
Paradise Wild, novel yang tak mampu saya meletakkan walau sesaat sejak mula membaca selagi tak jumpa perkataan 'tamat'😆
Sebuah kisah cinta yang sangat berbeza dgn kbyakkan novel romantik yang lain..
Jared sanggup meninggalkan Hawai tanah kelahirannya ke Boston semata-mata kerana ingin membalas dendam pd ayah Corrine kerana dia menyalahkan ayah Corrine atas kematian bunuh diri ibunya..
/kenapa saya rasa ia berbeza sbb pertama kali saya jumpa watak utama(Jared dan Corine )saling membalas dendam dlm novel cinta.😆
Dan lebih tepat dua-dua adalah Red flag 🔺
.🤣🤣
Saya suka apabila JL masukkan latarbelakang dan sejarah Hawaii..❤
⚠️novel ni ada beberapa scene keganasan.
Selebihnya saya suka drama dlm Paradise Wild -
This story of Corinne, a Boston socialite, and Jared, a wealthy Hawaiian Islander, was a volatile one. He was bent on revenging the death of his mother by ruining Corinne's father who was indirectly responsible for her death. Little did he know how fiery and vengeful Corinne could be. The story traveled from Boston to Hawaii. That locale was as much a character in the story as anyone. Made me want to go back.
I did tire from all the fighting and misunderstanding. But they finally worked it all out and the HEA was indeed a beautiful one. -
4 stars. Read this for Regan Walker’s Historical Romance Review blog, August is exotic locale month. I’m a fan of Johanna Lindsey‘s books. This is one of her earlier works and it shows. Story takes place in Boston and Oahu, which was a unique setting. It’s full of angsty drama and bodice ripper type moments you either like it or you don’t. I enjoyed it in spite of the H/ h’s at times poor behavior, but that’s part of the angsty fun that made it a page turner for me.

Bintang 3
Since I'm already in a book slump I decided to embrace it and read an author I already knew would be disappointing. I wasn't disappointed. But since I wasn't disappointed in being disappointed, does that cancel out my disappointment?
Corinne Barrows is a Boston socialite with a gambling problem. Jared Burkett is a businessman from Hawaii with a thirst for vengeance. Both are at the peak of physical perfection. Personality-wise they are self-centered, manipulative, hot-headed, judgmental, unsympathetic, twisted and vile creatures of the night. In any other romance novel Corinne and Jared would be the villains of the piece. They deserve each other. Unfortunately there's an innocent baby I'm worried about who is at the mercy of these two warthogs from hell.
So, since we start off the book with our protagonists as bottom feeders, there's nowhere to go but up, right? The rest of the novel will be a character arc as they find redemption and become if not decent at least acceptable human beings.
Then I remember I'm reading a Johanna Lindsey book. -
Karakter yg aneh utk dijadikan tokoh utama.

The only reason this book is two stars instead of one is because so many things were happening up and down that it held my interest. But Ms. Lindsey's style is terrible. Abrupt, simplistic, and definitely not for me. Once I started reading quickly though, it was much less bothersome and much more enjoyable to read the book. It was okay. Not much else to say. -
Never ending misunderstanding until the very last moment. So sick of the constant bickering and fighting of the main characters. Both the hero and heroine are jerks. His mistress and sister are no different. This book only gave me depression. So disappointed.

Never seen two people make a bigger mess of it!
