An outcast among his own kind, Rat has always withdrawn from others and lived life by his own rules. Rejected and shunned so many times, he’s resigned to the fact that he’ll always be alone and almost convinces himself that he’s happier that way. That all changes in one instant when he receives a call from a lost shifter named Keegan. Scared and on the run from Ravens, Keegan is in hiding and Rat knows if doesn’t go rescue the man, he’ll be dead within hours.

What Rat doesn’t expect though is to fall instantly in lust with the lost shifter as soon as they finally meet. That’s the last thing either one of them needs or wants though. Not only is Keegan still adjusting to the fact he’s a shifter, but there’s also the fact he’s the feline leader’s younger brother. Which means the man is off limits. But as they face more danger and get closer, Rat knows he’s powerless to fight his growing attraction to Keegan. Will Rat finally be able to go of his past to embrace a future with his new lover, or will he forever be destined to live life alone?

Savage Awakenings (Lost Shifters #3) Reviews

  • Sophia Triad

Jaguar shifter, Keegan & Cheetah shifter, Rat (or Carson)

Rat is the tech guy of the feline headquarters with awesome computer skills. He likes dressing like a Goth, swearing as a sailor and being over the top sarcastic. His main problem is that he cannot hold his shift as a cheetah.
Keegan is the feline leader’s younger brother and another of the lost shifters. He has an amazing photographic memory and this made him a child wonder. Unfortunately he didn’t have a normal childhood between humans, since his parents loved to show him off because of his gift.

Even the most misunderstood characters can hide a vulnerable side and they can redeem themselves and find love.

  • Kelly H. (Maybedog)

I love this series because I am a sucker for brothers. This time I even understood why people were upset with the romance of the two. There was a lot of danger and action and angst, got to love that stuff.

    But there were issues.
I hate the sexism. Just because this is M/M doesn't mean there can't be equal woman. For example, the assumption is that Cassie is going to cook. Even though she fights alongside the guys, and is kick ass, and a terrible cook, in order to get away from her cooking, they order out. The assumption is that she is the cook. She is the only woman there and this is just disgusting.

In addition, one person describes a massacre as being so horrific that everyone was targeting, "even women and children." Okay, children I can see, but women? Are we in the freaking fifties/dark ages? The men were all innocent as well. Why are their lives less important? That kind of mentality just makes women look weak and unable to protect themselves and men disposable. That is just revolting.

"Bad" was used instead of "badly" by a highly educated man from a high society family. That is just ridiculous. He would know better.

Four times the narration says someone is not "for sure." Really? They weren't sure they themselves existed? I had a really not bright and really uneducated kid once who used to say that and it was all I could do to not laugh. But I didn't (and I was really nice to her and cared about her--I can still find things funny, can't I?)

A character shifted with his clothing on, even though I'm pretty sure others have lost their clothes in the process. I vaguely remembering them saying in a previous book that some cats could do that but not all. That is just absurd.

I'm disheartened that That is just sad.

One good thing, though, is that this time it is the bad guys who wear the dusters. I am so sick of those things being worn by "cool" heroes. The only people I ever see wearing them (although I don't go near ranches so they might be exceptions) are total fantasy obsessed nerds with no fashion sense, the epitome of not cool. Great people, not "cool" though. Dusters are just silly unless you're a cowboy out on the range (which is what they were made for):

That works for me. But for shifters in Flint, Michigan? Just, no.

    Trench coats, cool:

    Dusters, not cool:

Again for those who need repetition:

    Trench coats, cool:

    Dusters, not cool:

And once more for good measure:

    Trench coats, cool:

    Dusters, still not cool:

So the whole book was good but it was just a disappointment and that is just not cool.

I still enjoyed it, though, and in the end, that is just all that really matters. Justly.

    Happy ending?

  • Erotic Horizon

The good thing about letting a series pile up or finding a series after release is that you don't have to wait until the next one is released, if you time it right. I was soon nose deep into SAVAGE AWAKENINGS – and if there was one book I was wanting to read, it would be this one - because it was Rat’s story.

Rat is a saint and a sinner all rolled into one, depending on who you ask. For me, he was the best thing in this series, Rat is the techy of the outfit and dresses like a Goth and has a mouth on him that argues with just about everyone and is as filthy as a sailor on shore leave.

Obviously Rat has a history and it’s not pretty, he naturally covers it up with the dark clothing and the over the top attitude. Another thing about Rat is that he is a slut, yup if it moves he will bed it and not too discreet about it as well, if all the snickering is anything to by.

When Rat literally has to go and get one of the found shifter, he does not hesitate – he finds his man, does what he needs to do to stay alive and in between falls tip over canister for the guy. Said guy just happen to be Keegan, younger brother to the leader of the jaguar shifter and is as brainy as they come.

Let’s me just say – so many things comes into play in this book, trust, showing one’s true colours and standing up for what you not only believe in but want. Rat’s history is also explored and it is heartbreaking – but he got his man so I was happy for him all round.

The salacious drama continuous in this book and I expects it will be a constant part of future books and to be totally honest I love it – I love the dirt of who did who and when who did who..

Some discord is afoot in this book however, because someone seems to be playing both sides of the fence and that cannot spell anything good for the team. They need to find that person now, or not only is the lost shifter children life at stake but their very own survival might be under threat.

One character that stole my attention since the first book of this series was Rat. I really like his wise-ass remarks and I know that there are more to it than meet's the eye. Especially when he opens up to Jacyn about the reason behind the name "Rat". So I'm really happy to know that book #3 is about him -- especially when I read the summary about who is supposed to be his mate: Keegan, one of Mitchell's younger brother. This will be fun :)

And FUN it is. I love it that Keegan; though younger than Rat -- oops, strike that, Carson, since Keegan will probably bitch-slap anyone who calls him Rat *g* -- but the cub knows how to work his way and put Carson on his fingers. It's fun to see Carson falling in love that way, especially knowing that he has been around the block.

Can't wait to read book #4

I'm continuing with the third book. Here you can definitely feel that when it comes to love, the author is a fan of love at first sight. The good thing in this case is that the plot of the series revolves around the love story, which to some extent saves the situation.

The other thing I liked was the story of Rat - Carson and Keegan. Unlike the previous two books, we don't have super trained soldiers who can handle every situation with ease. Here, Carson is the hacker, the computer geek that everyone turns to when they need help, and Keegan is another "Lost shifter" who needs to be rescued.

Carson is so to speak the "black sheep" who has received emotional damage from his parents and has trouble holding his shift.

Keegan differs from his older brothers. He is not only smaller, but also has a photogenic memory and an IQ probably higher than all the politicians of Bulgaria put together.

The book was definitely fun, but things like the Carson shifting issue and the editing could have been fleshed out more. I also noticed that there were some missing words and spelling mistakes.

  • Serena Yates

This third volume of the "Lost Shifters" series really tore at my heartstrings.

"Rat" has been despised by most shifters because he can't hold his shift. He was abused by his parents, and even his name reflects the disdain his fellow shifters carry for him. I loved how his mate, Keegan, broke through his protective walls and even starts calling him by his real name, Carson. Of course, they have issues to deal with as well, but the overall message of hope for even the most misunderstood character so far was wonderful.

  • JenMcJ

The third book in the series is starting to follow a predictable pattern. Change the names and the descriptions and this book is basically the same as the past two. Witty and likeable characters though.

The editing is terrible. Many missing, duplicated and misspelled words. At one point the Alpha leader, Mitchell is mispelled as Michelle!

  • Christy

'Savage Awakenings' is the third book in Stephani Hecht's 'Lost Shifters' series and, frankly, I couldn't wait to get to this one. Rat had intrigued me from the moment I saw him and it kind of caused a little twinge inside me that he's a shifter who can't hold his shift. Thus, it stood to reason that in his world he would be viewed as defective and less than the other shifters. The fact that Rat taught himself some mad computer skills didn't seem to matter to some shifters, although I was glad to see that the leader and his family didn't care about his shifter status. So, basically, beginning this story I was already a fan of Rat's and really wanted him to get his happy ever after.

Keegan is having a very bizarre day. Much like his brother, Jacyn, Keegan has no clue about any of the shifter world or his family history. He's lucky that when the Ravens find him, a tiger shifter named Seth does too and they escape. Unfortunately, Seth goes out for food and supplies and doesn't come back, leaving Keegan to call the number Seth gave him. Rat answers and tells him to stay put, he'll come to get him. Rat can't run the risk of the traitor telling the Ravens about Keegan, and since the leader and family are out on jobs, it's up to Rat to retrieve him and bring him home.

Now this is an interesting pairing. Rat has a lot of baggage from childhood and hides behind sarcasm so no one knows how much he hurts. Mitchell is the only shifter, really, whom Rat respects and he'll do just about anything for him. Keegan may have an eidetic memory and genius IQ, but there's still a whole lot of innocence in him. His adoptive parents were good to him, but basically they trotted him out for any type of competition that involved his brains, so Keegan never got the opportunity to just be a kid. He graduated high school at fourteen, and now at twenty-three he's already a lawyer. Rat and Keegan are seriously volatile together and they're also very sweet to watch.

I liked watching these two get their happy ending. They both had such hurt in their pasts and overcoming their fear of rejection enough to be able to say "I love you", was really difficult for them. It all turned out okay, and now Mitchell's family is only missing two of their younger brothers. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Once again, this book falls into the same formula as the first two.
    1. Shifter is on a mission to find/rescue/retrieve another shifter
    2. Shifters fall into lust/love at first sight
    3. Shifters elude bad guys to return home
    4. Shifters somehow feel they are undeserving of the other's love.

Okay sure - a little formulaic, but I keep liking each story better than the last. In this book we learn more about Rat. Rat has been in the last two books and is antagonistic and confrontational at best. He trusts very few people and considers few to be true friends. Rat was given his name because he has trouble holding his shift, considered to be an extreme embarrassment in a lot of shifter circles. He owes Mitchell, the coalition leader, his true allegiance and loyalty when Mitchell not only accepts him, but finds a place for him where his computer skills are respected and necessary. What better way to thank Mitchell than to bring back one of Mitchell's missing brothers?

Keegan is one of the most interesting characters so far. His eidetic (photographic) memory allows him to remember every detail he has ever seen at a glance and puts his IQ into the stratosphere. Unfortunately, the fact that he was so unique made his adoptive parents parade him around like a pony, rather than let him lead a normal childhood. Rat is the first person that Keegan meets who likes him for himself.

I really liked Rat and Keegan as a couple. Neither of them are alphas or super soldiers like characters in the previous books or shifters throughout the compound. I think because of this, their insecurities seem a little more believable. In book one, Logan didn't think he was good enough for Jacyn because he was a black jaguar? The book never really explained that enough for me to care. So when Logan took off and left Jacyn because he didn't think their relationship was going to work out, none of that was plausible. It just made me think Logan was a big idiot. But the history behind why Rat is called Rat and the insecurities there were a lot better explained, which helped me relate to Rat and his relationship with Keegan. And even though Rat didn't think he was good enough for Keegan, he gave it all a big - what-the-fuck-ever and went for it. That's a big 5 star attitude right there, which made me give this book an overall 4 star rating.

Another fun book in this series.

I didn't like this book as much as the previous two in the series. It just seemed to similar in my opinion. Two shifters fall in love while traveling across the country together. Blah. Blah. Blah. Same. Same. Same. Once I made it to about 40%, it did get more interesting and didn't take me much longer to finish it. I still like this series and plan to continue reading it.

    2.5 Stars

Rat (aka Carson) is an outcast. Unable to hold his shift as a cheetah, he has been disowned by his family and shunned by other shifters. When no one would even give him the time of day, Mitchell - the leader of the feline shifters - took Rat in. Rat is a computer geek and a hack of the first degree. Unflinchingly loyal to Mitchell and his kin, Rat immediately goes into rescue mode when he receives a distress call from Mitchell's brother, a lost shifter named Keegan. On the road and fleeing a murderous band of Ravens, Rat and Keegan are unable to deny their mutual attraction for each other.
Savage Awakenings is Rat and Keegan's story of love and acceptance.

This was the third installment in the Lost Shifter series. I was intrigued by Rat since the first book and was anxious to read his story. Although I liked both Rat and Keegan, this book fell short of the mark for me. I was irritated that a big deal was made of Rat's inability to hold his shift, yet nothing was mentioned about it until a few sentences at the end. Very anti-climatic. Secondly, this story seemed like a carbon copy of the last two books. Change the names and places and bam! New story. The final let down: editing, or the lack thereof. I usually can overlook misspellings and grammatical mistakes but the sheer volume of errors in this book was frankly aggravating and distracted from the story.

Bottom line: likeable MCs but an overused plot and an abundance of editing errors made for a disappointing read.

Stephani Hecht is a terrible writer. I don't feel like pulling any punches here, because to do otherwise would be a disservice to my fellow readers. These books are awful, but have their own compelling pull. I wanted to carry on to see what happened next, even though the writing was making me insane, the characters were all the same, and the sex was becoming incredibly redundant. It wasn't until I got to the third book based on Shane (seriously, again?), that I finally hit a wall and couldn't read any more. It was (sorta) fun while it lasted.

  • Tamara

I little harder to keep the suspension of disbelief in this one, so not as much fun. Also, same pattern as last two books. While it was fun, in this book it just got boring.
I still want to see how the main plot plays out though, so I'll keep reading...

  • ☔️ Stormy Day Reader

This review is for all of the Lost Shifters, Wayne County Wolves, and Assassin's Loyalty books since they are all interconnected and I read them back-to-back pretty much nonstop over a 10 day period. If I have anything to say about a particular book I'll add it under this bulk review.  First, I'd like to mention these are more like novellas than books but they have the same underlying theme and pretty much continue where the last left off but with a different couple.

Everything starts out with the Lost Shifters. To summarize there was a war between the feline shifters and the raven shifters. 20 years or so before the first book there was an all out slaughter in which hundreds of feline homes were attacked and burned down all of the occupants believed to be killed. Turns out that the babies and toddlers that were assumed lost were not. They were hidden within the human foster care system for the most part. I won't say how because that'd be a big spoiler. In addition to foster care some kids were sold into slavery and that's where the whole assassin thing comes in. A couple of the main characters marry into the wolf pack so that's where those books come in as well.

Pros: Since the books are so short there are no long drawn out boring details or general angst. There's usually only one sex scene although it's normally long as hell. Which makes the fact some people shelved these as erotica confusing. I liked the world building and even though there were times I think a little more info might have been nice it never detracted from the story or left me confused. Most of the relationships were a sort of love at first sight thing. Or maybe lust or obsession?  Despite this the shifters all seem adamant that's not a thing that happens. There wasn't one character I didn't like. My favorite character was Shane and he must have been the author's as well since he got a few extra books and a side series Shane's Chronicles. There's no big end battle or anything but the last book Baily's 9th Life does pretty much tie things up nicely. I think if I'd been reading the series when they were released I'd be a bit miffed because that book didn't come out until a few years later if you weren't reading the assassins books. Also, these books all have some really funny moments and/or dialog.

Cons: The last several books didn't appear to have been edited at all. If if wasn't for the fact that I was so invested in the overall story arc I would have quit reading them. Things like sent instead of scent and too instead of to they instead of them and random wrong words completely. There were also a couple of times that things were said/thought almost verbatim in different parts of a book as if the author forgot she'd already put that info in there already. At the start of the series, they state that all feline shifters are bisexual but at some point the author must have forgotten that detail because suddenly there are gay shifters and homophobia and all this hate. Which brings me to my next con, the themes of the different books started to repeat. Suddenly all these shifters had been thrown out of their previous pack or coalition or human home for being gay. And throughout this huge series of books there was only one straight couple. Like not even a straight friend or whatever. Even the females were all lesbians. It was just kinda unrealistic especially with the whole gay hate thing going on. Usually there's at least a few couples or friends or something on the periphery in gay romances especially in a world this huge. Which brings me to my final con, I had a hard time remembering who was who and what there story was after awhile especially if they weren't mentioned much in previous books. I wish there had been some sort of glossary to review.

Despite the cons, I would still recommend these books. All-in-all I really enjoyed them and was dreading the end although the editing in the last few books really had me also looking forward to the end if I'm being honest.

Savage Awakenings is one of my favs since Rat aka Carson is one of my favorite characters in the series.

    Passione e scoperte

Lacks a cohesive conclusion and contains countless errors

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

    Rating: 5/10

    PROS:
    - In a lot of romances, the characters have unrealistically adoring views of every little idiosyncracy their partner has. It’s nice to read stories like this one that show the guys getting annoyed with each other and not suffering from the “he’s perfect”s.
    - Hecht develops Keegan’s eidetic memory well, including tiny details with each description of a new place that only someone very detail-oriented would notice.
    - The story has a few moments that made me laugh out loud, some of which stem from Rat’s attitude and others of which occur when he’s observing other characters on video monitors that are connected to security cameras.

    CONS:
    - The structure of this story is VERY similar to that of its predecessor in the series (Primal Passions). One guy’s an outsider and the other is a shifter who doesn’t know he’s a shifter. Immediate attraction on both sides. A forbidden relationship because of the shifter’s scary older brother. Almost-immediate teasing and sex shortly thereafter. A Big Misunderstanding. Etc.
    - The conclusion is disappointing, to say the least. For one thing, as soon as Carson discovers the identity of the villain, he starts planning his revenge on the man; but then when they’re face-to-face, the stand-off is described in a single paragraph: “The predator in Rat wanted to toy with [Bad Guy] and make him pay for his sins, instead he had to settle for a quick kill. Within seconds, the felines were done and [Bad Guy] was just a not-so-fond memory.” For another, there’s no discussion of the relationship problem that causes Carson and Keegan’s Big Misunderstanding. There are maybe 5 paragraphs of “I love you and I’m holding my breath to see whether you say it back,” and then the characters all behave as though everything’s been resolved.
    - The misuse of commas in this story is excessive, even when compared with the rest of the m/m genre. They’re present when they shouldn’t be, absent when they SHOULD be present, used improperly to connect complete sentences (thus creating comma splices), etc.

Overall comments: I have a huge soft spot for shifter stories, so I didn’t hate this one in spite of its shortcomings. However, I think I’m finished with this series, partly because the stories are underdeveloped, and partly because the editing is horrible. This story and the one before it contain mistakes that could have been corrected after a single readthrough from start to finish (example: “There was a large guns strapped to each of his hips”).

at is a Cheetah shifter and computer tech guy. He is also one of a small group of shifters who cannot hold his shift.

Keegan is one of the lost shifters, although he does not know it. That is about to all change when he is attacked by the Ravens.

When Keegan is attacked by the Ravens, a group of shifters who can shift into ravens and who are the mortal enemies of feline shifters, it is only through the help of another feline shifter called Seth that he survives. But then Seth disappears and Keegan is forced to call the phone number the man told him to if he did not come back. When Rat picks up the call, he believes it is Seth, but instead he finds a frightened young shifter on the other end. Rather than tell his superior, Mitchell, he has found the man’s younger brother he decides to go and get Keegan himself and bring him home. When he meets Keegan for the first time the attraction is instant and mutual, but Rat believes that when Keegan finds out that he cannot hold his shift and is thus defective, he will no longer feel the same way about him. However, he does not take into account Keegan’s kind and fair nature, nor the fact that Keegan is falling head over heels for him. Unfortunately, none of his superiors are happy about the fact that Keegan and Rat have started a relationship together, though they begin to soften over time. While all is not perfect, it is about to get even more dangerous when an infiltrator working with the Ravens begins working to drive a wedge between Keegan and Rat. Will they be able to survive what happens next?

This is only the second book I’ve read by Ms. Hecht and I have to say I LOVED it! The world building is fantastic, as is the character creation. These characters do not fall into the standard type of cookie cutter characters that some authors write, they are unique in their own right and I really enjoyed that. The love scenes were phenomenal and emotional, which is key for me to really enjoy the story. Plus there was plenty of suspense and action. I plan on reading the rest of this series, one book by one decadent book. I highly recommend this book, if you love m/m romance and shifters you will too!
