Our Grandparents: A Global Album (Global Fund for Children Books) Reviews

Fantastic. I wish there were MORE books like this, with real photos of real people and minimal, clear text. These books are perfect to share with groups or one-on-one, depicting real life around the world in different places and cultures.

Annotation: Grandparents are normally important people in a child's life. Grandparents are normally someone children look up to for information, and a fun time being together. The connection between a grandparent and a grandchild is important, and they can explore their world together and read, and play and have fun, and it occurs all over the world. Being able to learn from them is a very important part of the relationship of a grandparent with a grandchild/ren.
Classroom Connection/Reader Response: Understanding about your family history, and where they came from is important to helping a student learn more about themselves. Older elementary students could interview a grandparent about what it was like for them growing up, what they did, where they went, etc. and then they could compare it to the way they do things now. So for instance, a grandparent might say they walked to school 2 miles uphill into the wind through the snow both ways, and a child now might say that they ride a bus. Of course there is such a huge change in technology between these generations as well, and so the students could then create a large Venn Diagram of the similarities and differences between the two, to share with the class. Another idea for younger elementary students could be to draw a picture of something they and their grandparents like to do together, and then they could write a sentence about it using one of the bolded words in the text like learn, play, explore, celebrate, etc. They could then have their grandparent come in and they could share what they do together to the class. -
A beautiful book about what grandparents all of the world share with other grandparents and their grandchildren. Grandparents listen, explore, teach, play, celebrate, share and above all love their families. The pictures are taken from countries all over the world and the authors included a map of the world to show where the photos originally were taken.
Stories are wonderful, illustrations are beautiful, but nothing can replace photographs with simple non-fiction text. I think it is important to share non-fiction books in a story time setting. This book works reads well with one or two sentences per layout and showcasing real people from all over the world.
Theme: grandparents
Additional themes: families, photography, around the world

This tribute to grandparents around the world is written in the voice of today’s grandchildren as they honor and celebrate their grandmothers and grandfathers. “Grandparents play and laugh with us. / Grandparents teach us what they know. / Together we learn about the world around us.” Bright, vivid photographs of families from around the world accompany the spare text, celebrating different ethnicities and activities. Each photograph is labeled with the country of origin, and a map at the end provides helpful context.

Good choice for this year's SRC to show global families, this is a nice selection for toddlers. It could have more information about the different countries, but then it wouldn't really be toddler/preschool friendly. Instead it shows concrete things that kids can relate to and shows them how it takes place all over the world.

Loved this book of grandparents and their grandchildren, made me miss my grandma, with whom I was very close. Simple, positive messages and large photos make this book very accessible for even young children; a big, colorful world map at the end shows where all the families live. Can't wait to share it with K and PreK students.

After I read this book at Suttles child development center, I fell in love with it. This book reminded me of my grandparents and all the nice things they used to do for me when I was a child and they were alive. This book can teach children to be appreciative of their grandparents. It will also teach them to cherish the knowledge that is being passed on to them from their grandparents.
