Shadow of Deceit (Shadow Lake Survival, #1) Reviews

A new series and some new characters. A few appeared briefly in a previous book, but readers will have the opportunity to get better acquainted with the Maddox brothers. Ryan Maddox and Mia Blackburn have a shared history they want to leave behind. In fact, they would prefer to leave a lot more than their shared history behind. Almost from the git-go we see what Mia is made of when she rescues a young girl from a burning barn. Mia is strong, determined, and compassionate. Her life in Atlanta was good, and she wants to fulfill an obligation so she can return. After she rescues the young girl, she has to be rescued by Ryan. As he learns more, he is determined to protect Mia, although he does not want to resume what they had before she left Shadow Lake. Someone is determined to chase her out of town, or kill her, whichever it takes to get rid of her. I love her tenacity. On the softer side, I love the way she responds to Jessie, the young girl she rescued. She has a soft spot for hurting children. Apparently, she also has a soft spot for cone-headed dogs as well, because she accepts the care of Bandit who had belonged to her Uncle Wally. Whatever the cone was supposed to accomplish, I am uncertain whether or not it was working. Bandit seemed to manage to get into plenty of trouble in spite of it. Mia and Ryan both had lessons to learn, such as their shoulders were not big enough to carry all of the weight they both were trying to carry. Also, the past was behind them and they needed to let it go. You will have to read the story to see if Mia survived the killer, and to find out if they were successful in learning to let bygones be bygones. I enjoyed the intense suspense and action mixed with faith and romance. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
