This was a really funny book. Full of the same great humour as the other books under the title of ‘The Floods’. I know that both me and my little brother loved this book series, and I recommend it to everyone, as it wields the rare power of humour that all ages can understand and laugh at.

3.5*
This is not one of my favourite Floods books. There were some really fun moments but it felt a little disjointed and less cohesive. I enjoyed the aim at some romance as well as the sandcastle building but the holiday aspect felt weird even for this family. I am still not entirely sure what prompted them to go on holiday in the first place. -
The book is like fairy floss, very appealing but sickly and with no substance....I think I have just read too many Colin Thompson books by now and they are all too similar.
He seems to make a point of making his books value-free there is no sort of politics in them apart from a childishly arbitrary good vs evil and then the rest is slapstick with terrible puns (ok I will admit I actually enjoy some of them). The two best things about this particular one of the 3,000 identical Floods books was firstly the prologue. First, that prologue with a whole page of "blah blah di blah" (I mean quite literally) and then a rant against the common (and boring) practice of restating everything that has already happened in the books leading up to this one. He quite fairly points out that if you want to know you could always read those books. Well played sir!
The other good thing is the sort of products the Floods use, and the way he has ads for them at the back which is so funny it verges on social commentary (but don't tell him because I do think he is trying to keep the books apolitical). Super blockout SPF 15000 "now with added sulphuric acid for that gorgeous textured look" YES!!!! And there are charming little things like that scattered throughout. I still have a soft spot for Parsnip (Snip-Snip) and I still approve of Thompson's misuse of footnotes. At times it grows wearying but I think he is quite smart about using the method just enough to assert his right to be a footnote anarchist and then giving it up. So that's pretty masterfully done!
I could do without the constant putting down of Belgians. Why Thompson WHY???? Gender in the book is boringly conventional too (Merlinmary notwithstanding). Basically I am a wholemeal bread with chia seeds person when it comes to my comedy. If like my children, you like fibre-free fairy floss...this whole series might appeal to you. Or read one at random, I think one is more enjoyable than continuing to read any longer! -
The Floods (whole series review) by Colin Thompson:
It's been copious amounts of time between when I read these and when I'm writing this. As a result, I have little to offer in my review. Regardless, I wanted to leave something here because 'The Floods' is still one of the best things I ever invested my time into. Even if I was 12 years old when I read them.
This series of books is so good! Such a fantastic bundle of stories and characters. Not difficult to read at all but still complex enough to enjoy at a more mature age. To this day, 'The Floods' remains one of my most prized possessions and I would 100% suggest these to a child/sibling/friend of mine to enjoy.
Of course, given the cover artwork, it's a little on the odd side of things. But even as a young child, I didn't find it scary or too weird. It's a wonderful balance of action/adventure and the characters are written wonderfully. -
kok covernya beda ya? udah gitu bukannya ini buku keenam? well, sudahlah, males edit...

Read this to/with my 8 yr old daughter ;
Like all the floods series, great entertainment and ideal bed time reading for a parent and a child. Thompson writes with enough subtle humour to still give the grown ups the odd chuckle, and to also keep the little ones enthralled. -
Not bad actually, but the jokes are getting tired...
-
A short, sharp, funny and interesting read.
