In "Book of the Future", a 1960s small-town librarian is bored with all the books that surround her. She’s memorized every word in her little library and yearns for something new. Something different. Her desire is soon met when she discovers an odd device in the book return drop box. The device is made of glass and metal, it’s thin and reflective, like a mirror. But not like any mirror she’s seen before. This mirror is dark and covered in words. New words. Different words. Countless, endless, changing words…

This was such a fun story to read. I really enjoyed the setting of the 1960's, and I think the story covered a topic that we've all wondered about on our own. What would people of the past think of the technology of today? Many have speculated about what a brain-melting experience that would be, and they aren't too far off from the vision shared by Lastufka and Horner within this story.
If you're looking for a fun, horror short-story that spirals deeper and darker as the story progresses, then make sure to check out Book of the Future! -
i'm officially in my short-story era, i think!!! i'm still trucking along through all the varied stories in OBSOLESCENCE, but this lil short story caught my eye this morning so i tucked it into my bag and read it on my lunch break! first, i love the typesetting and overall internal design of this lil book, same with the stunning eye design on the cover! Shortwave really excels at committing to their aesthetics, which i really admire. i don't want to say much about the story itself, as it's worth experiencing for the first time going in blind (👀)— but i love the journal-entry styling and the suspicion that mounts with every entry! fantastic, truly <3

note: i was sent a copy to review by Shortwave, but my thoughts are my own. -
I loved this short story! It's told in the first person as something terrible happens to the character. It's gripping and creepy. I'd love to read more from these authors.

Book of the Future is a cute little chapbook that came with my order of Obsolescence and I was impressed with the quality. The uneven typesetting and handwritten fonts added to the feel of reading a journal. This short story was a quick fun and spooky read. I appreciated the nods to readers, the most horrific thing of course being the brutal treatment of books thrown down those evil library return boxes.

Very fun, I liked the visual aspect of her slipping into madness as she starts to feel her eyes melting
