Simon Higgins has and interesting background upon which he drew inspiration for this novel of young adults fiction. Born in England and emigrating to Australia at the tender age of six he grew up in Adelaide where he later joined the Police Force, in 1986. After rising to the rank of Senior Constable he became disillusioned with the role Police played in society, so, in 1994 left that profession to become a Private Investigator. His experiences throughout both careers led him to writing as a form of escape from reality. Yet Simon reflects reality within his writing quite vividly.
The cover shows a frightened teenage girl in a darkened room with a sinister man silhouetted in the doorway. Simon sets the scene for drama from the first page. We meet an ordinary family, living in an ordinary suburb, in a place that could be any ordinary part of any city in Australia. This ordinary place becomes a scene where an extraordinary series of horrendous crimes is committed.
This family is Police Detective Dave Drapers family, and their lives are entwined with the stress and frustrations, which revolve around his work. Jade is the central character; she’s a teenage computer freak with a younger brother who teases her unmercifully. Jades mother is worn out with concern for her husband. Jade follows secretly her fathers current case that revolves around a series of mysterious murders have been happening in their own suburb. The Police have come up blank in their investigations. Jade wants to help but her parents don’t want her to get involved.
Jade enlists the help of her two best friends Tran Wing and Lucy Van Daal. Tran is seventeen and more of a computer whiz than Jade, and Lucy begins thinking that it’s all a game. With the help of some inside Police file information they discover a likely link in the murders. The Policeman Jade uses to help get the computer download becomes an accessory to the final plan to capture the murderer. Bruce King is a rising star in the Police Force who wants to really outshine, he also has a romantic interest in Jade.
All the characters weave an interesting combination to the plot that rapidly becomes a heart-beating thriller. The trap these innocent young teenagers and rookie Police Detective set becomes their own web. Doctor Id is a masterful opponent intent on foiling their plan.
