"Ma'am, I'm not one of the bad guys."
So says the handsome man Martha Gabler encounters near her isolated mountain cabin. Tristan Sinclair claims he's an ATF agent working undercover. And that if she doesn't play along as his unexpected girlfriend, they'll both end up dead. Nursing a broken heart, Martha knows a thing or two about love that isn't real. Still, she calls up all her faith and turns her shaky trust over to Tristan. Soon she's hoping he'll take on a new guarding her for the rest of her life.
The Guardians Mission (The Sinclair Brothers) Reviews

'What do You want me to learn from this, Lord? There must be something. Some life lesson that wil hurt, but that will help my faith grow.'
I only recently discovered Shirlee McCoy's books, but I was hooked from the very first one. She does inspirational suspense well. Her books are 'keep you on the edge of your seat' seriously suspenseful, full of believable characters and scenarios and the plus is a great spiritual element, which she is not afraid to include. Boldly. This one is a wonderful book, but more importantly, it ministered to me during a time I truly needed to hear the words here. In the above quote. I am on a mission to read all her books. And she has a lot. I highly recommend this author. Very much. -
A really good read.

Absolute drivel.
Martha (who is Martha half the time, and Marti half the time - MAKE UP YOUR EVER LOVIN' MIND, HELLO!) was dating a guy who 'had a reputation for being arrogant and thoughtless' (pg 27), and after TWO YEARS of him, suddenly decides he's a jerk and she can't be his wife. WoW. wOw... she's *stellar*.
She's taken off to spend a weekend at her dad's cabin in the mountains to 'grieve' her lost love (McCoy's words, NOT mine), to stop her "crying jag". Although with all the wasted time...! She's nearly beyond the age of ever finding another person. She's... twenty-EIGHT years old, after all. (((gag))) What the heck...!?! That's old? Really? And her dad is seventy, so he must've had her when he was in his FORTIES... the math in this thing sucks from the get-go.
Why the cabin and not someplace new and interesting with people? Because she's mad at the peoples. It's been THREE WHOLE DAYS since she broke her engagement, and all of the sympathy pouring out of her friends, family, and church is driving her crazy. THREE DAYS, and the entire church is up in her business? What did she do, make her dating status a prayer request or something!?!?! THIS. IS. STUPID!!!
So up to the cabin she goes. Only it's raining, and she's getting wet and unhappy(ier), but does she turn back and go to a pretty little hotel with a pool and pay-per-view to binge Jane Austen on? Nooooo. She schleps her tiny backpack up a hiking trail to a cabin they haven't opened in two years - can you say spider/grime/dirt hell?- LEAVING HER CELLPHONE IN THE CAR. Um... if she twists an ankle, is injured or attacked, she has NO means of getting help. But then, we haven't seen a single smart thing out of Martha/Marti, yet.
Into the cabin she goes... and senses someone behind her. He grabs her, and...
Tristan Sinclair is undercover as 'Sky Davis' to bring down the proverbial drug dealers with soulless eyes who glare, sneer, and brandish guns just because McCoy says so. It's pitiful - like a B-rated movie. He was waiting in the cabin for a cat named Johnson to meet up with him, and they'd go to the big deal together. Except now Martha/Marti/Sunshine shows up.
So does Tristan/Sky grab Martha/Marti/Sunshine, drag her into a corner and say, "Duck down, don't move, and I'll leave, and you'll never see me again - just don't let the people coming know you're here, ok? It's important." Nooooooo... He growls a threat in her ear, freaks her out, causes her to fight him, she dashes out into the path of the incoming Johnson, and now she's stuck in the middle of the 'operation'.
He's as big an idiot as she is, I swear. Or is it that the author doesn't think *anything* through, and wrangles up this whole situation because *suspense novel*? Regardless this whole thing requires WAYYYYY more suspension of logic, reality, and intelligence than I'm willing to put up with. This is ridiculous, stupid, forced, and lousy.
And I'm sick of translating 'Marti' into 'Martha'... and dealing with her stupidity. 'Ooooh, I must stop and get a chocolate bar out of my pack! Please pause the mission for me, if you would!' C'mon....!!!!
And you can tell this was written years ago - The heroine is Martha, her best friend is Doris, she's wearing a nylon jacket (who - since 1992 - has put on a nylon jacket, for the love of all that's holy?!?!) And the binding of the book says 2008, so... I can't even.
I can't do it. I don't get into checking my brain at the door in order to read a novel. I have too many on my shelf to deal with this nonsense.
DNF @ pg 30. -
Still 3 stars!
I KNEW I read this on before. Well now I have read the whole series... -
Not my favorite book. Not sure what it was about it that made it just ok.

The Sinclair Brothers
Book 1
Even though there are four brothers and one sister, only three of the brothers are covered in these stories. I believe the sister is married (from a line in the second book).
In this book, we meet Tristan Sinclair in a pretty dramatic way. The book itself starts out peaceful - Martha Gabler getting away to her father's cabin deep int he woods for a little TLC after she dumps her fiance. But TLC is not what she gets! She doesn't know it, but big trouble is waiting in the cabin. She is grabbed and forced to stay with two men who lead her even deeper into the woods. She doesn't know it, but she's about to be in the middle of a police raid. The only problem is - one of the bad guys escape and her protector - he becomes her bodyguard!
Things soon take a turn for the worse when her father's life is threatened.
The Suspense: This book grabbed me at the first page. After the initial problem was over, it calmed down for a bit until Tristan showed up, then it got exciting again. It was interesting to read wondering how they were ever going to get out of this alive.
The Romance: It was there almost from the beginning. I loved Tristan's method of shutting her up so she didn't let something slip that could get them both killed. He wasn't shy about sharing his feelings for her. I loved his calling her "Sunshine" and "Babe." -
I enjoyed this book. I had already read the Defender's Duty(book 3 in the Sinclair brothers series ) & enjoyed it, so when I saw that there was a series I had to read it. I wasn't disappointed. This is a"Christian Romance" novel but don't let that scare you off. Yes it does mention God & they go to church & pray, that's about it. I like this series as its not to preach. You can enjoy the book. It is action packed & suspenseful with a good love story. There is no sex scenes though there is kissing and such-I'd rate it PG in that respect. It doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story though. It is an easy read. The characters are very likable. I would recommend this book if you enjoy the things I listed above. Book 2 in the series is The Protector's Promise with Grayson Sinclair. Book 3 is Defender's Duty with Jude Sinclair (both books written by Shirlee McCoy).

I would reread this one in a heartbeat! The only problem I don't like is that relationships that form from something so drastic, like the setup in this book, usually don't last. They moved way too fast, and realistically, it was all the adrenaline or something. It all happened in less then a month or so. I'm hoping the other books in this series continue their relationship and how they work it out.

actually my first steeple hill suspense. got me hooooked.
-
Great read.
-
Wonderful!!!!
-
Awesome story. Her emotions were so real that I cried....ALOT!!
-
Another good Christian book that is not a tear-jerker, but does have some scary moments in it. The budding romance is great and the message is not overly preachy.
-
From tthe very beginning Tristan and Marti are amazing together! I love that Marti isn't a damsel in distress, she is strong but also stubborn! LoLove the story!
-
Nice start to a series. Also, it features the quintessential perfect hero syndrome. "Boys in books are just better."

I really enjoyed this fast paced easy read.
