A Feral Christmas (Lost Shifters #2) Reviews

I liked this second story in the "Lost Shifters" series as much as the first. The uphill struggle these two main characters have to face is even bigger than the first couple's.
Brent is a feline shifter and Daniel is a hawk shifter. Not only do they have to overcome the fact that cats and birds supposedly don't get along, Daniel is also seen as one of the "bad guys", since the hawks helped to take away the shifter children twenty years ago. This doesn't stop Brent from being attracted to him, and leads him to listen to what Daniel has to say.
This story adds a whole lot of suspense to the emotional mix, as well as a lot of background to the bigger story that goes across all the volumes and holds them together. Great stuff which I enjoyed a lot. -
Jaguar shifter, Brent & Hawk shifter, Daniel
Daniel is one of the bad guys because apparently the hawk shifters helped to take away the shifter children twenty years ago after the ravens’ attack.
Brent is the second in command, brother of the Feline’s leader (Mitchell) and he is looking for three more of his lost siblings. Daniel may know where their location is.
Cats and Birds DO mix! Sylvester and Tweety have been lying all along. -
4.5 stars
The second book of the series features Brent, second-in-command, who is on a mission to track down a Hawk shifter, in order to get information about the lost feline shifters. The Hawk, Daniel, is deep in hiding after being cast off by his pack after the decision to save the feline kids twenty years ago.
I am completely smitten with the Lost Shifters series *sigh*. I really love how Brent and Daniel get together (cuff, kinky *g*). More so that Brent -- whom I always picture will be the top is actually not. Though since Daniel was the Alpha back then of his pack, that makes sense. Sorry, a bit rambling here. Anyway, back to Brent and Daniel ... yeah, I love the idea of taking a mate that "raises eyebrow" -- cat and bird don't mix, remember? -- and the ending, the HEA, is so beautiful my breath was caught when I read this. My favorite book so far of the Lost Shifters series. -
I really liked this story! It was really funny and low-angst with a lot of sexual tension. Brent and Daniel have to be near the top of the horniest shifters list! They were wanting to do each other 5 seconds after meeting…even after one dude stabs the other!!! And they could not keep their
handsmouths off each other...even in the middle of gun fire...and wide open parking lots. *cough* Anyway, it was a cute story and the characters were sweet and of course they fell in love like 10 seconds after laying eyes on each other...but who's keeping time?
So far this series has been fun and I'm very interested in finding out what happens next. -

So, I thought I'd write a few reviews of the books in this series since it was the first MM series I've read.

I can't get my head around it - I enjoyed the story, but again I wished it was longer and didn't end so quickly.
But then again, what can be done, anyway people have said that good things come to an end, so with Daniel and Brent's story.
Brent is probably one of my favorite characters from the entire feline coalition. Second in command, he is charged with great responsibility. Not only are all eyes on him and he is expected to set a personal example, but he is charged with an important mission. To find the shifter, which will lead them not only to all the lost shifters, but also to his brothers.
Whoever said feline and hawk are a dangerous combination hasn't met Brent and Daniel.
Daniel is the type of bad boy that women die for. Everyone knows that the hawk shifters were involved in the raven attack on the coalition. But no one realized, that it was Daniel who saved their children, who today everyone was still looking for and called "lost shifters".
And all this is a prerequisite for a lot of tension, interesting situations and of course - insta love. We start with action...we go through a kidnapping, very kinky and an unexpected ending. -
I didn't like this as much as the first. The instalove was truly ridiculous--one guy had only been conscious maybe an hour, hour and a half, when he decided he was in love with the guy who had kidnapped him, who incidentally was also in love, although he had been at least awake for like eight hours while the other guy was drugged. And it wasn't even fated mates, either. That at least I can handle, because who can argue with the universe? But this? THis even stretched credibility for me, and I'm very forgiving in this area.
It wasn't particularly original, either, same worry over whether others will accept shifters of different species being mates, same alpha by inheritance, same hurt background, same posturing if someone so much as sneezes at the mate, and both being chiseled, muscled, sex gods. At least there wasn't really an age difference.
I'm a sucker for these I love you I'll die without you books, though, so I keep reading them. I just wish the action had been at the end instead of the beginning. There wasn't much of a climax. I mean, stuffed happened but it wasn't very exciting or too dangerous and the MCs were sort of out of the way while the other stuff happened.
I wish they'd have more female shifters. I like Cassie but one isn't enough. I mean, I still want the books to be primarily about men, and no female bits involved, but that doesn't mean there can't be strong and interesting women, too.
I'm going to leave off my nitpicks this time because it's silly to expect much from a series which has accumulated 26 stories in four years. Yeah, not a lot of time for really deep stuff or fact-checking or anything like that.
But I did enjoy it and of course I want to read the next one and of course ASAP because I'm in the mood for this sort of thing. At least there's like a billion of the stories in this series. That's unusual and wonderful in this genre still in its infancy.
3.5 stars rounded down because I am so over the whole "let's remove adverbs because writer's are told to and let's do so by simply turning them into adjectives and thereby using poor grammar" thing. ["He didn't think he'd be able to orgasm quick." I agree it's unlikely he'd be able to ejaculate the skin under his fingernails.] -

Buona Lettura. -

Well this one starts with a bang! Snow storms and shit blowing up. :D Works for me! 4.5 stars that I’ll easily round up to 5. I actually really like Brent and Daniel together despite the unrealistic insta-love. I give a lot more leniency with that in shifter books than others though so it really doesn’t bother me too much here.
One of their brothers may have been found and returned home to them, but Brent knows there are three more waiting to be found. Not to mention all the other shifter children lost in the Raven raids years before. While his sister and brothers may be disappointed he won’t be home for Christmas they understand. The only person who might have a clue as to where they are is the Hawk leader who gave the order to save them years before. And Brent finally has a bead on where he’s disappeared too. Tracking the man in the massive blizzard that’s hit the area isn’t exactly fun, but seeing him in person fully knocks Brent for a loop.
Daniel knows someone’s watching him, he just can’t pin it down. He’s spent years hiding from the Ravens that want to destroy him like they did when they decimated the Hawks ranks for their betrayal. But being on the run for so many years has honed Daniels senses and while the kitty may think he’s being quiet and all Daniel sensed him the minute he crossed the threshold. Being pulled out into the storm and on the run from the Raven’s again isn’t exactly what Daniel had in mind this holiday season. Yet, he one look at his kidnappers face and he can’t turn away.
Ok I’ll be honest, I love a good explosion and Brent just makes me giggle. I love those bad boy destructive types. Someone good with snark gets me every time. I loved how dominant Brent can be out in the field and within his role as his brother’s second, but that Daniel just makes him melt. Of course Daniel is all perfect alpha and domineering. They’re just so cute. :D Even out of his head Brent is adorable in his protectiveness of Daniel. Drugged up shifters are just too funny.
Yeah, the insta-love here is a little ridiculous even for a shifter book considering Daniel spends most of the first hours they’re together drugged and passed out. But, come on, Brent was obsessed and protective over a photograph. Clearly we’re talking mate bond immediacy here. I’ll give it a pass. Besides it makes for adorably growly kitties. I swear large cat shifters are my favorite. Yum! Jaguars!
I love the personalities of the characters in this series. They’re distinct for all that the books are relatively short. Rat cracks me up and the inner-workings of Brent’s family are lovely to see. If anything I get annoyed because some of the action gets truncated for the length of the story. I would have loved to see more expansion on what it took to get the list back from Daniel’s uncle, to see more development of what it means for the two to be together. The beginning was fantastically paced with all the action, but I felt like the ending got a little rushed all together. I wanted more. But then I always do.
The concept here is great and the story is fast paced and flies along. There are a few minor editing issues, but they really didn’t detract from the story for me at all. I’ve read this one before and loved it just as much the second (or third, or fourth time). It’s the holiday season and it seemed like the perfect time for another re-read. Hope for the holidays, that’s here in spades. The family is starting to coming together and there is hope to find the rest of their family members. Add in a few hawks and even Daniel gets his family happily ever after. -
I could not open FERAL CHRISTMAS fast enough, because that’s what shifter books does for me – make me want more and with the bonus info that the shifters were a secret arm of the government/military the plot only thickens and I was certainly wanting more.
This book is Brent’s story. Brent is the comic relief of the outfit and he can be a little hard to stomach because of his too laid back and too comical mannerism. Taking onboard a mission on his own to find the one person who knows exactly what happened to the lost children as well as the only person who might know where to get a full list of the children that went missing, Brent brings the enemy right to the door steps of Daniel.
Daniel is a Hawk shifter who has not shifted in years and keeps a low profile and outside of the shifter world to be honest. Morals plays a big part in Daniel’s life and he knows he has to help Brent, even if he is pissed off at the man himself.
As expected an attraction forms between the two and some rather salacious drama happens due to the bossy attitude of Brent’s brother.
I know I am being a bit cagey with the detail – but it is a rather short book and I would be giving away the whole plot if I go into further detail.
Two things though, The Ravens, who are a race of really large Raven shifters are sworn enemies of all other shifters as it would seem are getting just as close as the team are at getting to the lost children. And a new shifter set is added to the mix, which is a a good thing – but it does give rise to the fact that the fur will start to fly - because.
Cats and birds – do not mix well. -
LOVED the dynamic between the two men. BDSM focused solely really on the D/s and informal as hell. Daniel taking charge just made sense - and it fit the story well. Not a "mine, mate" but still a "mine" book - so insta-yes but very engaging. I am enjoying the continuing story of what happened to the Lost Shifters and how the world is building. Looking forward to #3!

Waiting desperately for Rat's story!!

I couldn't imagine anything more difficult than what the main character experienced in the first book of this series, until I got into this second installment. Not only are the main characters still battling the nasty Ravens, but the love story is between a jaguar shifter and a hawk shifter. Cats and birds do not get along. Just ask Tweety and Sylvester, if you don't believe me. In 'A Feral Christmas' the author addressed the ongoing battle between the feline shifters and the Ravens, but also introduced another bird shifter species which should, by all rights, despise the felines, too, and then she gave them a romance. It was pretty exciting to watch.
Brent is a smart aleck, no doubt about it, so his first interaction with Daniel doesn't go over all that well. Gee, I was so surprised. Daniel is the only link that Brent and his family have to the lost shifters, including their other three brothers. Jacyn identified Daniel as the hawk shifter who left him with humans instead of killing him twenty years ago. Brent has tracked Daniel down to get information, but, unfortunately, the hawk shifter has been on the run for twenty years and wants nothing to do with Brent or his questions. The fact that Brent smarts off doesn't help the situation. When the Ravens show up, all bets are off, and Daniel has no choice but to run with Brent since the Ravens want Daniel dead.
Brent and Daniel return to the feline coalition's headquarters and it becomes pretty clear to both of them that this is more than just a passing attraction. Brent has a bad history though with people claiming they want to keep him but then they end up leaving when they realize that Brent will never give up the search for his brothers. So Brent is determined to enjoy this time but he knows Daniel will leave him too, in the end. With Daniel's help, Mitchell, Brent, and a feline team are able to locate the one remaining Hawk elder who knows where the children were placed. Even though Daniel was the Hawk alpha at the time, and he made the decision to not kill the children, the Ravens destroyed most of the Hawks and the ones left alive endorsed the elders banishing Daniel. Poor Daniel tried to do a good thing and was rewarded by death to his people and hate from his own family. Daniel is able to get the floppy disc (snort) from the elder and once Rat accesses the information, it gives the coalition the names of all the lost shifters and where they were placed.
The story isn't over yet, though. Brent got his Christmas miracle in the form of a loving man and Daniel got a little bit of family in return. This was a wonderful addition to the series and it just makes me desperate for more.

One fateful night twenty years ago, Ravens came in to slaughter many feline shifters and their young. Mitchell, Brent, and Cassie were separated from four of their litter mates and believed them dead. Recently, they located and reunited with one of the missing litter mates, Jacyn. Through his dream walk, they learned that a hawk shifter, Daniel, was present on that terrible night. Brent is on a mission to locate Daniel to learn the whereabouts of his other missing siblings. Daniel has been on the run from the Ravens and hiding as a human for the past twenty years. After discovering that Daniel and his fellow hawks saved the feline young rather than destroy them, the Ravens eradicated most of his kind.
A Feral Christmas is Brent and Daniel's story of overcoming loss and prejudice to find their very own HEA.
I enjoyed this second installment in the Lost Shifter series. Brent was a little irritating at first - very arrogant and constantly joking and goading - but he eventually grew on me. I really liked Daniel. He suffered tremendously for doing the right thing but was not jaded or bitter or prone to pity parties. It was nice to reunite with the extended feline family; although, I would have liked to read more about Jacyn and Logan. Rat is an interesting character and I look forward to reading his story next.
Bottom line: an entertaining sequel to
Primal Passions.
Re-Read on 12/16/13: This one was kinda meh the second time around. -
3.5 stars.
I liked this book better than the first book in the series as it goes a little further in developing the history behind the Lost Shifter children. I also liked Daniel and Brent as a couple better than I liked Logan and Jacyn from the first book.
Brent, the brother of the Coalition of Shifters leader Mitchell, is sent to find Daniel, the Hawk Alpha and leader who was allied with the Ravens 20 years ago. Mitchell and Brent now know that Daniel holds the key to the location of the missing shifters. Brent's mission is to not only find Daniel and bring him back, but to convince him to help.
20 years ago Daniel, the Hawk Alpha, made a decision that he felt was right, but that led to the eradication of his race by their allies the Ravens. Hiding from the shifter world, Daniel lives alone and moves around, never giving in to his natural desire to shift into his hawk form. When Brent finds Daniel, Daniel's haven is discovered by Ravens and he must escape with Brent.
While this story is cast in the same mold as the first story - shifter is sent on mission to find another shifter, shifters fall in lust/love, shifters do not feel they can be together...the fact that the overall series plot is more developed makes this book a little stronger for me. Thus 3.5 stars instead of 3.
Still a fun, easy series to read. -

This review is for all of the Lost Shifters, Wayne County Wolves, and Assassin's Loyalty books since they are all interconnected and I read them back-to-back pretty much nonstop over a 10 day period. If I have anything to say about a particular book I'll add it under this bulk review. First, I'd like to mention these are more like novellas than books but they have the same underlying theme and pretty much continue where the last left off but with a different couple.
Everything starts out with the Lost Shifters. To summarize there was a war between the feline shifters and the raven shifters. 20 years or so before the first book there was an all out slaughter in which hundreds of feline homes were attacked and burned down all of the occupants believed to be killed. Turns out that the babies and toddlers that were assumed lost were not. They were hidden within the human foster care system for the most part. I won't say how because that'd be a big spoiler. In addition to foster care some kids were sold into slavery and that's where the whole assassin thing comes in. A couple of the main characters marry into the wolf pack so that's where those books come in as well.
Pros: Since the books are so short there are no long drawn out boring details or general angst. There's usually only one sex scene although it's normally long as hell. Which makes the fact some people shelved these as erotica confusing. I liked the world building and even though there were times I think a little more info might have been nice it never detracted from the story or left me confused. Most of the relationships were a sort of love at first sight thing. Or maybe lust or obsession? Despite this the shifters all seem adamant that's not a thing that happens. There wasn't one character I didn't like. My favorite character was Shane and he must have been the author's as well since he got a few extra books and a side series Shane's Chronicles. There's no big end battle or anything but the last book Baily's 9th Life does pretty much tie things up nicely. I think if I'd been reading the series when they were released I'd be a bit miffed because that book didn't come out until a few years later if you weren't reading the assassins books. Also, these books all have some really funny moments and/or dialog.
Cons: The last several books didn't appear to have been edited at all. If if wasn't for the fact that I was so invested in the overall story arc I would have quit reading them. Things like sent instead of scent and too instead of to they instead of them and random wrong words completely. There were also a couple of times that things were said/thought almost verbatim in different parts of a book as if the author forgot she'd already put that info in there already. At the start of the series, they state that all feline shifters are bisexual but at some point the author must have forgotten that detail because suddenly there are gay shifters and homophobia and all this hate. Which brings me to my next con, the themes of the different books started to repeat. Suddenly all these shifters had been thrown out of their previous pack or coalition or human home for being gay. And throughout this huge series of books there was only one straight couple. Like not even a straight friend or whatever. Even the females were all lesbians. It was just kinda unrealistic especially with the whole gay hate thing going on. Usually there's at least a few couples or friends or something on the periphery in gay romances especially in a world this huge. Which brings me to my final con, I had a hard time remembering who was who and what there story was after awhile especially if they weren't mentioned much in previous books. I wish there had been some sort of glossary to review.
Despite the cons, I would still recommend these books. All-in-all I really enjoyed them and was dreading the end although the editing in the last few books really had me also looking forward to the end if I'm being honest.
A Feral Christmas has pretty much nothing to do with Christmas at all but has info you'll need for the rest of the series so it's not one you want to skip. -
Good but too short
I'm definitely a fan of this world but I really wish the books were longer. Just when I'm getting fully on board with the couple, it's over. I liked the pairing of feline Brent with hawk Daniel. The only thing better than a car and a bird would be a cat and a dog. I really hope that's coming down the road. This book didn't have as much action as the first book and I missed that but it was still really good. I love the interactions with the team. I'm excited to see Rat find his mate and I can't wait until Mitchell, Brent, Cassie and Jacyn are reunited with their missing siblings. -
I'm not sure why I didn't like this more.
I do know I like Mitchell less and less. -
Carino ma brevissimo.
