Yasmin Ahmad left a vibrant legacy, and it is still strange to talk about her in the past tense. In order to deal with his grief, Amir Muhammad, fellow Malaysian filmmaker and friend, watched anew her six feature-length films (RABUN, SEPET, GUBRA, MUKHSIN, MUALLAF and TALENTIME), as well as several of her most popular commercials. Neither an obituary nor a conventional work of film criticism, this book was written just a month after her funeral and is Amir's personal look at the stories, but with quite a few tangents of his own. Chatty and informative, YASMIN AHMAD'S FILMS can be devoured not only by established fans but newcomers to her work. It is also a tribute to one of Malaysia's most amazing daughters. Includes 24 pages of color photographs. All the writer's royalties from the first edition will be donated to the Mercy - Yasmin Ahmad Fund for Children.

Before I write this, I must admit that I never watch any of Yasmin Ahmad movies (maybe because I'm not really a movie person)

Thank you Amir Muhammad, this book makes me want to find and watch all Yasmin Ahmad movies and her commercials.

There were so many brilliant messages in YA's movies, it intrigues me so much I kept on pestering people around me 'WEH BEST GILA BUKU NI/WEH TAU TAK KENAPA SCENE NI MACAMNI/WEH SEBENARNYA KO TAU TAK KENAPA YASMIN AHMAD BUAT GINI and told them to read this book and watch her movies (even I, myself belum tengok lagi omg why Farah)

Her movies were so light, tapi weh, brilliant gila.

  • IZZAT is lost down the rabbithole

In the name of Love, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

I can still remember the moment I found out of Yasmin Ahmad's death. 2009 was the hardest year of my life so far, and upon hearing of the reports that she had collapsed after a meeting at TV3 on the internet, I was still hopeful enough that it was just a scare. But then the only sureness in our lives happened- and for someone who missed out on the chance to know Yasmin personally - I cried for hours.

This in itself is sappy and melodramatic- a trait more often than not now imbued in our Hari Raya commercials. A trend started by Yasmin herself.

For how can one explain, even now- of the feeling of having fallen in love with someone you have never met?

Yasmin was all that for me. The fact that I was living in KL and was a fan of her work, even to the near-ness of having dated a boy from Subang Jaya thus hung out at her neighbourhood around the time Sepet made her a household name (though my then boyfriend was not Chinese); still haunts me to this day. But The Storyteller made it seem like I know her already.

So I guess, I actually felt, rather than watched her movies and commercials.

Which is also the way I have chosen to write this review.

    Ly's favourite movies by rank:
    1. The one with the kites.
    2. The one with the elephant. (Sadly, this was also a farewell)
    3. The one with the numbers. (I am a geek)

Confession: I didn't warm up to Sepet. But I started reading Tagore.

I only saw Rabun recently, after Amir Muhammad kindly gave me not one, but two copies of the DVD (Both works!! Thanks! :) ). I want Mak Inom and Pak Atan's love.

    Ly's favourite commercial by rank:
    1. The one with Jo Kukathas
    2. The one with the cekodoq!
    3. The one with the dragon boat.

Mine is a tragic love story- for I did not even had the chance to even bump into her in person. You're with love, and you are love, Yasmin. For having taught me that, I thank you.

    Amir, THANK YOU.

It is plainly obvious that this book is a labour of love. It shows. It is Amir Muhammad's tribute to his dear friend and fellow film maker Yasmin Ahmad. And what a tribute it is.

It's as if Amir Muhammad is speaking to you from across the table at a kopitiam/mamak/kedai makan and reminiscing about his dear friend. Primarily, he talks about the films that Yasmin Ahmad made during her lifetime. He will also talk about small, seemingly insignificant details that only a close friend and and insider in the Malaysian indie film community can know. He will tell you about the passion and verve that made Yasmin Ahmad such an unforgettable film maker. He'll make you laugh, think, maybe he'll make you weep a bit.

Even if you haven't seen any of Yasmin Ahmad's movies or (gasp!) you're not a fan, you won't be lost. Amir will guide you, hold your hand if need be and he'll tell you a story of a remarkable woman who was his friend, a remarkable woman who will be missed, even by people who didn't know her.
