In her senior year, Mel Thomas played a key role in UConn winning the Big East regular season and tournament championships and in their run to the NCAA Final Four. Mel finished her career with 1,098 points and ranked fourth in UConn history in three-pointers made with 224. Exposing readers to events surrounding the Huskies trip to the Final Four not open to even the most privileged fans, reporters or boosters, Heart of a Husky also explores relationships between teammates and coaches, team meetings and locker room talks, difficult days of injury, rehab and physical therapy, practical jokes, and travel adventures. It all adds up to a fascinating read for players, parents, coaches and fans and provides an inspiring inside look at a hardworking athlete.

If ever I needed this book to come into my life, this was the perfect time! I am in no way an athlete, well arguably a runner at best, but I work with a team on a daily basis.

This book was not only a good pick me up, but motivating and inspiring at the same time. I am absolutely a sports fan, especially for NCAA women’s basketball, so everything here really resonated with me.

Although I work in academics/higher education, I am a part of a huge team of 20+ and we are in a busy season with a huge end goal. A lot of team work and coordination is required, and right now, some of us are feeling a little lost! I can’t wait to share a piece of this story with my team during our weekly meeting because every team works hard, has a mission, gets tired, and sometimes gives their all and still feel incomplete. Well, “Heart of a Husky” takes you through a whirlwind of emotions from start to finish; it really lays out what it takes to work as a team and accomplish your goal.

Not everyone I work with will take this book the way I do and that’s okay. It resonated with me because I have played team sports and am a very inclusive individual. But if you are a sports fan, it’s a great story.

I loved how Mel includes pics and bios of the players because I found myself flipping back to their pics every time I read a story about them. I also loved hearing stories about the coaching staff, especially Geno Auriemma!

I only wish I knew what Mel Thomas is up to now? It was written 15 years ago and about a basketball season 16 years ago. Is Mel married? Did she stay with Ty-Ty? What happened when she moved to Ireland? I tried googling Mel Thomas and found nothing there and less on social media.

A follow up would be nice. But I’m a gal who loves biographies and non-fiction sports, so this was perfect! 🏀

I loved this book. It couples essentially a back stage pass to one of the most elite sports program in the country with the journey of a kid, starting as a high schooler and right through graduation. You feel the highs and lows of a student, an athlete, daughter, friend, teammate and all the trials, tribulations and uncertainly that goes along with each role.

This isn’t meant to be Crime and Punishment, War & Peace. It’s a raw account of growing up through this program. I also love the way it ends, the uncertainty of what Ms. Thomas’ next chapter in life will be.

    Great book

This is a good read for anyone interested in basketball. Especially women who want to play at the collegiate level. It helps understand everything that goes on and what to expect.

I really liked this book. It gave an inside look at how the world of Women's College Basketball really works. I really liked how it was a player's actual diary from her senior season, she did a great job I felt like I went through all of her highs and lows with her.
