The Incomparable Max. Reviews
-
The writing team of Lawrence and Lee was responsible for many well-known plays and a few not-so-widely performed not (therefor) recognized. Their play about the Scopes Monkey Trial "Inherit the Wind" is doubtless their most performed. They are also widely respected for "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" (1970) and "First Monday in October" 1978). Among their least recognized is "The Incomparable Max" (1971) which is, tenuously, "about" the English theatre critic Max Beerbohm. Lawrence and Lee based their two-act play on two short stories by the protagonist Max Beerbohm himself. All of the non-literary (e.g. newspaper and magazine) reviews on the cover call it a "literary" success but there are no reviews from literary critics. T.E. Kalem wrote, in TIME Magazine (1 Nov 71), that Max would have been bored by Lawrence and Lee's play ... which seems a correct assessment. It ran for 23 performances on Broadway and closed. Much more potentially fun and interesting is an exploration of "The Gang's All Here" (1959) and "Jabberwock (1972), which are both on order from the bibliopole.
