The main bulk of the guide, the "Places" section, consists of district-by-district coverage of the city, illustrated throughout. As well as sightseeing and transport info there are hundreds of smart and critically annotated listings of restaurants, bars, shopping and nightlife, all keyed to accompanying, easy-to-use maps. The language section has a useful menu reader and handy phrases to have you speaking a little French by the time you arrive.

The Rough Guides' Paris Directions 1 (Rough Guide Directions) Reviews

I read this book as a bedtime book, but not for my usual reason, which is that I wasn’t interested enough to read it as a main book. I just wanted it to last a little longer so that I could discover a few new things I wanted to do each evening on the run up to a trip to the City of Lights.

Given that I was pretty much dipping in and out of it while simultaneously practicing my French, it was quite a pleasurable and rewarding little read. I was particularly happy with the guide to the bars and nightlife, because I already had a good idea of the touristy stuff that I wanted to do but I wasn’t sure where would be best to go in the evenings for a little live music.

There’s not too much more to say about this one because there are all sorts of little guides like this out on the market, and any one of them is as good as any other. But considering that I picked this one up super cheap in a charity shop and it was a slightly older edition, I have no complaints. Now bring on Paris, please!
