Reverend Johann Wilhelm Meinhold (1797- 1851) who wrote under the pseudonym Abraham Schweidler, was a German pastor and author. In 1813 he attended the University of Greifswald and then in 1820 he became the rector of the Town School of Usedom. In 1821 he became a pastor of Coserow in Usedom. In the 1840s he claimed to have discovered the manuscript of another minister, Abraham Schweidler, among the rubbish in the choir in the old Coserow Church. This was the story of Mary Schweidler: The Amber Witch (1843) described as "the most interesting trial for witchcraft ever known." His other works include Sidonia Von Bork die Klosterhexe.

I think I finished this out of spite? I started reading about Sidonia because Oscar Wilde read it when he was young and enjoyed it. I can only assume that something got lost in the translation. And honestly, there are passages that aren't translated so that's highly likely. There were just so many instances of needless "but I'll relate more about that soon". And the second volume has so many xenophobic passages. This is not a story that revels in a love for diversity. And then I continued on and read the Amber Witch...again, likely out of spite. I regret the lost time, so to save you...witches have insane powers, people are really hesitant to accuse someone of witchcraft if they are noble born, everybody's horrible, life is hard, witch trials are the worst, but if there's a marriage at the end it's all okay. Oh, and when in doubt, pepper in some Latin and a lot of religious text.
