In some ways I am horrified that I could not put this book down. Somewhat like being drawn to staring at a horrifying traffic accident. And yet, I am amazed by the author's strength, honesty and courage. It was part of a book relay and I will be sending it off!

The lovely bones is a heartfelt story of how a family has to live with the burden of knowing that their daughters/sisters murderer is out there, somewhere, but he is closer than they think. Every day, Jack, Lindsey, Abigail, and Buckley Salmon has to live with the burden of having a tomb in the middle of their house.
While Susie’s family bares the burden of her lost life, Susie bares the burden of having to know the fact that her murderer lives right across the street from her family, and knowing the fact that there is a chance that George Harvey can continue with his homicidal killing pattern, it kills her, and so she tries to give her father and sister clues, in which sometimes they can pick up, however, they still won’t set Susie’s soul free, to let her live in her own perfect world, instead of being left to die in their nightmare. They both try so hard to solve her murder, and when the police give up, they try even harder, they risk their lives to save the life of someone dead.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an open mind, and anyone who can interpret what the characters in this book are feeling, and understand their actions. Also anyone around 13-16 years of age and loves tragic mysteries, this would be a good book for them.
The only thing I wish that could have been better about this book is the fact that Susie could have left a piece of her for her family to hold onto as they grow up. She wants to give them more than her memories, or her wishes, more than her spiritual presence, but less than her real self. However I think that the ending of this book is a very good ending, and it gives a great moral, the to me, the moral of the story is that you don’t know what you had until it was gone, and even though someone you loves dies, they aren’t gone forever, they are alive in their own perfect world, but if you truly love them, you have to let them go. If someone lives, they live, if someone dies, the live in a perfect world, if someone is held onto, they die, drowned by regrets and memories. -
This was a difficult book for me to read. I had to keep putting it down. The content and plot was too much for me. I found it very disturbing.
-
Subject matter can be disturbing at times, well written and very well developed characters. If you are looking for something different, go for it! Quick read, would not suggest this for beach reading.

Already did under another cover for the same novel

I almost feel terrible for enjoying this book, but it was very hard to put down. The book begins in the 1973 with young Suzy Salmon who is lured into an evil trap by the kind of freak that you hear about on "America's Most Wanted". This Mr. Harvey welcomes her into his "secret hideout" that he has made for all the neighborhood kids, and before she knows it, her spirit has left her body and her childhood and innocence have been taken from her. It is now up to her to keep her sister from that same fate...all while in Purgatory. The sheer terror of it all has kept her out of her perfect, self-engineered Heaven, but she can not rest until her sister, Abby, is safe.
The book was frightening in one respect, but the author keeps the account detailed yet tastefully obscure. The whole time you're reading, you are rooting for Heaven's innocent little angel and her family down below. This is a suspenseful, heart-wrenching tale of a dead sister's mission to keep her living sibling alive. It will pull your heart strings as it elaborates on how life drastically changes when a family member has been taken in such tragic circumstances. Alice Sebold pulls off her protagonist's all-seeing perspective in a very eloquent book that raises awareness for the lost lives of the children on the side of milk cartons. -
I really didn't like this as much as everyone else. I thought it was going to be a suspense novel, but it wasn't at all. Didn't even wind up seeing the movie when it came out.
