    Yayyyy reunited!

This one made me happy :) I liked seeing Goku blitz the red ribbon guys and then him tracking down Bulma was just a lot of fun. I really do love when the gang is together.

Lots of adventuring and new devices and things in this issue, and DINOSAURS! WHAT!

    Loved it!

    ONWARD!!

Goku's absolutely clueless shenanigans in a big city are pretty funny to watch, even though you'd think he would have grown out of this phase by now. Didn't Master Roshi educate him as well?

Turns out the Finnish edition had even more censorship than I ever knew. I never realized just how badly it was mangled... but I suppose I should give credit for editing it in such a way as to not be completely obvious.

These Dragon Ball books are like comics meth for me. I’m consuming them ridiculously quickly in single-volume gulps as they come in and I think if I had all of them in a pile, I would lock my door and not emerge until they were all read! I think with Dragon Ball Z I might see if I can grab the entire 26 volume series at once and take some time off to consume them wholesale with no distractions – I know I sound crazy, but I’m quite serious!

In this book, Son Goku is making his way up Muscle Tower, fighting his way through the levels to rescue the mayor being held hostage by the Red Ribbon Army (a Nazi-esque organisation also searching for the Dragon Balls). Along the way Goku meets the comedically arrogant ninja Sergeant Major Purple and the Frankenstein’s Monster lookalike, 8-Man, before setting off to the big city to find Bulma to fix his Dragon Ball tracker.

I loved finding out more about Bulma. She came across as this slutty dimwit before but she’s more nuanced now after finding out who she and her family are really like. Her dad is the inventor of the capsules – those things that instantaneously create houses, cars, etc. – which makes her a billionaire heiress and, along with the vast wealth, she’s inherited that genius intellect, inventing, among other things, Goku’s Dragon Ball tracker.

There are some really funny moments too as we find out her mum and dad are pretty liberal, happy for their daughter to fool around with boys and drink sake, while the usually free-wheeling Bulma is reactively conservative around her folks. “Children don’t drink sake!” she yells at her mum after she brings out a glass for Goku! Then her mum says she’d love to find the Dragon Balls herself and wish for a hunk to sweep her away – the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree after all!

Goku is reunited with more of the original Dragon Ball cast just as the Red Ribbon Army begin to close in on them. Unfortunately this means more of the ridiculously pervy Turtle Master who manages to find a new low of spying on Bulma on the toilet – seriously, does anyone besides Akira Toriyama like this awful character?! But it does mean Goku’s back with his training partner Kuririn, so I’m hoping the two get to do some damage to the Red Ribbon lunatics and we see some more awesome magical fighting.

If you’ve only seen the TV show, you need to read the books – they are much, much better! Volume 6 is another fine entry in the Dragon Ball series. Now I’m off to see my dealer about Volume 7…

This was a blessing. These books are so simple, innocent to read and just bring a smile to my face whenever I read them. Its so good. Here we have Goku fight Sergeant Musasaki that weird ninja, make friends with Android 8 - Hacchan and then fight Buyon some weird monster and then defeat General white ultimately and then continue finding the dragon balls. And he goes back to Bulma and Muten-Roshi to find other dragon balls while the Red Ribbon army is after them. It was just so good and like the sheer simplicity, fun, adventure, humorous moments, epic fights and quirky villains make it a worthwhile read! The art and colors are just gorgeous!

  • Himanshu Karmacharya

Despite the humor and action, the volume felt pretty average compared to its predecessors, probably because of the clichéd and bland villains.

I can't say I like this whole Red Army story arc but they're fun and a silly distraction before introducing more crucial characters to the franchise. It's also fun to see Akira Toriyama explore the freedom of choice, willpower, and happiness through the introduction of androids. It's silly and fun to watch Akira Toriyama make all his old characters little perverts.

    7/10 stars

I liked this one a lot - till Master Roshi showed up and dialed up his usual pervert behaviour all the way to 11. Before that, it was a solid 8/10 read, mostly due to ever-innocent Goku and Bulma, who gets a bit of a backstory here and shows exactly from whom she got her genius, the feeling of entitlement and some other questionable behaviors ;) I'm getting really fed up with Kame-Senin, though - liked him much more hidden beneath his wonderfully ridiculous Jackie Chun persona.

Looking forward to the next one!

In this issue of Dragon Ball, Goku is still in the North fighting his way up to Muscle Tower to rescue the mayor of this small village. He has passed several rounds but now he is fighting a ninja who isn't a strong fighter and portrayed more for comedy relief. Since Goku is stronger thanks to his training with Master Roshi, he is able to reach the top and rescue the Mayor. Goku believed that the Dragon Ball could be in Muscle Tower and was disappointed that he couldn't find it but he was actually right that the Dragon Ball was in Muscle Tower but hidden with someone.

During the course of him rising to the top of the Tower, he meets a robot that looks exactly like the monster in Frankenstein except that he does not like to fight and despise evil people. He found the dragon ball while he was walking around and hide it with him because he didn't want the Red Ribbon Army to have it in their possession and because he saw the goodness in Goku, he was willing to give it to him and unfortunately it wasn't the dragon ball that his grandpa gave to him.

Now that the mission was over, he wants to find the next dragon ball but unfortunately the radar needs a repair and that means that Goku must find Bulma and ask her to repair it. Since Goku has never been to her house, never lived in a city, it is quite difficult to find her but he is persistent in his goals and travels to "The City of the West" and finds her. We learn that she is the daughter of the inventor of the Capsules pills and she is practically a genius when it comes to technology.

She is excited to see him again and shows Goku her latest gadget which is she is able to shrink herself to fit into his pocket. Bulma is bored with school and from city life so she wants to tag along with Goku to help him find the dragon balls. Sadly Goku forgot to mention about the Red Ribbon Army is after him for the dragon balls, and Bulma took the wrong capsule case meaning she has no tools or gadgets to help Goku now that they discovered that the next dragon ball is deep under the ocean floor. Whats ironic is Master Roshi's Island is not far away from where they are so they fly away hoping his master will help him. Will Goku find the dragon ball? Will Bulma have to show her panties to Master Roshi? Will the Red Ribbon Army ruined the day? We won't find out till next time on Dragon Ball.

    Good stuff, like always.
No i spuszczanie łomotu Armii Czerwonej Wstęgi zawsze na propsie :)

    The way that female characters are written is quite something ;-;

  • Blake the Book Eater

With Goku being chased by the Red Ribbon army the story has a real classic adventure feel to it! Find the thing! Escape the bad guys! Lots of fun.

Goku meets Hacchan. Hacchan is a robot. Other people handle a robot terribly, but Goku handle him as a human because he has so gentle heart.
Goku also meets Buluma after a long time. She became riches. Her father makes a great machine. It is useful for finding Dragonballs.

  • Zachary White

Honestly, this has been my favorite so far. It introduced some of my favorite villains while also bringing back some of the old characters introduced in the beginning of the series. It shows when one character is introduced they will stick around for a while.

It also expands the world by showing the city in the west and showing while the world can be bare bones there are also metropolises around as well.

Goku is an eccentric monkey-tailed boy with superhuman strength and boundless energy. His life of peaceful solitude is interrupted one day when he meets Bulma, a feisty young lady on the hunt for mysterious wish-granting orbs known as Dragon Balls. Accompanied by a group of zany companions, the two team up on a grand adventure full of all kinds of intense battles, dangerous villains and whacky hijinks.

Now this was a blast of nostalgia! Dragon Ball was the first anime I ever watched as a dorky little toddler. I remember watching it every week with my big brother. I watched the reruns multiple times and owned all the Budokai and Tenkaichi fighting games. I developed a bit of an unhealthy obsession with Dragon Ball Z throughout my middle school years. While I don't like the series nearly as much as I once did, I'm very thankful toward this series for introducing me to the wonderful world of anime and manga. After Dragon Ball, I watched Ghibli, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket and dozens of others. I then went on to discover some of my all time favorite series like Berserk, Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Gantz, Battle Royale, Attack on Titan, Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal, Parasyte, Goodnight Punpun and more. Dragon Ball made me a fan of this medium and it felt great to re-experience the series from beginning to end for the first time in twenty years.

The story and characters are simple, but the series is easy to read, hilarious and wholesome in spite of the constant action. The series starts off as a raunchy, self-aware slapstick comedy full of fourth-wall breaking, sexual innuendos and surprisingly dirty jokes. This series was definitely edgy for its time considering it was geared towards a young audience. A lot of the perverted humor and gag comedy wouldn't fly too well with modern sensibilities, but it can be pretty funny for people who don't get offended easily and can handle some outdated mannerisms and attitudes from the past.

While the series does start off as a comedy gag reel, it slowly develops into a more serious streamlined plot with better written characters and villains. The story never really blooms into anything worth writing home about, but it remains consistently entertaining and fun to read. The interactions between Goku and his pals is always funny, even the way he plays around with his enemies is comical. If I remember as well as I think I do, I believe the maturity of the story and characters improve much more in the sequel series which I'll eventually get around to reviewing at some point. The original Dragon Ball ends on a great battle sequence that sets up the more serious tone of Dragon Ball Z.

My only major complaint about the overall story is the Dragon Balls make things way too convenient and removes the stakes and consequences of literally everything. If a major character dies they can just be wished back. This removes any sense of drama or tension from the battles and the consequences of the villains actions becomes moot. The series doesn't take itself too seriously and often pokes fun at itself, but the way the Dragon Balls are utilized are just a little too much in my opinion. Even comedies need a certain amount of suspension and stakes to make me care about what's going on.

Wieder einmal beweist der kleine Held Son-Goku, was in ihm steckt.

Ninja Murasaki is unable to defeat Goku so he orders Android #8 to finish. But Android #8 (who looks a lot like Frankenstein) doesn't like fighting or doing bad things and refuses to hurt Goku. Goku defeats the Ninja and after teaming up with Android #8, recused the Village leader that the Red Ribbon Army had held hostage.
Back in the Village Android #8 reveals he's had one of the Dragon Balls the while time and he gives it to Goku. Goku gets ready to continue his quest but realizes his Dragon Radar broke during the fighting.
He jumps on his cloud and goes to Western city where Bulma lives. Bulma fixes the radar and decides to join Goku again. They go to Master Roshis island after her learning that one of the Dragon Balls is in the water near his island.
Unbeknownst to them the Red Ribbon Army is in close pursuit and after realizing that Goku is about to get the next Dragon Ball, the Army attacks them under water and also goes after Master Roshi.

Yay Bulmas back! The translation can get really crappy at times but the illustrations make up for it.

When it comes to a series known for its fast pace, I feel like this volume flew by the quickest out of what I've read so far! We go from that pretty non-stop first encounter with a branch of the Red Ribbon Army right into a reunion with Bulma, and things keep going from there!

Not much to say this time around, but I really am enjoying this far more as an adult getting back into the franchise. I'd had a friend who'd been collecting these volumes as they were released back in the day by the Shonen Jump imprint, and I'd read a volume whenever my friend had finished it. However, I recall that it was around the introduction of the Red Ribbon Army into the storyline that I kind of fell off the wagon and stopped reading. I can't for the life of me understand why, because this is pretty non-stop and still immense fun.

Goku continues to work through Muscle Tower and decimating the Red Ribbon Army. Toriyama's goofy humor is back and I'm just not here for that. Purple is a ninja but a total doofus that Goku makes quick work of. He befriends a metal man he nicknames 8-Man and the two face off against General White. In an act of mercy 8-Man learns what it means to truly be a good guy. It was endearing. But Goku accidentally broke his radar and has to seek Bulma out to fix it and she joins Goku's hunt...until they have to find a submarine to dive under the water...which means a visit to the Invincible Master and Kuririn also joins the party!
It's an interesting arc with decent enough pacing, Goku is still an excellent character to follow and watch grow, but the childish humor is a bit much for me.

  • Nick H

This one is non-stop action! Even though I liked the tournament storyline, the pacing noticeably picked up in this volume. The globetrotting and swashbuckling elements were always my favorite aspect of these comics. This volume had a huge amount of laughs too- in particular, the battle with Ninja Murasaki was really funny. Glad to see Goku teaming up with his old friends again. Can’t wait to see where it goes next.

[Note: This review is for the 5th Kanzenban volume, which isn’t listed on Goodreads. For reference, it begins in Muscle Tower with the Ninja Murasaki battle, and ends when they discover the hidden underwater pirate’s port.]

  • Rangga Sukmawijaya

  • Brandon

Goku makes his way up the tower to face the big bad! We've got androids, and a reunion with the rest of the cast as Goku travels to the oddly futuristic big city that's so different from every small town we've seen so far. Lots of cool fights and tricks to Goku's adventure here, and the return of the larger cast is welcome to give Goku more people to play off of. And because Bulma is a delight and I love our super-science teenager. I love the contrast between the free-spirited immature Goku and his opponents, the Red Ribbon Army with their weapons and vehicles and hierarchy.

  • Meepelous

Even if Son Goku is a Garty Stew, he is pretty well balanced out by the managery of larger than life characters that surround him. Two of my personal favourites, Bulma and 8-man make an appearance alongside some very innocent son Goku nudity again. Toriyama is becoming a pretty special man in my life.

  • Travis

Goku's quest to recover his grandpa's Dragon Ball hits a snag when he discovers that the Red Ribbon Army is searching for them as well. This volume is very action packed as well but we get back into heavy comedy bits. Don't get me wrong I love Dragon Ball because of its humor but not when it is hitting me in the face like a ton of books!

    124/125 (Revised 2018 Reading Challenge)

Another great volume. Finishes Goku climbing the tower & his quest for the dragonballs vs the red ribbon army. & he reunites with some friends. Seeing Goku navigate a city was funny & shrinking machine antics. That great combo of action & Humor that Dragonball manages to pull off.
