Fairy Tail, Vol. 10 (Fairy Tail, #10) Reviews
-
I think I actually like this story line done in the manga more than in the anime. You get to start learning a bit more about where Erza came from before joining Fairy Tail!
-
I love this chapter because it reminded me of when I was a baby I thought I had magic powers

...did you know one of the characters in this series can take a bullet in the head and *survive*? (spoiler: it's Natsu) I didn't, but Hiro Mashima's writing is as random as ever, so I'm not surprised.
Volume 10 begins with the regular crowd going on a short vacation and having fun at the seaside - until they get interrupted by Erza's tragic past. In short, a bunch of weird, quirky characters who talk funny show up, Erza gets captured and kidnapped, Natsu gets a gun fired in his mouth, and some people get trapped in playing cards.
I wonder if the people trapped in cards were meant to be a plot point, but Hiro Mashima forgot about them; I wonder if there are any minor characters in this series who aren't impossibly quirky; I wonder if there's anything that can actually hurt Natsu in any way.
For example, this guy is a "square" obsessed with being a dandy:
There's also a woman obsessed with cats. And Juvia the quirky water mage is still obsessing over Gray.
So, Erza gets bombarded by flashbacks from her past, when she was a child slave working for a black magic cult which wanted to build a tower (that's common black magic cult behavior, I'm sure). Along with her friends, she started a slave rebellion to save Jellal, another friend who had been taken away to be beaten and tortured - but when they won, she found him deeply changed and eeeevil. Worse, he'd been converted to cult-of-doom-ism and, in the years since the slave rebellion, he's built that tower and wants to unleash some sort of death god on the world.
Dun-dun-dun, how will this be continued? -
Erzas story is so freaking dark, man.
Also loml Jellal I see u ilysm -
This one's centered on Ezra, now and as a youngster. Darker volume than usual. Still shows some deficiencies in plot handling by Mashima I don't expect to see improve anytime soon.

Idk what it was but even though I was really excited to learn more about Erza’s backstory, it didn’t wow as much as other volumes. I do really appreciate the introduction of religion into this magic world and the consequences of dark magic and forbidden magic. I’m also curious to see more of Juvia and how that will play out. Her crush on Gray is the funniest thing. -
Hmmm I hope Jellal becomes good...
-
Erza’s back story always breaks my heart.

Chapters 75-82
Ooooh this arc! Actually what I love so much about it is the fact that there's so much back story about Erza's character, who is by far one of the weirdest but strongest and coolest mage here!Devoured this volume ;) -

"There is no God. Even if there was, a God who can't save one little kid doesn't deserve to exist!"
Never would I have imagined Jellal's words to ring true to my ears. And yet, when I read this dialogue muttered by him, I couldn't help but shiver. For those who are not aware, Jellal is a major antagonist of Erza's life. Once upon a time, they were best friends. It is possible they even loved each other (although, I haven't read the manga enough or watched the show enough to know that).
This volume began with our strongest team having completed a task early and then resorting to having some fun of their own. But hey, you can never have fun if you're dragon slayer, an ice wizard, a flying cat, a celestial spirit wizard (or the heir to one of the most prestigious estates) or just Erza Scarlet. Yep, if you're any of these, you can never get any enjoyment time. And that is just what happens when the lot goes into a casino and is ambushed by a rather funny group of people with strange magic and weird obsessions.
In the tenth installment of the Fairy Tail manga, we meet people from Erza's past and find out more about her time from before Fairy Tail, how she stumbled upon her magic and what kind of a life did she lead back then. We also meet Jellal, the original Jellal this time round and we find out how he was before he turned into... Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves here.
I liked the art in this one despite its many fighting scenes. Strangely, they kept the book alive for me. It bothered me that the team cannot have one moment of peace to one's self, but I guess if they did, then it would make the book boring for me. After all, what will I do with Lucy just sitting in her room talking to Plue?
Yet, the best part about this volume was the official introduction of Zeref. Not through Lullaby or Deliora but through words and acts (although, we had no idea Deliora was Zeref's creature until much later). It horrified me to think that there would be people who would want to revive such a dark power, but I guess that is what happens every time there is a "Dark Lord". -
4/5 Volume 10 starts with a couple of small break chapters before diving head first into the Tower of Heaven Arc. Not too many large fights this time around but we are given a lot of Erza’s back story and introduced to a large cast of antagonists that she grew up with. We also get to see more Juvia and I love her dynamic with Gray. It is hilarious.
I’m a couple arcs away from catching up to where I left off with the anime. So far I’m going strong and having fun. 10 down 53 to go.
Our team wearing a sharp red ensemble looking pretty dapper on the cover of volume 10. -
With Lucy now having a new celestial spirit with her, she and the guild go on a surprise resort vacation. However, the enjoyment is cut short when Erza is suddenly kidnapped and it turns into a more personal situation when she’s brought to her old friends and learns that one of them is still stuck in the past. We get to learn about Erza and her old friends’ past as orphan slaves determined to escape their broken lives. A (100%/Outstanding)

Now we begin with one of my favorite Fairy Tail arcs... "The Tower of Heaven" arc where Erza must face up to her past a slave for a demonic cult group who wanted to resurrect the black wizard, Zeref. Although I adore Lucy and she is my favorite, Erza is a very close second because of how much she had to overcome not just within this arc but in the whole series. Now let's continue on!
-
Erza's backstory is the best. I want more Jellal moments please !
-
Now the promised Erza backstory. The beginnings of who she is and where she came from. This is a very sad beginning to a story and we start the new arc.
-
Increíble... el arco de Jeral hasta el momento me pareció fantástico. Hermosa metáfora de Erza con su armadura, y peleas perfectas.
-
No me interesa Ezra la verdad

amazing
-
This volume talks heavily about freedom and hate. Also we get to know erza's past.
Stars: ★★★★ -
We can know a past of Erza in this story, and we also understand why she can use a sword magic. Erza is one of my best character but she often tries to resolve problems by herself so I am worried about her. I want to know her more deeply.
-
I wanted to start my reading for the year with a bang so I knew reading the next volume of Fairy Tail would do the trick! Erza is such a strong character and I liked learning about her back story. On to the next volume!

This volume picks up after the events of Volume 9 when Natsu, Happy and Gray make a most interesting discovery about one of their own who is actually bound to Lucy as a Celestial Spirit, the handsome playboy that is Loke is more than happy to serve Lucy. He even hands her passes to an exclusive and expensive beach resort so all of them can enjoy some vacation time after such a difficult mission that included Erza Scarlet.
It’s great to see the Lucy’s team having some fun for a change and they have a blast on the beach. In the evening, they all decide to meet in the resort’s casino where Gray encounters Juvia from the now disbanded wizard group called Phantom. Since she has a major crush on the wild wizard, she tells him she now wants to join Fairy Tail … most likely just to be close to him.
Unfortunately, a most odd-looking fellow who looks like a gangster thug made of LEGO shoves a gun down Natsu’s throat while another thug appears at the blackjack table as a replacement dealer and reveals himself to Erza. Meanwhile, Gray and Juvia are attacked by a much bigger foe and just before Lucy could make her move she is tied up by a cat-like girl. Just about the only person who recognizes these four attackers is Erza who the man named Sho calls “Big Sis.”
With the other Fairy Tail members out of the way, Erza is taken captive by this group and is whisked away. Lucy discovers that the rope that is tied around her is magical but help comes in the form of the resort’s visitors that – during the attack – have been imprisoned in playing cards. One of them is able to cut through Lucy’s ropes and she gathers her friends together to begin a pursuit to save their comrade as well as Happy who was kidnapped and given to the cat-girl named Millianna as a gift.
As it turns out, all four know Erza from her carefully guarded past and all four consider her a traitor for having not only betraying their leader named Jellal but also leaving them. It seems this Jellal has finally built the massive tower known as the Tower of Heaven just as he promised and now Erza is to become the sacrificial lamb in a ritual connected to the tower that is capable of making an impossible feat possible. Of course, in order for it to work, a person must die and Erza is the one chosen for this task.
While Lucy and the others reach the Tower of Heaven, Erza’s past is revealed to us as Erza opens up in a way that is so unlike this fierce warrior-wizard. You see, Erza grew up a slave to a religious group that forced men, women and children to build the Tower of Heaven for the purpose of resurrecting a dead deity. Unfortunately, beatings were an everyday occurrence even for child slaves like Erza and her young friends that include Sho, Millianna and a boy named Jellal.
One day, an escape attempt by the children resulted in Erza getting punished and when Jellal rescued her only to get captured in the process, this event awoke a rebellion led by Erza. Sadly, something happened in Jellal’s cell that changed everything and when freedom was one the confrontation between Erza and Jellal didn’t end well. In the end, Jellal ended up taking up the mission to finish the Tower of Heaven and seeing Erza’s refusal to help as an act of betrayal.
Now, Erza is faced to find Jellal and put an end to his plan that is seen a dangerous by a council that sees the Tower of Heaven a threat to all the world. In the wrong hands, it becomes a weapon of mass destruction. Oh yeah, you can bet things are going to get interesting and heartbreakingly awful for Erza.
It’s good to see a dramatic storyline in this series and Mashima-sensei doesn’t get too carried away that he loses the humor he injects in every volume. Thankfully, there are bonus manga stories as well such as one story that has Lucy thinking that maybe Natsu is romantically interested in her. It’s downright hilarious.
In its tenth volume, Fairy Tail spins a deeply touching tale that makes this a story arc that isn’t just about madcap action and the usual wizardry antics. Then again, the series has progressively become a fun, exciting and well written and Volume 10 is a good example of how Mashima-sensei is more than capable of balancing drama with his brand of humor. The next volumes promise to be very interesting as Erza faces the demons in her past. Considered us hooked on this manga series now.
MANGA REVIEW BREAKDOWN
STORY: A
After obtaining free passes to a beachside resort, Lucy and her fellow Fairy Tail cohorts that include Erza Scarlet. Unfortunately, their fun in the sun and a nice night at the casino becomes a bitter walk down memory lane for Erza who becomes the target of powerful magic-users who know her tragic past well. Taken captive, Lucy, Natsu, Gray and Juvia stage a rescue as their friend’s past is revealed.
ART: A+
Hiro Mashima’s art has strayed a little from One Piece manga-ka Eiichiro Oda’s influence and developed a style of his own and that’s a very good thing since he‘s really talented. You just have to love his character design and the action in the manga looks really good.
OVERALL: A
Volume 10 of Fairy Tail shows that the series just keeps getting better with each volume and with more emphasis on character development it is hard to ignore how entertaining this series is becoming to the point of rivaling Rave Master. We definitely cannot wait for Volume 11. -
I don't remember loving this arc very much. I mean I remember being glad that I got to meet Jellal, and that we got to learn more about Erza's backstory, but watching it had me yawning -- reading it is very, very different. It's the shit, I love it. Also... awaited beach episode arrives.

This will be my full review for this entire series. I already read this comic from volume 1-30. Suppose there 50 volume more of this series but I prefer not to finish it as I don't really like the time-skip idea in this series.
To clarify, I love the idea of time-skip. But, in this series, I really hate it. It make Natsu and other main member weaker. Why make them weaker? I want to see MC progress throughout the series. Then, suddenly become weaker. Not to mention when MC want to win each battle, power of friendship keep coming back each battle.
Furthermore, there are a lot of un-explained things happened in this series. The dots are not connected rather than scattered throughout the series. It just there to fill the plot-hole. Rather than explaining, Mr Hiro keep continuing the series and keep adding new characters each volume.
So, after the time-skip, I determine to stop reading this series. I don't want to ruin my memories of this awesome series. For most part, this series actually had huge potential because of interesting and lovable character, but the plot is keep on damaging this series slowly. -
The focus shifts to Erza as the gang enjoys a much-deserved vacation. The vacation is spoiled by the arrival of people from Erza's past who want to kidnap her. She grew up as a slave working on the Tower of Heaven, an R-system intended to resurrect a god who is fueled by hate. Erza's backstory is told in flashbacks as the gang is drawn toward the island where the tower is located.
This story has a lot more drama than comedy. There's still plenty of fighting. The drama is especially tough as children get tortured for rebelling against their enslavement. The story is unresolved by the end, so who knows if a happy ending is in store? The usual notes are at the end of the book, along with a bonus story that's very light, like a filler episode of the anime.
I've slowed down my anime watching so now I am in sync with the manga. I will get the next manga before I watch another episode just to see how that is.
Highly recommended. -
Nice background for Erza!
World: The art is great, this is just a good looking book when the fists fly. The world building is really strong also, with new pieces and machinations and a large large dose of world building through character.
Story: Solid story that starts the next battle arc. I love that it’s character based it’s Erza being the focus. We had the last book with Lucy and this one with Erza, having them in the spotlight is nice. The villain is kinda interesting too and the idea behind the tower also solid.
Characters: Strong arc for Erza, finally more depth for the female characters. I kinda feel bad for Juvia as a character though. The villain is interesting which is nice.
Solid.
Onward to the next book!
