Review for volume 1:

The mysteries with the entities known as 'demons' continue...
(1)I like how the author explained and expanded the demon mythology by mixing the traditional demon myth with her own explanation.
(2) the interaction among the characters is cute too!
(3) So...demons aren't the biggest threat, in the end, the baddios are humans...
(4) I like the image of the demons in this series, they can be frightening, but the high-ranking demons are usually gorgeous.
(5) another high-ranking demon, Phoneix shows up! What will happen next? -
I have to read the 2nd volume online coz the printed version is hard to find anymore. SPLENDID. Oh Gosh. Natsumi Itsuki is so genius. Who could think the concept of making a wild 666 Beast into a sexy and loyal pet? Still, this series could hold themselves to be safe for younger readers. I LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! I wanna make series like these. I just have to think about some cool concepts... urgh
Anyway... it seems Japanese writers take "issue from The Other Side" seriously. I wonder how could they know so much about "The Other Side". It's merely fiction I know. But some parts are fit with some elements in my faith. So how? Were they really inspired by "The Other Side"? Do "The Other Side" also make some effort so their existences will be known by humans like us? -
Mona has named the demonic Keita lookalike K2 - a play on Keita's name, and the final step to making her control of him complete, as his chain. Like a petulant child, the strong yet immature demon rebels at the injunction that he cannot go out, throwing tantrums. Mona and Shinobu feel compelled to explain to him why that is - because he looks just like the most familiar face in Japan, and would be instantly spotted, as we begin volume 2 of Demon Sacred.
An annoyed Shinobu brings K2 some games with which to occupy his time. As thanks, K2 promises not to eat him after the other two (Rina and Mona) die off. Shinobu and Mona are used to moving around every so often, so that others don't notice the regressions in Rina. They speculate about the next time maybe going to a tropical island somewhere, where they can live in peace. But Shinobu hopes that won't be necessary, that he can find a way to cure Rina, before SMIC, and Helmut learn about them. Between the three of them, they devise a plan so that someone will be with K2 at all times; he isn't ready to be left alone quite yet.
At school, Mona is surprised to learn from her friend Yuka that their friend Maiko is moving! Yuka found out from her mother that Maiko's dad died on a recent business trip - he developed Return Syndrome and disappeared! Since it is not uncommon for the families of afflcted people to be taken away, Maiko's family is making a pre-emptive move and going away. Mona wants to see her friend before she goes, especially as she knows that Return Syndrome is not only not contagious, it is caused by contact with a demon. Yuka wishes she could go too, but her mother won't allow it. Maiko is overjoyed to see Mona, as everyone else is shunning them, especially when she realizes how supportive she is. Mona promises to visit her in the future. As they walk near Maiko's home, they are approached by three grown men with mischief on their mind. The girls try to get away, but they are caught. Luckily, back at the apartment, K2 hears the distress call of his chain, and without hesitation, he flies out the window to her rescue.
Afterwards, Mona convinces her friend that K2 is a shaolin master. She buys him sunglasses, admonishes him to always wear them if he goes out, and to learn shaolin. Shinobu is not pleased when he learns from Rina and Mika that K2 flew out of the apartment, but he realizes that K2 is necessary, for Rina's sake, so he reassures her that everything will be okay. When Mona and K2 return, he expects the worst, and is glad it wasn't any worse than it was. In the meantime, one of Mona's would-be attackers is telling his wild tale to the police, about a man who fell from the sky and had the strength of a gorilla. And looks just like teen idol Keito Fujina!
Keito's agent, Natori, pooh-poohs the idea that her client was involved, and gives him an alibi - he was giving a concert in Osaka at the time. After talking to the police, she destroys her phone in a rage. When Keito arrives, she tells him about a big contract she is lining up for him with the NHK, but he says he'd like to turn it down, for a film he's interested in doing. This sets the manager off even more! Behind Keito's back, she decides he needs to relax, get his head straight, maybe enjoy the company of a nice young girl. She gets a call from her friend Hanzawa, whom she gave the tickets for Keito's last concert - and then Natori has an idea, arranging for Mona and Rina to meet with Keito! It seems like a great idea to her.
Mona is elated at the idea of meeting her idol, and Shinobu persuades Rina that it's okay for her to go too. She is self-conscious of her looks, which are of course symptomatic of her syndrome. One problem - K2 wants to go too! They tell him that it's impossible. Shinobu knows that K2 went out without permission. He says it was just to get snacks (although he doesn't really need human food, he likes the taste). K2 wants to get a job so he can earn money for snacks himself, but they tell him no. Mika won't be there when they go to see Keito. Since he took a little of K2's aura, he is strong enough now to go hunting on his own, so he does. As soon as steps out of the apartment building, he realizes that the intelligences are everywhere now, just before he is attacked. . .
The next day Mona and Rina go to see Keito. K2 is asleep, so they don't disturb him, figuring that he'll be like Mika and maybe sleep for a week. But he doesn't. And the photo shoot with the pop star that they are there to witness doesn't exactly go according to plan, either.

I am just not clicking with this manga! Quick recap: Mona and Rena are twins who’s mother died and Rena is suffering from deadly illness, known as Return Syndrome, that is sweeping the world with no known origin or cause. This means that she is ageing in reverse until she will eventually disappear. But they know something that the majority of humanity don’t, Return Syndrome is caused by touching a Demon. In volume two, the plot thickens as everyone meets the teen idol Keito, who just so happens to look like a certain character, and Mika discovers an unexpected discovery about the Demons with could explain why the cases of Return Syndrome has drastically increased. There is definitely some interesting developments going on but I’m struggling to connect with the plot. I think the reason for this is the characters…they all have no personality. They are all very two dimensional (pun intended) with K2 being the only character that’s remotely interesting. Bit of a letdown but not the worse. I still have two more volumes that I got from the library so here’s to hoping!

Natsumi Itsuki, Demon Sacred, vol. 2 (Tokyopop, 2003)
NOTE: This review necessarily contains plot spoilers for earlier volumes in the series.
Having one demon around the house wasn't enough? Now Mona needs to chain a demon of her own—and a much stronger one, no less, the Beast of the Apocalypse (the second-strongest demon in the universe, we are told). He's not overly thrilled with having taken on human form—much less the form of a Jpop singer—but the discovery of his insatiable sweet tooth leads to Mona finding a quick way to bargain with him. Meanwhile, SMIC, the company Shinobi does research for, is about to unveil a new initiative they're calling X-Day, and Helmut Rindelts, SMIC's mysterious leader, seems to want Shinobi at the center of it...but what IS it? I'm still not quite sure the series has found its way yet, but there are more than enough intriguing ideas behind it to keep me going into the third volume. *** -
Natsumi Itsuki has quite a varied approach to manga, although her art remains quite similar. This is one of the more cracky shoujo ones with lots of bishoujo and especially bishounen. For some reason Kaori Yuki's manga, while also pretty, tend to let me down in the end and Reiko Shimizu is just too weird for my taste, but this one seems right up my alley.
Extradimensionals in contact with humans who perceive them as various demons: unicorns, dragons, griffins, oni, the beast of the apocalypse - and there are so many of them now that people are dying of a disease they get from contact with them: they age backwards rapidly and vanish.
The two demons trying to help a couple of 14-year-old twins are based on their mother's favourite musician and the girls current favourite musician. It's just shoujo crack ^^, mixed with angst. -
Very fun, addictive, sure my teens my love it. ROCK STARS & UNICORNS - what else do you need?
