I'd heard mention of this magazine for years before buying this collection in Tower Books back in the 90s. But so far, I've only read the first volume. The best way to describe the contents of this collection is to say "corsets, heels, bondage, repeat". There's no questioning the historical importance of this collection of the pre-internet fetish magazine but it got a bit boring reading about the same stuff month after month.
I had a hard time believing the editor's claim that the readers' letters were not made up since they all seemed to have been written in the same "voice".
On the plus side, the collection included reprints of John Willie's original artwork which has endured over the last 50+ years.
However, it will be a while before I bother to read the second volume. -
An incredible artificat of human sexual history. This collection lets us look back on the diverse world of human sexual expression at a time when such expression was often brutally oppressed. As well as being titilating, silly, and fun, these reprints also throw up - to my mind - incredibly interesting and highly romantic accounts of people who were lucky enough to find each other and their jigsaw-piece desires matching, in a world that actively acted against such fulfilment.

A fascinating look at vintage fetish wear and culture. Probably a little subtle for much of today's readers.

this a collection of the prototypical bondage magazine from the late 40s. taschen has really done a service reprinting them.
what did i learn?
first, beware anyone who gives you this for christmas.
second. the graphic design and layouts are stunning. willie seemed to create an iconic image every other page.
however, the writing is just uncomfortably bad. -
I'll tell you what's bizarre, owning some reprinted 1940s BDSM erotica that used to belong to your best friend's dead father.
What can I say.
Lovely Taschen reprint and if you thought those really high heeled fetishy shoes with no actual heel were a modern invention, you'd be wrong.
The four stars are for the pictures to be fair, the writing's not great. -
I'm thrilled that this was reprinted. I've always had a love of vintage erotica, and this is a wonderful collection celebrating bondage.
