Alex and Lulu: Two of a Kind Reviews

  • Michael

Beautifully rendered book about two friends who discover they can still be friends even though they're so different. Great message, nicely executed.

  • Anna

This book was cute with lovely illustrations. It's a cute story about friendship and how it's okay to like different things than your friend.

    [SPOILERS AHEAD]

It's about two best friends, a dog and a cat. They are different, but not quite the opposites. The dog was worrying they couldn't be friends because they're so different, but then the cat reminded the dog why they work well together as friends.

"It's ok to ve different, Alex. We just like doing different things. That doesn't mean we're opposites."

  • Katrina

Alex and Lulu are best friends. That’s because they like a lot of the same things: running, jumping, and swinging at the park. But there are ways in which the duo differ, and when Lulu notes—“We are just SO different”—Alex begins to worry. He wants to play ship’s captain, and she wants to paint. Alex confronts Lulu with the news that they might be dreaded opposites, but she calmly tells him she doesn’t think so. Opposites are things like big and small, wet and dry, slow and fast. Alex and Lulu may be different, but they are “together.” There are many books about friends who don’t see eye to eye, but this one is notable both for the clarity of its message and for the delightfulness of its art. In simple language (and with the added bonus of a lesson in opposites), this cat girl, Lulu, and dog boy, Alex, capture the essence of friendship and find the ways differences can enhance compatibility. (In the last spread Lulu is painting the cardboard boat that Alex is piloting.) This is also a particularly attractive piece of bookmaking. Alex and Lulu frolic on hefty pages against backgrounds of saturated color. Simple geometric shapes, bright colors, and bits of collage invite little ones into a safe, yet expansive world.

Alex and Lulu by Lorena Siminovich is the story of best friends. Alex is a noisy, adventurous dog and Lulu is an artistic, thoughtful cat. One day Lulu begins to doubt their long standing friendship. It's up to Alex to convince her that they can be different and still be friends.

The book is presented as a colorful book of opposites with the plot of friendship holding the book together. Harriet liked the opposites part of the story and she liked the cute dog and the equally cute cat.

Lulu's concern though went right over her head. Her reaction to that part of the story was one of confusion. "Of course they are different! I'm different from my friends. Everyone is different. What is she worrying about?" she explained.

I like the illustrations in this book. The story...well I really liked it! It is about being different, but being the same, and finding common ground!!

"I like sailing on the high seas," Says Alex "But you like being a famous artist so...you can paint our boat" "It's a deal" Says Lulu. "Sometimes it's because we're so different that we have the most fun when we're... Together!"

    Cute Book!

This would be most appropriate for preschoolers. Its about two friends (boy and girl) who play together all the time but they like different things. One friend becomes scared that because they do not like all the same things they will not be friends. Touches on opposites. Cover and pages are thick and matte with beautiful illustrations.

Alex and Lulu are best friends, but Alex worries that their differences will ruin their friendship. Lulu finds Alex and reassures him that their differences do not matter as much as the fun they have together.

Great book on friendship and the ability to be different from our friends. The delightful illustrations drew me to this book.

  • Library Quine

Alex and Lulu are different like 'chalk and cheese', but are still best friends. Alex worries that they are too different to be best friends, but Lulu shows him that it's because they are so different that they have so much fun together. The story seems to overanalyse the friendship between the two animals and I'm not sure what audience would appreciate this story.

  • Edna

Honestly many young children who are different genders and have different interests really don't feel like they have to understand why they're friends with someone. This book perplexed me - felt it over-analyzed relationships.

  • Nancy Jo Lambert

This is perfectly lovely book about being different and still being friends. I really like that this book is well written despite the fact there is an obvious message. I would totally use this book with kids in the library or in the classroom. A wonderful book!

  • LINDA

Adorable story of two friends that don't have a lot of interests in common, but their bond of friendship is so strong that they realize that their differences make their friendship more interesting!

  • Julie

Alex and Lulu are different. Are they too different, or just different enough? It's a hart-warming kids book with a moral, I'll let you figure out which it is.

I will be interested in this for my children if they go through a contentious, we-are-nothing-alike phase.

  • Maggie

    Very cute!

  • Zack

Cute book and wonderful for showing the concept of opposites. Simple and engaging illustrations. My only complaint is I don't think the binding will hold up long with library use.

  • N

The story is meh, but the illustrations are most cute.

  • Marge

two animals even though they like to do different things they can still be friends

  • Lucia

Good book for friendship and opposites.

  • Destinee

Alex begins to doubt his friendship with Lulu because they like different things, but she reassures him.

I like the clear, bold illustrations, but the text is a little too didactic.

  • Stephanie Wycihowski

Fun story about the similarities and differences of being best Friends!

  • Nichole

Would pair well with Oliver Jeffer's book, Up and Down. It explores the differences between friends.

Loved it for its simplicity, great friendship book!

  • Linda

This is a cute story with a good message that your friends don't have to be just like you to be your friend. :) I especially enjoyed the illustrations. Really cute and patterns and art. :)
