In life she refused to use her unique ability to see whether a soul ascends to Heaven or descends into Hell. Now, as a guide through the Passage between the living and the dead, she steers departing souls to Purgatory. But peace is hard to come by, even in the afterlife. Good and evil are fighting for control over the Passage--and Nina is determined not to let Hell take over.
Roman breaks the dead guy rules.
With his devilish charm and angelic looks, the newly-dead Roman can rally souls to fight--but on which side? His new Soul Retrieval Unit sounds like a good idea, but even in death, temptation lures Nina farther from salvation . . . or is she choosing Heaven by placing her soul in her lover's care?

Sweet Christmas, this book is a mess.
Roman Barrymore is head of super-sekrit organization, Sanctus. Never heard of it? That's just how secret it is. He's so great that they call him "The Saint," like you might call an amazingly good chef "The Cannonball" or an amazingly good teacher "The Hun," which is to say, a nickname that sounds awesome, and makes no sense. Also he's dead.
Nina de Lacey is a woman with an unusual gift; she can see souls. Less of a gift, and more of a curse, because skin to skin contact is overwhelming with her gift, meaning she can't take a lover. Except, she can't see the souls of Gray Talbot, her guardian, or Damian Hart, so in the end, she takes them both as lovers. Also, they're all dead, and have been for two hundred years.
Got all that?
There's more!
So Nina's been chilling in the afterlife, with Gray and Damian, when along comes a demon, obscures her memory, and forces her into the body of Katie McGuire, where, confused, she "crowds" her, stealing Katie's life-force, and influencing her with her thoughts.
But wait, there's more!
Then Roman dies, suddenly, (a risk in his line of work) and is presented with a choice by an angel; pass on to heaven, or stay in the less-awesome afterlife and help fight the battle of heaven against hell. But to do that, he needs to retrieve Nina. And to do that, he needs Gray and Damien on his side.
And that is where the book starts.
The first half of the book concerns their attempts to get Nina out of Katie, a two-pronged approach that involves choreographing a romance for Katie, and having Gray and Roman whisper memories of sexytiemes they shared into Nina/Katie's subconscious. For some reason, this works!
Nina retrieved, they go on to thwart hell's diabolical plan, which involves, I shit you not, getting lots of people to hold hands. Nina and Roman must fight their attraction (did I tell you they were attracted? They're attracted. I can't say why, though, the book pretty much asks you to take it on faith) because when dead souls touch, they leak into each other. (Also maybe sexytiems will send them to hell? It's unclear.) Except, it turns out that this leakage is the sexy kind of leakage. (Well, the book tells you so, but you pretty much have to take it on faith.)
In the end, it turns out that what they needed to do was call on the angels to rout the demons. Did you catch that? An angel stopped Roman from going to heaven, so he could call Nina, so she could call an angel. I guess they aren't kidding about the mysterious ways.
And then Roman and Nina hook up, and stop worrying about leakage, (I know, I'm starting to sound like a diaper ad to myself, too) and Gray and Damian are like "Whatever, we were getting tired of Nina anyway, but didn't want to sound rude, so you two crazy kids be happy!"
I only finished this book out of aggravation. -
Erg leuk begin maar het einde was voor mijn idee een beetje gerushed

This book got a lot of bad reviews, my guess is thats because the paranormal plot line was more dominant than the romance.
Overall I thought the book was alright. I could have lived without the erotic memories, the book would have been better without them.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP. -
I had reservations about this book after reading the short story prequel in Midnight Magic. I made it to page 110. I find this book somewhat confusing in a couple of ways - trying to keep up with who was where…in the living world or “the passage” or somewhere else in the land of dead souls. And how newly dead characters can or cannot use the abilities they shouldn’t have until they’ve been in “the passage” awhile. Also annoying how everyone is being so evasive with each other. Overall it was just not holding my attention as I feared. The short story in Midnight Magic dragged but it was mostly a ho-hum type read. I managed to finish it but then again it wasn’t 340 pages. Had I not read that story though, I would have been totally lost in starting this book. I’m not impressed enough with this author to try anymore of her works. I will say, the cover art on this book is great.

Not what it says on the cover really. The story starts with Roman's death. He's given a choice of heaven or working to save the world against demons. He chooses to save the world and gathers a team to help. One of that team is Nina, currently overshadowing another person, she will end up in hell if she continues as she is and he has to try to convince her to leave the person she has inhabited and help him with his mission.
It's pretty predictable, but not what I expected from the blurb. It's more about Roman and his coming to terms with death and his mission. I liked the story but found it lacking in some ways, it was readable but I had no impulse to go looking for more in this world. -
It really wasn't as bad as all the reviews say. Despite the somewhat 'grandma romance' scenes in the book, I really enjoyed learning about this other dimension, known as the Passage. It did get kind of boring once they finally got Nina. But the end did pick up with a race against the clock. Worth a read.

An interesting plot idea suffers from a monotonous telling that sometimes felt like a chore to read.
Roman is a great character and his parts of the story where what helped me get thru the (at times) heavy handed drama of Nina's story.
Characters get introduced left and right but never really developed enough for the reader to feel enough of a connection to care about what happens with them. -
I have alot of books to read. When a book doesn't grab me I move on. This book didn't really est. anything the first few pages. Characters, setting. Nothing. I am not sure what the author was going for or what the author is used to writing for her fans, but I didn't go for it.

The storyline could kinda work. The problem for me was that the book was labelled as a paranormal romance. This , i think, isn't true. Not much in the line of romance. Also, i didn't like the ending. It builds up and just goes splat...

I kept waiting for something to start happening, and I was halfway through and still waiting. Phooey.

Not much clicked for me in this book. It's a paranormal romance with very little in the way of romance. I guess I felt like there was a lot going on and it was confusing.
