Sometimes, pure evil is baked with love.

No-nonsense octogenarian Ida Mae Turnbull is the head judge of Happy Hollow's annual charity baking competition. The prestigious event has been the town's pride and joy for more than a hundred years—until his year. This year, something dark, something evil, something hungry, lurks in the cherry pie, and Ida Mae will face a terror unlike any humanity has ever seen. Because sometimes, pure evil is baked with love. Because sometimes, good grannies go bad, and some bakers will do anything to win.

    “Sometimes good grannies go bad.”

Silly horror comedy, but entertaining nonetheless. And at 29 pages it's a quick, fun read.

    A tasty horror comedy treat

I love DM’s stories, and this met all my expectations. Great characters in a hilarious situation, with plenty of action and monstery shenanigans mixed in with the laughs. Definitely a fun read, especially during Spooky Season!

Trust D.M. Guay to find a way to turn one of the most low key (dare I say, boring?) events in small town America into a hilarious and exciting romp with the supernatural. The event in question is the judging of the annual pie-baking contest which from the very first sentence Guay imbues with interest and excitement that I never suspected could be found in such an event. But here you have it—the pies are biting back this year which makes the judging unique to my experience.

The lead judge, however, continues to embrace her responsibilities with a solemn dignity one would expect to find on the Supreme Court. It’s that unflappableness that makes her such a wonderful character. She’s not oblivious to what’s happening but she’s simply determined not to let that drive her to undignified action. You can’t help but love the old woman.

It’s a quick read with a huge surprise (even bigger than the cherry biting back) so if you like a little dark humor in your stories, you should definitely give this one a try.

HILARIOUS! A triumph for believers of small-town connections to the demons of all netherworlds! What a great way to tie-in rich characters than a bake-sale competition!

D.M.Guay remains the master of funny urban fantasy and horror! Read ALL her books! Do it now mortals before the great redeemer cleanses this world of vegans and people who don't wear good shoes to church on Sunday! Now pass me a slice of that pie, would you? No, not the one with the teeth and tentacles, the other please.

(no date added in order not to misrepresent my yearly reading goals/totals. The rating is real though!)

    OMG

If you have ever talked with me (or follow my Twitter) it's no secret I love Guay's work! This short keeps you on edge and runs smooth. The cover is fun, the writing is amazing, and the characters feel real.

That being said I wish the end was different, but that adds to the joy of the book. I can't get enough of Guay's work and always look forward to her next story.

Think about a cooking show on Food Network made by John Waters and Frank Hennenlotter and this is what you’ll get. DM Guay fills this cupcake of a read with satire, monsters, and ooey gooey. I had a blast reading it and I think this is a great jumping on point to get a taste of the recipes Guay puts together. Puns are done. K thx.

    Well... That was different.

This short story is a quick firework filled train wreck through the brain. I'm pretty sure my face is still stuck in the wtf expression I had reading the end... But none of this is a bad thing.

Excellent story, well written and very funny. Hooked 😅😎

Had a great laugh with this bake off horror and its medley of mature characters. It's definitely worth checking out. A great writer. Go get it.

    Delicious devilry!

This is a fun story about a baking contest gone horribly, horribly wrong. This would have put Dean Winchester off pie permanently!

  • Glasgowgal

A recipe for disaster when a spell summons demons to a small town bake sale. A fun, gruesome, quick read.

  • Megan Rose

The audiobook was perfection for this Demon mart story
