Woodland Terrors: The Cellar Door Issue #1 (The Cellar Door Anthology Series) Reviews

  • Erica Robyn Metcalf

This collection of short stories is the first entry in this new anthology collection, The Cellar Door. This one, titled Woodland Terrors, is certainly not for readers that are afraid of the woods and what lives inside the tree-line.

Unless, of course, you want to try to face that fear here!

I highly recommend picking this one up and reading it as soon as you can. The stories are just too good to allow this one to sit on your TBR.

But be warned, this is a collection to avoid if you’ve got a camping trip or any woods-focused activity coming up. For once, I’m glad we bought a house with neighbors within sight.

I’ve enjoyed everything Dark Peninsula Press has put out but this issue is my favorite so far and I can’t wait to see what happens next from this series!

This is a great collection from some fantastic writers.

The Cellar Door: A Themed Anthology Series Issue #1 was one of the best anthologies I have read yet. The prose were great in each story. The stories did great when it came to creep factors. They had great themes and made me, as a reader, consider things.

It was amazing how creative these authors were and how they were able to grasp me as a reader in despair and fear.

My favorite story was “The Sisters” by Ai Jiang.

“Above them the hooks rattled gently on their chains, tinkling like evil wind chimes.”—excerpt from “Pigfoot” by Daniel Barnett

This woodland terrors themed horror anthology includes a great range of tales.

The stand out stories for me are as follows:

“Circles” by Maggie Slater: A young girl tries to protect her pregnant sister from the spirits who circle ever closer.

In “Giant Killer” by Amelia Gorman, a giant and a giant killer face off, leaving the reader to decide which character is the true monster.

“One Red Shoe” by Scott Paul Hallam: On the anniversary of their young son’s disappearance, his parents find his shoe in the backyard, and from the woods, his voice beckons them.

“The Sisters” by Ai Jiang: Geyuan is forced to confront her fears by visiting the terrifying women of the forest.

“Pigfoot” by Daniel Barnett features a haunted past, an insatiable curiosity, and an urban legend that refuses to stop burning. “Pigfoot” is the shining star in this anthology, showing depth of character and a super satisfying and scary storyline.
