Retribution (Mystic, #4) Reviews

  • Chelsey

I've read all four in this series now but I'm not going to bother with writing a review for each book. I'll just leave my review of the series here. So if you haven't read any of the books it's possible this might include spoilers. Read at your own risk.

What can I say about this series other than, as Layla so often says, blah. I just wasn't really impressed. First, as is often my complaint with young adult stories, I hated the main character. Within the first few pages of meeting her I knew Layla and I were going to have problems. She's whiney, self-depreciating so that others will praise her, needy like nobody's business, and just overall pathetic. Yet despite all that Quin and everyone else she meets seem to believe she walks on water.

Speaking of Quin, can we talk about him for a minute? I'm just wondering, is he ever going to grow a pair because that boy is almost as pathetic as Layla. She walks into his life and he drops everything and everyone to wait on her hand and foot. Lets just sum it up to say that their relationship is scarily codependent and their pet names for each other kinda made me gag.

Moving on the the rest of the story. Which is actually all about Layla and how all these bad guys want her and how everyone is willing to protect her from said bad guys because they love her. Layla though, playing the role of the dumb heroine, is too stubborn to accept their help because they might get hurt. So instead of coming up with another viable option, she cries. Because you know, that's what silly heroines do. Oh and Quin, of course, is there to dry her tears.

So you're probably wondering why I bothered to keep reading through four books when I clearly don't like the series very much. I'll tell you why: because every book is actually just a part of the whole story. So there was never an end where I could stop, look back at what I'd read and realize how much it sucked. I would finished one book and have to start the next because the one I finished didn't really end.

I'll just summarize where I'm at right now. I've finally reached a pseudo end because the fifth book isn't out yet. I have no intentions of reading the fifth one when it comes out. I'm annoying that I paid foe these books just so I could see what would happen and then. Nothing. Happened. Ugh. Just take my advice and skip this series entirely.

Would I/Did I buy it? Unfortunately, yes. The first is free. After that they're $3.99 and $4.99 on amazon (price increases as the series goes on).
Would I recommend it? No way.
Will I read it again? Nope.

**Warning: Do not read if you haven’t read the first three books, Descension, Impassion, and Deception**

So, once again I am left speechless at the hands of B.C. Burgess. And I am not one to ever be at a loss for words. There’s just so much to say about the Mystic series. First off, this series never fails to blow me away. The details, the characters, the plot, the love scenes, and everything in between. I didn’t know what I was getting into at first, but now I’m caught and I don’t want to get out. The thing that astounded me in the first book of the series was the concept of love that the wizards and witches have. They completely fall in love so hard and so fast. Yet, B.C. portrays it in a way that isn’t cheesy, only awe-inspiring. She took love and intensified it. The idea of a love like that blows me away. Quin and Layla’s love just amazes me. They’ve known each other for about a week or two and they are in it forever. There’s no doubt. To imagine that kind of a love is unreal to me.

The story picks off right where the third one left off. Agro is hunting Layla down with an army. Meanwhile Quin and Layla made love for the first time (finally!) and they bonded. How it was a shock to them, I’m not really sure. But, I could have never predicted how different it would be from other bonded couples even with Quin being a bonded child and Layla being a child descended from two bonded lines. Of course, as happy as this is, it also implies more problems. I thought it was hysterical that everyone was shocked that Quin and Layla had just had sex. I mean, it had only been a week since they’ve met! I know it’s been like three books and it’s easy to get caught up in their world, but really it’s only been a week at this point. Then, there’s the whole should they run and hide from Agro forever or stay, fight, and probably die? It was heartbreaking either way. Obviously, they have to try to fight for their freedom. And to Layla’s shock and dismay, the rest of the coven decides to stand by her and Quin. So, the rest of the book is them preparing for the battle. Honestly, it felt a little déjà vu to me. Kinda similar to Stephanie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn where the Cullens reach out to vampires all over the world to try to get them to have a strong front to confront Aro. Then, they slowly have to reveal Renesmee to them. Except in this story it’s Layla who is the anomaly, well her and Quin’s auras and bonded lights. There was a lot of crying and heartbreak in this book. And wayyyy more steamy scenes. Which I’m not going to complain about, obviously. They go at it all the time, but I mean they’re teenagers. Who have magic powers and think that they’re going to die by the end of the week. They have good reasons. Agro scares me. He’s not human in his bad guy ways. I thought the subplot with Guthrie was interesting and I hoped it worked out in Layla’s favor in the end.

I was in awe of the way Layla handled her situation. Most of the time. She was just thrown into this world where she finds out pretty much all of her life is a lie. Oh, and she has magical powers and she is probably the most powerful witch out there. No big deal. Yes, she did have lots of emotional moments but who wouldn’t in her shoes? Her life turned a complete 180 degrees. The only thing that irritated me was that sometimes she was so slow catching on to Quin’s complete love and devotion to her. She was constantly trying to protect him, but ended up hurting him instead. I don’t know if I can talk about Quin much. Basically, he is the only book boyfriend wizard I will ever love. He is just too eloquent. I was highlighting paragraphs because of him. The way he takes care of Layla? Swoon. Calls her beautiful, love and angel? Double swoon. Is dominant in bed? Triple swoon. And the list goes on and on. Quin literally has no bad qualities. He’s alpha, sexy, protective, smart, powerful, sweet, and gahhh. Quin and Layla take PDA to a whole other level… Just sayin’. I loved it, and it’s so strange how the wizards and witches aren’t fazed by it at all. They’re basically in constant foreplay. It’s hysterical. I loveddd their family. So many more loveable charcters! Layla’s grandparents, Bree, Bann, Weylin, Kegan, Alana, Cordelia, and so many more. I couldn’t think about them dying in the battle.

The details that B.C. goes into to portray their world, lifestyle, and powers completely floors me. The reason that it’s taken four books just to get through two weeks in their life is because we get to be with them pretty much every hour of the way there. Some people think it might get repetitive, but I found it fascinating. Not many books do that. And besides, there were new developments basically every ten pages or so. Also, I don’t mind getting to spend all that time with Quin. There are just so many unexpected and unimaginable twists and turns in this series that I’m scared of what’s to come. I am very eager to read the next books in the series, however, my heart can only take so much damage at the expense of Quin and Layla! I’m going to pretend I didn’t read that epilogue, because I absolutely cannot deal with cliffhangers. I liked the way it ended sans cliffhanger. If you haven’t picked up this series look at the covers! They are too gorgeous not to. And the magical story is to die for. Now, excuse me while I go pester B.C. for the next books…

“I’m glad I give you a reprieve from the sorrow, but I’ll never stop trying. Until my final breath, I’ll do everything I can to give you the life you deserve. My heart might as well stop beating if it’s not beating for that purpose.”

9/6/13: Once again I am speechless at the hands of BC Burgess. I mean I don't know if I should be happy that I get to have more Quin and Layla even after the battle or sad because I know that a lottttt of shit is about to go down. Stop torturing them! Dammit. I need the next one. Now. Kinda wish I didn't read the epilogue... Full review to come at Romance Addict Book Blog

I absolutely love this series! In the first three books we follow Layla on her journey to discover the family she didn't know existed, while danger follows her in the shadows. We watch as a beautiful love story develops between Layla and Quin, and Layla embraces her new life as a member of a big, loving family and coven. As Layla develops her magic, and her bond with Quin and the coven strengthen, evil surfaces and threatens her new life and all that she loves. The author weaves such a beautiful, detailed world that you become a part of it. You feel the strong family bond, see the magic in brilliant detail, and feel the soul-shaking love between Quin and Layla. Sound good? It's amazing. But fasten your seat belt, because everything is intensified in Retribution, book 4 of The Mystic Series.

The relationship between Quin and Layla goes to a level we can only know through the pages in this book. They bond on every possible level, and make the term "soul mates" seem trivial. "What they had betrayed the boundaries of human language and couldn't be described, only felt." Heat? Oh yeah, there's heat. We're talking sexy, dominating wizard. "He may let her win outside the bedroom, but in this, he'd always have the upper hand." Souls that are bonded. "Only instinct driven by pleasure moved like that."

As the love intensifies, so does the evil. An evil that threatens to destroy them all in order to seize his obsession - the most powerful witch the world has seen. As Quin and Layla discover more about their bond, they prepare for battle. A battle that will end in loves lost and a dark side in Layla she fears will never leave.

This is an emotional ride. On one page you'll be enveloped by intense love, only to turn the page and cringe when you see the name Agro. Love to hate in the turn of a page. You will fall in love. You will laugh. You will cry. You will find out why you shouldn't anger an angel, and the term angel will take on a whole new meaning as another threat surfaces.

  • Beth

Five Stars because it deserves 5 stars. Her writing is amazing!

I went through every emotion. Joy and love for Quin and Layla in their special moments. Fear and sadness as they prepared to battle Agro. Buzzing from the intensity of the battle and finally anticipation of what was to come. The epilogue has opened a new story line and I can't wait to see what we will find in book 5.

"You once told me some things are worth dying for, and you're right. I have a long list of things worth dying for, and by hiding, Id be giving all but one of those things away."

    Retribution.

This is the continuation of a magical love story between Layla & Quin.
We pick up where we left off in "Deception" when Layla & Quin make magical love that bonds them. Their lights, gold and silver, are lights no one has seen before. Their auras have changed.
They first reveal their bonded lights to both their families who are in shock and they never thought it would be possible to see such lights. They realize that every magician out there will want to get their hands on them, like they are part of a freak show.
Layla is a miracle. "She's extraordinary right down to her toes." - Serafin

    They have two options:
    1. Leave. Hide from everyone, their family and friends, basically the entire Coven.
When I read this I said: Hell NO! This option is not possible. Layla just got to know her grandparents, the Coven and Quin and now she has to leave them behind? Of course Quin would have to go with Layla but they would both have to live in fear and hope that no one finds them. What kind of life is that???

    2. Stay. Fight. Or die trying.
This option didn't make me feel any better. They can get hurt, or killed.

My girl Layla made a wise decision though! She doesn't want to hide. She realized that if she gives up so easily her parents sacrifice was for nothing.

Through out the book we see the kind of love Layla & Quin have. It is exceptional. It is magical. It's the kind of love that will have your pulse racing.
Bonnie does an amazing job with expressing their feelings for each other. Layla cannot get enough of making love with Quin. She is addicted! My kind of gal! I wanted to slap her butt cheeks high-five her so many times! Purr this girl has gone wild, but can you blame her?!?
Quin knows how to treat Layla. I swooned every time Quin spoke beautiful words. He knows how to get a gal's heart racing!!!

There were times when one might question why does Quin do everything for Layla. We have an explanation from no other than Quin himself:
"I take care of you because I want to, because it makes me feel good." (cue the romantic music.!)

     photo laylaquin1_zpsb7607999.jpg

"You're so beautiful, Layla. Everything else looks ordinary in comparison."

     photo laylaquin3_zpsc858ccf2.jpg

You see what I mean? Your heart races when Quin speaks. Your body goes through all these emotions but I will keep it PG!!!

But it wasn't always this great. It wasn't always romantic. Quin & Layla had to prepare for the battle with Argo and his minions army. Lynette (an unforgivable) will stop at nothing to turn the tables on Argo. Will it work? Will she get herself killed? You will have to read Retribution to find out what happens.

     photo minionslol_zps709543b2.jpg

As you read you will be afraid for the bonded couple, for the Coven but you will soon realize that in the magical world family & friends stay together. They fight together. We see volunteers come from all over. We see family decide to fight. We see Layla broken down over the fact that they lose those close to them.

What we also see is traitors. We see spies. We see the evil lurking with the volunteers that are trying to kill Argo for their own personal reasons. (just wait until you read some of the heartbreaking stories)
We get to see how Layla & Quin prepare for this epic battle.

I cannot go into details about the battle as I don't want to spoil anything BUT be prepared. The goodbyes will make you cry. Have kleenex ready. You will be bawling and there will be snot all over you.
Injuries, deaths, captivation will all be apart of your mystic life. You will not want to miss this battle. Bonnie delivers.

No one gets in Layla's way. No One.

     photo LAYLA1_zps4d72f3dc.jpg

We experience their love for each other through out the book. I was panting for Quin non stop! - Thanks Bonnie!

"Even if I die tomorrow I'll be able to say I was a lucky man; that I lived a blessed life where my most amazing dreams came true. You've made my life breathtakingly beautiful and uniquely divine, and no matter how this turns out, I'll never regret one second I've had with you. Eleven days is short, but it's been long enough for you to provide me with more happiness than most people discover in a lifetime. For that, I owe you my heart and soul, and they're yours."

    One of my favorite quotes:

"You're amazing, Layla. What you do to me is incredible, and it's unbelievable how much I love you. You make everything better than okay, you make it perfect, and I'm going to make it perfect for you. I'm going to make it so that you're not afraid to close your eyes and sleep."

     photo laylaquin_zpsdd3be814.jpg

If you have not read the Mystic Series, you must! You will LOVE every. single. book!! Bonnie knows how to write!! It has to be due not only to her talent of writing but a talent of drinking lots of coffee to keep up with Quin & Layla!

"You will laugh. You will cry. You will drool. You will scream. You will pant. You will swoon. You will throw things. You will drink coffee. Lots of coffee. You will want to read it over & over again." - Jo (yes, I am quoting myself! :D)

I am not a big fan of paranormal (only read a few) but I gave it a try and read Descension and I was hooked! Bonnie captivated me in the first chapter of the first book! Her writing is exceptional! She has a way of describing the events and characters into a detail. I felt like I was in the magical world, like I was apart of it.

One of my favorite moments in the book was when Layla performed a magic show ( I won't spoil it) but I felt like I was actually there, apart of the show. It felt so real.
It's not often that you come across an author who can write books like that. Where you transform yourself into that world and feel all the emotions that the characters do.

The end of Retribution, which is the epilogue, is brilliant. It made me want the next book so much more. I cannot wait. Oh the torture. I love Bonnie & the waiting is worth it but I need my Quin fill now. Right now!

  • Romancerwblog

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review...

Retribution picks up right were we left Quin and Layla at the end of Deception. They've just consummated their relationship and are now a bonded couple. While they're overwhelmed with happiness they realize their lives are even more in danger than before because once Argo discovers what's happened they will either be forced to join his ranks or die refusing.

Now a bonded couple, Quin and Layla are even more powerful than before and Layla believes something good should come from this power and has chosen not to live the rest of her life in hiding. She wants to stand up to Argo and fight to keep the family she has only just found. With the knowledge they may only have a few days left to live Quin and Layla make the most of their time together never wasting a moment to express their love and devotion to one another. Retribution is filled with some serious passion, yes that means you are going to get plenty of hot and steamy love scenes, all of them so emotionally charged and are probably some of the most beautiful sex scenes I've ever read.

If possible it seems as though Quin is even more romantic and swoon-worthy in this story while also showing a side of dominance and let me tell you it's HOT! He always knows the perfect thing to say or do to make Layla completely at ease, always showing her support and encouragement when it's needed. Now that they've bonded he is even more protective of her and their relationship and I love how he always puts her needs and wants above his own, he always wants her to be comfortable in whatever situation they find themselves. He is ALWAYS thinking of her, this man is so totally in love with Layla he would literally give up his own life to save hers. Talk about undying devotion!

I have to confess I loved getting to see more Weylin, Kegan and Brietta. Wey and Bri seem to steal the scenes they're in with their humor and straightforward questions/observations. I love the comedic relief these two provide, its a nice break from story's overall intensity. I hope we get to see much more of them in the coming books because I've really developed a sense of fondness for all three.

As with all the books in this series Retribution is written with such beautiful, vivid descriptions it's as if you are living the story, seeing Layla's amazing magic tricks right out on the lawn with the other coven members. In the heat of the battle it's as if you are fighting alongside of Quin and Layla. Talk about talented writing. B.C. Burgess has truly outdone herself with this book.

While Retribution is filled with plenty of happiness you are constantly reminded a dark storm is quickly approaching, a battle which may or may not be won, but one that certainly could take the lives of some of our most favorite characters. So pull out the tissues because you are going to need them! B.C. Burgess is going to bring you to tears, I'm certain of it.

You are not going to believe the epilogue, talk about throwing you for a loop! I can guarantee you won't see the ending coming! It's intense, it's crazy, it's going to make you second guess everything you thought you already knew! I'm so nervous to see what's going to happen next in Destruction, but I can hardly wait for the next book to release.

Warning .. have tissues near by ...

When faced with the possibility of death, and you were given a choice … would you face the danger or flee? Layla and Quinn are faced with making a choice. What will they do?

Retribution, book 4 of the Mystic Series, immediately picks up from where Deception leaves off. Layla and Quinn, now a bonded couple, enjoy the results of their connection. They are more in tune with each other, more powerful, and quite an anomaly in their world. Yet Layla continues to be hunted by Argo and his army. They have a choice to make – run and hide or stay and fight. Whatever they decide to do, Quinn, ever her protector, has vowed to sacrifice anything and everything to keep Layla safe. Will he be called to do so? As a bonded mate, Layla finds courage, physical and emotional strength to face to bear the possibility of facing her ultimate fear. Will they both survive?

Retribution is a book that will take you through a gamut of emotions, passion and heat. The physical manifestations of their love is so beautifully portrayed and choreographed. Though I must admit, there were a lot of those scenes, and I found myself skipping through them as I wanted to get to the action of the story. I also found myself wishing that there would be more physical independence between them. Anytime that Layla had to move, Quinn seemed to be carrying her around – so much so that It seemed that Layla’s face was permanently glued to Quinn’s neck.

Other significant characters were introduced in the story, showing how Layla was surrounded by love – from her family, her extended family, her coven and Quinn. I found the special relationship between Layla and Alana so endearing and wished there was a bit more interaction between them.

This book comes with a five-tissue warning. Make sure that you have plenty on hand when you get past the halfway point. The emotional scenes are so heart rendering that I found myself doing the ugly cry many times over. I am sure that you will agree with me when you get to that point.

The book provides us a resolution to Argo’s quest for more power, and very cleverly sets up what could happen in the next book, and I can’t wait to get my hands on book 5 of this series.

The best yet in the Mystic series.

I awed, I cried (many times), I laughed & was left with oh my goodness as I finished the Epilogue. Bonnie manages to to bring out the best & worst in her characters while twisting love & compassion throughout the story. She has you souring with love & then landing with a bump & reaching for the tissues.

You will never want to anger an angel after reading this. You need to read the first three books before reading this & so you can fall in love with Layla & Quin just like many other readers. The love & bond between them & their families will have you wishing that you were part of their coven.

Laylas love for children & her compassion for justice made me love her even more when the two are brought together. Her constant blushing as she faces uncomfortable situations including seeing her female family & friends naked, her need to thank people even when they don't expect it, her agony over over decisions she does not want to make & her form of justice endears her even more than in previous books.

Quins needs to make her happy & feel loved while still having to make hard decisions. It broke my heart as he had to make her sad & watch her go through the hate & anger the situation brings to her but he still manages through their love to bring her some of the happiness she so deserves. He is her constant hero & proves to her over & over his love for her is a source for her to draw on when she needs it.

Her families heartache as they have to watch her go through what no one should have to go through. All of those who stand with them (whether she wanted them to or not) & the struggles within the family & friends they may never see again to make a stand against those who would destroy they lives.

I am so looking forward to book 5 where we get some answers to the questions raised in the epilogue.

Received an ARC from the author.

FIVE AMAZING STARS!!! WOW!! This book blew me away!! Such love and emotion shown from the entire coven and so many others!!

When we left off in Deception, Layla and Quin had finally bonded. Now their lights shine like nothing anyone has ever seen. Layla's emotions are so much higher in this book and Quin's protective streak is even greater. With the looming Argo not far behind them, they get ready to face the battle of a lifetime. So many tears are shed. Volunteers and family from all over convene to take down the Dark Elite. There are traitors and spies on both sides who will be found out. Layla's relationship with baby Alana is one of the most precious relationships one can have with a child, it will bring you to tears every time they are around. As time for the epic battle approaches, families will become closer than ever and some will sacrifice everything. The Dark Elite will learn not to mess with the Earth Angel's family as she has more power than ever seen and will destroy everything in her path to protect and save those she loves.

The epilogue of this book really has me going. I cannot wait for Destruction! I hope B.C. Burgess does not make us wait too long!

I am amazed at the brilliant writing this author does and will always be a huge fan! I very highly recommend this series to any and all! I cannot wait to see how others will view this book and truly hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

I don't even know where to begin!! Retribution sure did not fail in its epic continuation of Quin's & Lalya's journey. Just when you thought the love of two people couldn't be any stronger or my passionate, Retribution takes it to a whole new level!!

Retribution is packed full of steamy, unrepenting passion, and by passion I mean sex, that it takes your breath away. The scenes are so masterfully crafted that you can't help but to get lost in them. And that's only half of what Retribution offers!!!

Those that have read my reviews in the past know I don't give spoilers, and the same is true for this one. So its going to hard to describe the rest of Retribution without revealing its awesome secrets. But here it goes!!

For all those questions the Mystic followers have had about Lalya's powers, you are in for a big treat. Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what she's capable of. Its utterly epic!! And as for the war with the Unforgivables, all I can say on that is, grab your biggest cup of coffee, your most comfortable blanket and hunker down for the unexpected. This is the book you all have been waiting for!!

I received an ARC from the author.

    Check out my blog.:D
    High On Books

The one word I would use to describe this book is BEAUTIFUL

This book is still pretty awesome and long. It's just such a beautiful book about love and all those things you go through in your life. Bonnie just has a way with words. She has a way of putting words together in a really beautiful way. I have never heard anyone I know speak like the characters in this book but who cares! They are beautiful to read.

I think Quin just gets hotter and sweeter with each book. The way he talks to everyone is just so polite and nice. Excpet when he got mad which was awesome.:D

I hate it when Layla becomes so freakin insecure. It's pretty much the only thing I don't like about her. When she let's go of her insecurities she becomes so awesome I wanna be like her. It seems that she also gets more powerful every single time and some questions I had were answered in this book but even more questions appeared in this book.

I seriously can't wait for the next book.

  • Kindle Bookworm

The book is fast paced and heartwarming since we get to see the continuing love story of Quin and Layla and their interaction with their family (coven) and friends. Retribution takes us on a wonderful emotional roller coaster of sweet and steamy romance, anxiety, tears, sadness, happy sighs, laughs and an epic battle with pure evil.

The ending blew my mind and I can't wait for more!

  • Joanna Mongelluzzo

    Amazing series. Bonnie delivers again!
The love between Layla & Quin is so much stronger in this book because of them bonding.

It's another emotional roller coaster. Love, magic, good & evil, war, spies, traitors, family, friends.
You have it all. You will laugh & you will cry.

Most of all, you will love it. It will leave you wanting more.

  • Britt

So... I was a weeping baby reading this book. Alana completely stole my heart and had me all sorts of jacked up. I loved the fierce love and loyalty displayed! This book is all about love, there's no way to read it and not feel the love. I can't wait for the next book in the series to see her families response and where they go from here!

  • B.C. Burgess

Retribution is now available for purchase!

One evil gone and how many more to take his place. This tale just keeps getting better and better and all i can say is the wait is too long till the next book is due for release,

  • em cooper

I found this book the most interesting book out of the series as something finally happened!! Even though this isn't the end of series I'm going to finish on this book, I started to struggle to get through it and I feel happy just stopping after this book.
Layla is supposed to be the strongest there is and I wish we saw more of this throughout the series and not just towards the end of this book.

I honestly cannot get enough of Layla Love (especially) and Quin. Although, I do find myself getting irritate with Quin. I mean come on, man! You're making us guys look bad for not matching your level! Do you know how hard it is make a girl float and send magical vibrations into their bodies? All jokes aside, Quin is the epitome of fictional boyfriend material, and he expertly handles keeping the sexiest, dreamiest, most amazing fictional crush of mine happy.

I thoroughly enjoy each and every book in the Mystic Series when I read one, reading each story slowly and appreciatively. Burgess is a master storyteller and her epic romance (there's no way more perfect to describe it honestly) is one that I wish I could get even a sliver of in real life when I finish turning the pages. Quin and Layla's relationship is one that every sane person on earth strives to become a part of (apart from the obsessed, maniacal wizard of course).

I hear all these shining reviews, mostly focusing on Quin, but I can't get enough of Layla and the children. If Layla and Quin were to ever reproduce, I have no doubt in my mind, that that would be the most beautiful and loved child to ever grace the face of the earth. Seeing (okay, reading) the interactions between Layla and Alana (THE most adorable character of all, like ever) warms my heart to no end. *Minor spoiler: When I saw that Alana had gotten hurt, I literally almost threw my Kindle across the room. I know it was easily fixed, but still, I adore Alana, and seeing her like that ticked me off. But it WAS easily fixed so I got over it just as fast as she did thanks to Layla Love.

Seriously, is there anything Layla can't make better with her mere presence? She's the best thing to happen to both her coven and my reading life. I'm so glad to have been able to meet her and watch her grow from the shy, easily embarrassed young woman to this amazingly powerful, yet vulnerable witch. Her journey is one I enjoy joining her on, and just like Quin, I sincerely hope that everything works out for her and their family.

Overall, this book is just like the others, and at the same time better. It's chock full of the sappy, heart string-pulling love I've come to...well love, action that is refreshing, and villains that aren't as evil as some of the others (I'm looking at you Guthrie). The epilogue definitely set up what I'm sure will be an even more epic book 5. I can't wait to see what Burgess has in store for Layla Love and her family/friends.

I remember the first time I read this I was just too overwhelmed with emotions to write a review that would make sense. Mostly because it was as amazing as the previous books and made me the usual blubbering mess.

Although, Layla's emotional states this time around, made it a bit frustrating at times. Don't remember if I was as annoyed with her uncontrollable tear shedding the first time I read it. I understood the situation was a sad one, but I often wished she would try and imagine a brighter outcome to their predicament. You know, have some hope. And anyway, by the end of the book I couldn't blame her anymore for feeling so lost and broken.

I did liked that she had a bad-ass side to her, even though it took a huge emotional upheaval to bring that side out of her. I also love the connections the peaceful magicians have with each other and how much they are willing to sacrifice for those they care for.

Bitter sweet ending, was shocked on my first read and still am at what Layla and Quin now face. Oh the possibilities. Poor Layla, can't seem to catch a break.

Now I get to see with fresh eyes what Layla and Quin have in store for them as I continue this amazingly thrilling adventure.

Retribution is the 4th book in the Mystic series, and the first that I am reviewing. I think anyway. I tend to not like reviewing books in a series separately, since I think that a mediocre 2nd book can be made up by an outstanding rest of the series, etc.  I'm stopping now though because I see a trend that is continuing with the series that is finally starting to drive me crazy, even despite the fact that this is an outstanding series...

The first half of ALL of the books in this series drags on. And on. It was okay in the first couple of books, because the author is amazing at weaving images through words. But the further into the series that we go, the less I care to read all of that and the more I want to skim through it to get to the meat of the book. I plow through though, because I know that it will be great once I finally get there. And obviously given the 4.5 stars, the ending is enough that I only want to take away a half star from the book as a whole.

Anyway, there isn't really a solid reason behind this review, because if you have made it this far into the series, I know that there is nothing that can be said to turn anyone on or off of this series. It's amazing. I just wanted to throw my complaint out there.

I've meet Bonnie during NYC book signing event. My fisrt impresion of her person was how sweet and humble she is. Just by looking at her was like looking into Layla's heart.

It upseats me greatly when I read reviews and people say that the book is sappy, chessy and the characters are very codependent. Honestly did you really read the book? Did you pay attention? They are magicians who are very promisuous, especially when bonded. This is how the author decided to portray the characters whether you like it or not. I think it is very disrespectful to give one or two stars because Bonie's writting is very good and the plot is well developed. This is not one of selfpublished stand alone books where everyother page you see errors and sometimes you wonder where this story is going.

Bonnie you did a great job! Once again you've captured my heart :) As I said in my first review I apprecite the fact that you don't rush with the story. It was fun to read about Layla's transition into a more powerful witch and how her confidence is coming out. I was anticipating the clash between Layla and Argo and I have to say great fighting scenes! Can't wait to read more!!

Oh my gosh this is an emotional ride through this book. It has to be the best book in the series. I don't know about others readers but I needed tissues. The relationship between Quin and Layla goes to a level we can only know through the pages in this book. They bond on every possible level, and make the term "soul mates" seem trivial. "What they had betrayed the boundaries of human language and couldn't be described, only felt." Heat!!! Quin and Layla make the most of their time together never wasting a moment to express their love and devotion to one another. Retribution is filled with some serious passion, yes that means you are going to get plenty of hot and steamy love scenes, and it was not always about sex. I was amazed with the battle with Agro. Layla surprise the heck out of me. She did what I was hoping for throughout the book. She really stepped up and my gosh showed a different side of herself. It was utterly epic!!!

I have really enjoyed these books even though there have definitely been annoying facets to this series thus far. Such as the overuse of the word 'ornery'.......picky I know. But most of all despite the main character of Layla being described as the most beautiful and captivating female (witch) ever, and also capable of unsurpassed and still somewhat unknown degrees of magical power, she regularly appears quite sappy. I so want her to be an amazing heroine but the way her lack of confidence and serious dependence on her mate, Quin, and the overkill way he completely panders to her does wear a bit thin. Having said that, I do find myself still wanting everything to work out for Quin and Layla. There is also enough drama and intrigue with the various evil and mysterious other characters to keep me wanting. Look forward to the developing story in the next book.

Layla is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Quin is also much stronger than before now that they are bonded. Their love is something to be envied. Layla has determination and a spirit that is fierce when it comes to her loved ones. Although the villian is pretty evil in this case, Agro, who is pretty much blinded by the passion of acquiring and all powerful witch, he is not invincible. With the growing armies on both sides, Layla and Quin discover other foes who want Agro dead, but that there might still be imminent danger with Agro's absence. Layla also becomes acquainted with her inner rage and her own breaking point when the person that matters the most to her risks everything to keep her safe. There's so much at stake and yet the story continues even if the current evil is removed, as more evil awaits.

I didn’t think BC Burgess could do any better but she just blew my mind. I’ve come to expect great things from this amazing author when it comes to magic and romance, but she has a taste for war! Book four picks up right where three left off and builds up beautifully. Once again I was thrust into the world of the Mystic Series and once again I was sent into an emotional roller coaster filled with happy tears, ugly tears, cheers and jeers. If you thought the action of the first three books was intense, I suggest holding onto your panties because this will blow you away. I cannot wait to see what happens next. The next stage of Layla’s life is about to begin and I cannot wait to follow her journey.
