School’s First Day of School  meets  Good Night, Gorilla  in this irresistible bedtime story about School getting ready to go to sleep!
As the sun sets, a security guard arrives to help this sleepy little school get some rest. From tucking in chairs to checking all the locks to listening to the silverware snoring, she makes her moonlit rounds. One by one, the lights are turning off and everyone is turning in. Well, everyone except for the turtle from 2A. Will this escapee make it back to bed on time?

Bailey's lusciously lyrical and dreamy story expertly peels back the curtain for the littlest readers who ever wondered what happens to school at night, making GOODNIGHT SCHOOL the perfect pick for early childhood educators, back-to-school, and, of course, bedtime.

Goodnight School Reviews

  • John Mullarkey

This is what happens when the school day is over and the staff and students leave for the day - the school building is personified and getting sleepy as the night guard goes room to room - we see the quiet emptiness of the building as a missing class turtle “joins the night guard’s rounds”. It is perfect for kids that are new to school and have imaginations as to what the school building is like when they leave for the day. As the notes suggest it is very much like Goddnight Gorilla replacing the zoo for a school. The illustrations are detailed and very much compliment the story. A great book to share or to read with an adult or friend.

I adore Doerrfeld's work whether she is telling the words or pictures.
This is sure to be a lovely book for classrooms and young school children.
The tour of the school is enjoyable...the turtle through-line...

It does feel long though, something I was ill-prepared for, despite the rhyme that should and does propel us forward.

A recent borrow from the library to ease back to school jitters. It is kid approved by my 5, 4, and 2 year old (who had great funny searching for the turtle on each page - iykyk). When a children's book combines a cute story, with cute illustrations, and the gaggle of children collectively share enthusiasm/make multiple requests for it, it's gotta be a five star.

  • Sarah Threlkeld

Especially fun read aloud for the end of the school year.

  • Annamarie Carlson (she, her)

One of those books that tells a story in the pictures separate from the text. Cute.

  • Lysa

This was so cute! There were little sleepy faces on every page TuT

  • Elizabeth

    The illustrations are just perfect.

  • Panda Incognito

The story feels overly long, but I love this illustrator's work, and kids will enjoy spotting the turtle on different pages.

  • Gabrielle Stoller

What might be an average "school goes to sleep" book is made elevated by Cori Doerrfeld's illustrations. I cannot wait to do this book when my kiddos are back in school for the fall!
