Sparks fly when a romance novelist and a documentary filmmaker join forces to craft the perfect Hollywood love story and take both of their careers to the next level—but only if they can keep the chemistry between them from taking the whole thing off script.

Felicity “Fizzy” Chen is lost. Sure, she’s got an incredible career as a beloved romance novelist with a slew of bestsellers under her belt, but when she’s asked to give a commencement address, it hits her: she hasn’t been practicing what she’s preached.

Fizzy hasn’t ever really been in love. Lust? Definitely. But that swoon-worthy, can’t-stop-thinking-about-him, all-encompassing feeling? Nope. Nothing. What happens when the optimism she’s spent her career encouraging in readers starts to feel like a lie?

Connor Prince, documentary filmmaker and single father, loves his work in large part because it allows him to live near his daughter. But when his profit-minded boss orders him to create a reality TV show, putting his job on the line, Connor is out of his element. Desperate to find his romantic lead, a chance run-in with an exasperated Fizzy offers Connor the perfect solution. What if he could show the queen of romance herself falling head-over-heels for all the world to see? Fizzy gives him a hard pass—unless he agrees to her list of demands. When he says yes, and production on The True Love Experiment begins, Connor wonders if that perfect match will ever be in the cue cards for him, too.

The True Love Experiment is the book fans have been waiting for ever since Fizzy’s debut in The Soulmate Equation. But when the lights come on and all eyes are on her, it turns out the happily ever after Fizzy had all but given up on might lie just behind the camera.

    So…who’s a fan of reality TV? Maybe those “dating” shows that keep popping up everywhere? Yes? I thought so! Then you’re going to adore this book!

    Fizzy Chen is a romance novelist that can’t seem to find love for herself. Her personal love radar is dead and now it’s spilling into her work, leaving her with a serious writers block. What must she do to restart her aching heart?

    Connor Price produces documentaries. (Boring!)🥱. But the company he works for is going in a completely different direction and asks Connor to put together a reality dating show featuring none other than Fizzy Chen!

    Can Connor pull off a wildly successful reality show and save his career? More importantly, will Fizzy at last find her love?

    This book is listed as a stand-alone. But there’s several references to the previous novel, The Soulmate Equation. So if you do have the opportunity…read that one first and it’ll make the experience of diving into this novel that much better!

    I loved this book! Basically because I too have fallen victim to those crazy dating shows! Yes! It’s true! They’re fun, wild and make for good escapism!

    Christina (&) Lauren once again deliver a fun contemporary romance novel that will keep you laughing and cheering throughout! These two authors make an incredible team!

    A buddy read with Susanne!

    Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books.

    i REALLY enjoyed this book!!! Fizzy was a funny and fiesty MC, Connor was a perfect book boyfriend, the plot was creative and i loved the character and plot crossovers from THE SOULMATE EQUATION.

    romcom’s aren’t typically faves of mine as i prefer emo romances, but this book had me laughing and smiling and vibing. Christina Lauren can do no wrong tbh 👏🏼 it felt like their tried and true, fun love stories.

    the MCs had so much chemistry and i could totally feel the love story/connection. some scenes were also very steamy 🥵 and all of the banter and one liners were great. the characters are older adults so you can definitely see the maturity and growth/reflection they have.

    typically reality show tropes and plots are an eye roll for me (i’m looking at you, THE CHARM OFFENSIVE lol) but this was a fun spin on the tv show trope and i enjoyed how it wasn’t the ENTIRE book—we had 150 pages of character and plot development before the show started and IMO, it wasn’t even the main plot which i very much appreciated. also one more round of applause for Connor… he was the best 🥹🥹🥹

    👉🏼 pro tip: if you don’t read THE SOULMATE EQUATION first, there will be spoilers!!!

    thanks to Gallery Books for the gifted early copy. this will be a fun one to pick up and a perfect beach/pool binge when it releases in May!

    This is hands down my new favorite Christina Lauren book!! A MUST read for all romance fans and the perfect sequel to The Soulmate Equation.

    What I LOVED:
    1. The Premise! A successful romance writer is casted as the lead in a reality dating TV show and falls for the show’s producer. What could be better?!!
    2. Fizzy! I loved her in The Soulmate Equation as a supporting character but she made an even better main character. Her sex-positivity, bluntness, and humor made her so likable and there was something special about watching her find joy in a place where she least expected to.
    3. Connor! I know I say this after many romance books but he is now my book boyfriend. I loved how sincere, caring, open and honest he was. The way he fell for Fizzy and appreciated her for her was perfection. Plus, he’s British… and tall.
    4. The FLIRTING! Seriously this book has the BEST banter and there were so many times I was full on laughing out loud. The added element of forbidden love and forced proximity while filming made all the angst and tension shine.
    5. The single parent trope! Connor is a single parent, which is a favorite trope of mine because I always love when romances add kids to their stories.
    6. All the Jess/River! I was surprised by how big of a role Jess and River, and even Jude, played in this book. CL did a great job refreshing you on all the small details from The Soulmate Equation too, so I didn’t feel lost in the beginning, especially because DNADuo was tied into the reality show.
    7. All the pop culture references!!! Yes, Harry Styles got mentioned twice :)
    8. The grand gesture! It was perfect and while it easy to predict how the story would play out, it didn’t take away from the enjoyment whatsoever.

    Thank you SOO much Gallery Books for the ARC! This one comes out May 16th and is so worth it :)!!

    I didn't read The Soulmate Equation as this is my first book by this writing duo. The main character of this book, Fizzy, was also a character from The Soulmate Equation but this is definitely a stand-alone. This isn't my usual type of book but I wanted to give these popular authors a chance and I have to say it was pretty funny and sexy. And for a romantic comedy, it was emotional too.

    I really liked both Fizzy and Connor as characters and as a couple. There was wonderful banter and connection between them. Like I said I don't normally read this kind of book but they were hot AF. I don't watch reality shows like The Real Housewives or The Bachelor and the fact that I liked this book even though there is a Bachelor-like show as the main plot says a lot about how well done this book is.

    Fizzy is a strong, independent woman who goes after what she wants but Connor is no push-over. The book is very realistic with ex-boyfriends, ex-wives, kids and job issues. I really liked that about the book too. I don't think I'd read any other books by these ladies as it isn't my cup of tea but I can certainly see why they're so popular.

    Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5/5,Romance)

    If you are a romance reader, don't even bother with my review. Just get your cute butt into your car, beeline to your nearest bookstore or library and grab this baby.

    This book reads like a love letter to romance novels and those who create and enjoy them. I was left over the moon happy as if this love story had happened to me! Which is quite simply why I love romance novels. I was consumed by butterflies and first-date anticipation reading this. Can you believe this is Christina Lauren's 30th book!? I always loved getting lost in their sexy and fun stories, but this book felt different. I am no literary critic, but their writing was better than ever. The banter was funnier than they've ever written, the spicy scenes were more delicious, and the whole big fat book was just… heart eyes romance perfection.

    This love story is about Fizzy Chen & Connor Prince. Fizzy is a romance novelist who's recently hit a wall with her writing. While normally she's churning out swoony romance novels and dating the eligible men of San Diego, we find her at a point in her life where it feels like she's hit a wall when it comes to her writing and dating life. Connor is a serious documentary filmmaker forced to produce his first-ever reality dating show as the studio he works for needs a cash cow, and Connor needs the job to stay close to his daughter. When Connor meets Fizzy by chance, he is struck by inspiration- wouldn't the world love to watch their favorite romance novelist fall in love? (Answer: yes, we loved watching her fall in love!)

    I think I made the synopsis sound really cheesy, but honestly, this story is fresh and funny.

    This book is sexy, funny, and just downright delightful. I honestly cannot wait to see what Christina Lauren writes next.

    I don't consider this book a B.R.A.D. as it's plot-driven vs. "when's the next time they're gonna bang" driven, but it is hot, sexy, with open-door scenes. Christina Lauren got their start writing BRADs, so we are in expert hands when it comes to the steamy stuff.

    Thoughts: One measure I have when deciding how much I love a book, is whether or not I want to turn around and read it again immediately. I can safely say, The True Love Experiment has hit that bar and beyond. Since finishing it yesterday, I cannot stop thinking about it. Is this my new favorite Christina Lauren book? Yes, yes it is.

    When I heard Fizzy was getting her own story, I quickly did a binge reread of The Soulmate Equation to refresh my memory of this really unique world and set of characters. And while I still love it, I was not prepared for how much more I was going to love Fizzy and Connor’s story. From the witty banter to the off the charts chemistry; the friends to lovers build up to the fun reality show element, this book is done to absolute perfection.

    Do yourself a favor and preorder this one, then read it the second you can get your hands on it. You will not be disappointed.

    Yikes. This was not it.

    I usually enjoy CL for my beachy reads but just being completely honest, I really didn't like this one. I can sum it up in one word. BORING. It was so boring. It felt very formulaic and ok, I realize that these kinds of books tend to lean that way anyway but this one had no soul whatsoever.

    The premise was about a reality dating show that casts the potential boyfriends based on archetypical tropes, the one that got away, the hero, the vampire ect. Very on the nose but ok, Fizzy, yes that's her name, is a romance author and the "bachelorette" of said show. But she has her eye on the single dad show producer, Conor, that she non-stop ogles and objectifies every second of the day.

    Fizzy felt like a caricature. I think the intention was to make her this sex positive woman but instead it was actually her entire personality and it made her feel like this creeper instead. Conor just didn't have a personality and seemed to fall in love with Fizzy bc she was trying to jump his bones at every opportunity.

    So yeah, I was so disappointed with this one especially since I know CL is capable of such magic like Love and Other Words and The Unhoneymooners.

    HELLO!!!! EXCUSE ME!!!! I NEED TO TALK TO CHRISTINA AND LAUREN ABOUT HOW THIS BOOK IS HORNY AS FUCK AND ALSO MADE ME SO EMO!!!! I WILL NEVER KNOW PEACE!!!!

    It's no secret whatsoever that I love CLo's writing (and also love them as people), but God, The True Love Experiment was on a whole other fucking level. Fizzy was even more delightful as a main character, and Connor was the truest of romance novel daddies. The TV show concept was adorable, and I love me some precocious children. But above all, I adore how this book was a giant send-up to romance readers everywhere. What an absolutely delightful and fitting tribute from two icons of the genre we all know and love.

    Anyway, if y'all need me, I'm currently trapped in a glass case of emotion with no means of escape.

    WOWZA! A 10 star wonder! This book sizzles! It was funny, light, entertaining with enough drama to hit all the romantic quotas. 'The True Love Experiment', along with 'Love and Other Words,' are my favorite Christian Lauren books. These ladies know how to write!

    Fizzy (Felicity) Chen is a character from the previous book 'Soulmate Equation.' Though this is not a sequel or a spin off, it's a book for the beloved character, Fizzy. She was absolutely hilarious in the first book and I couldn't wait to read her own quest to find love.

    First of all, I love the author's decision to make the protagonist of Asian American decent without focusing on her being "different." It was seamless, the way it should be. Fizzy is provocative, hilarious, and independent. She says what she thinks, thinks how she feels. As a romance author, she's in a writers block. When Connor Prince, a filmmaker is sequestered to step out of his usual documentary films and make a reality show, he chooses Fizzy, the romance novelist as the main character.

    Fizzy and Connor immediately fall into something more than just coworkers, but the biggest dilemma--they can't be together. She's looking for love in a reality DATING show, she can't fall for the producer of the show.

    The True Love Experiment builds characters with intense chemistry, the kind that comes once in a life time. This isn't an enemies to lovers story, but a love to lovers story of two people bound by duty and rules. It was intense and unputdownable. I loved the character of Connor, he was not broody or mean, simply upright. Their connection was ELECTRIC, the kind that makes you feel whiplash and enough character jealousy and desperation for you to smolder.

    The writing was crisp and witty with dialogue that was perfectly congruent.

    Overall, a fun, exciting read with enough predictability to keep you grounded.

    the setup…
    Felicity (Fizzy) Chen is a revered and successful romance novelist who, until recently, was loving her life. Now she’s suffering from writer’s block and the sudden realization that she’s never experienced the love she so skillfully has written about in her books. Enter Connor Prince, a renowned documentary filmmaker and single dad who is suddenly faced with a professional crisis…help his company boost profits by creating a reality show or lose his job. That’s well out of his wheelhouse but karma is on his side when a chance encounter with Fizzy sets in motion a clever idea for a show, which also involves her at center stage. What evolves is the True Love Experiment that is destined to succeed…for all the wrong reasons.

    the heart of the story…
    I was a Fizzy fan (such a great nickname!) from
    The Soulmate Equation and was over the moon when I learned she’d be the headliner in this story. True confession, though…I’ve never watched any of these dating reality TV shows, nor wanted to, so I was a little apprehensive about that being the focus. Not to worry though because this show was in the hands of a really skilled producer and a writer who understood the heartbeat of romance. I loved everything about it, how it was designed to be honest and authentic, lacking all the contrived elements I typically loathed. And, the chemistry between Fizzy and Connor was lovely, sexy and romantic. What could go wrong when she was supposed to be finding her “true love” from the show’s crop of men who Connor personally selected?

    the narration…
    Both of the narrators fit their characters perfectly, or at least the way I’d imagined them. Kay captured Fizzy’s spirit, nature and wit while Cole sounded delicious as Connor. They lifted a fabulous story off the pages, as if these characters were real life.

    the bottom line…
    I had high hopes for this story and loved every minute of my listening experience. Even though I knew there’d eventually have to be a reckoning, I didn’t care because getting to that point was so much fun. Prepare yourself for a steamy, fun romance and a reality show you wish was streaming in real life. This was special and the listening experience just put me in a happy place.

    Christina Lauren have done it again! In this book, Fizzy gets her shot at romance. I loved her character in
    The Soulmate Equation. In my review for that book, I said, "We all need a little Fizzy in our lives!" and voila I got a little more Fizzy in my life!!!!!

    Fizzy is a bestselling romance novelist who realizes that she has never fallen in love. She's fallen in lust, but love - Nope, not once!

    Connor Prince is a documentary filmmaker and single dad. He loves what he does. Then his boss orders him to create a reality show, thus putting his career on the line. He is desperate and after a chance encounter with Fizzy, the queen of romance, suggests that she go on the show and fall in love in front of tv viewers. She isn't thrilled by it but then agrees only if Connor meets her demands.

    Oh la la.... this was a fun, entertaining, witty, sexy, and hard to put down book. Christina Lauren have this down and know what they are doing. This book was so good, and chemistry filled. I listened to the audiobook and loved it. The narration was fabulous as was the plot of this book.

    If only reality tv dating shows were this good!

    thank you to netgalley for giving me this arc in exchange for an honest review.

    this book started off really strong and i was really enjoying it! i loved fizzy from the soulmate equation and i was so excited to read about her. even though it was good at the beginning, it just went downhill from there.

    my first issue was connor. i did not like that man at all really. he was so rude at the beginning when it came to romance novels and people who wrote romance novels and it was never really talked about later on. i wish him and fizzy had a conversation about how he used to feel about them and how he feels now. that felt kind of rushed over and tossed to the side. secondly, i could not handle the nickname he gave her, sweet. idk why but that just gave me the ick. not even like sweetheart or anything?? like why just sweet … so strange.

    my next issue and the BIGGEST one i had about the book was the justification of cheating and how the characters viewed this. what i didn’t understand was why people were saying that this person made a mistake in the past and how they’ve grown and shit but nah, once a cheater always a cheater. yes, his partner did forgive him, BUT that doesn’t mean that everyone else can invalidate fizzy’s feelings for being thrown / turned off from wanting to be with connor. that is a perfectly valid excuse for not wanting to pursue something anymore. the fact that jess (fizzys best friend) was not seeing fizzy’s side of things was incredibly frustrating because she kept backing connor up about how he didn’t mean to do it and how he’s grown up so much since then. yes, it was years ago but that doesn’t excuse the fact that he did it in the first place when he was in a COMMITTED marriage. this made me hate the book even more and i lost all liking for any of the characters. also, this was the main conflict. why did it have to be cheating? and why does everyone think he’s such a good guy? i actually could not.

    also, the amount of times i read the words ‘hot’ or ‘sexy’ was astounding. we can have romance books without adding those words in every two sentences!

    My god! I think this is the best romance I have read in forever. 🔥 The authors say it is a love letter to the reader and my heart believes that too. Amazing characters and an amazing story - funny, sexy, passionate, intense, beautiful. 10 Stars!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If there is an author that is a one click wonder, for me it is Christina Lauren. I have been reading books by this dynamic duo since the Beautiful series (yes, I read them all!)
    Some I can say were favorites and this one is going to rank right up there at the top! The authors say it is a love letter to the reader and my heart believes that too.
    So what was it about this book that captured my heart? It is the intense connection between the two main characters.
    The author was able to articulate the undercurrent that runs between two people when you have that deeper connection. The tummy butterflies; the secret looks; the silent messages that flow between soul connections; the energy that floats around them; the heated passion that tells the true story.
    The authors have a magical way with words that speaks to the reader’s heart and soul. They make you wish for your own love experiment and connection. Christina Lauren truly is a romance author that stands apart. They create fun-loving, wacky, wild, and wonderful characters that are oh so memorable and delightful.
    The True Love Experiment is a must-read for romance lovers. Period! Amazing characters and an amazing story – funny, sexy, passionate, intense, beautiful.
    3.5 rounded down for the True Love Connection, a sort-of-sequel to 2021’s “The Soulmate Equation”, with the DNA-Duo technology featuring, along with River & Jessica back as secondary characters. This one’s about Jess’ friend, Fizzy, a romance writer who’s lost her mojo & is cast in a reality dating show, where she instead gets involved with her “DILF hot Brit” exec producer. The first third is really very slow, but once the show starts filming, it quickly picks up. Appreciate the diversity and inclusion in the casting, however, just a bit too spicy 🌶️🌶️ for my personal taste.
    I love so many of Christina Lauren’s books, but they are definitely a hit or miss author duo for me and lately I’ve had more misses than hits with them, so I was so happy this was a win for me!
    The True Love Experiment was such a fun read. I’m not always a huge fan of reality shows in books (I don't especially love them in real life) but this was so well done! I loved the book boyfriends as contestants, both Fizzy and Connor were great and you could feel their chemistry from the start. The ending was extra satisfying and I enjoyed this one a lot!
    DNA Match, hit or miss?
    I was captivated by the concept of this story. Despite knowing the inevitable outcome, it was enjoyable to witnessing the entire romantic journey of Connor and Fizzy. They are truly perfect characters with chemistry that sizzles!
    I haven’t read it but I bought it so I search for something a friend from here have said and…
    Turns out that H was married to ow bc she got pregnant. They have been friends for a while and have been having sex for 6 months. They are 22. So, bc his dad was an absent father he decided to marry ow. Some time in the future he is more and more sure that he is not in love with ow but loves her. So, instead of having a conversation he decides to cheat on her.
    They have an argument while he is at work and decides to go to a bar and hook up with someone. He waits in his car all night so when he gets home she knows what happened and he can chicken out of telling. She is angry and heartbroken and divorce him. THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE HERO. I don’t care if H was not in love with her. He could have tried to do better for her and for their child. I can’t imagine what she was feeling ALL NIGHT when she was waiting in their home while he was with ow. H told h all of this after doing it and h gets out of there FAST. H says that he has been to therapy and he has learned and grow and ow has forgiven him. This was in 70% something. h obv has her doubts bc once a cheater always a cheater.
    I was very excited for this book and I bought it, I was waiting for summer break bc this book seemed like one perfect to read on the beach. I can’t imagine if I was not ready the punch that this “plot twist” would have caused on me. I can’t believe that at this point I have to search FOR EVERY BOOK. I don’t think I’m going to read it. I really love soulmate equation and the H was a true hero not like this cheater of wife/baby mama
    I’m giving up on this one. I am just not enjoying it. I don’t like the main character. She’s vulgar in not a good way. All she talks about is sex and dicks. And fine. Get on with your bad self. But how am i supposed to connect to a love story when all the MC talks about is dick. Even when she’s not getting any…. It was just distracting and made her seem so surface level. She had no real depth and i couldn’t connect. It definitely didn’t make me feel their connection either. To me it just sounded like an inevitable work fuck buddy situation. Not a love match 🙄🙄 i ultimately just didn’t care about the story.
    I really loved the first book in this series so it surprised me to not like this one. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    This was my first romance novel by Christina Lauren! 💘
    First, I thought the protagonist, Felicity Chen aka Fizzy, is a cool chick. She’s well portrayed as a strong female of Asian origins, highly intellectual, and with a fair portion of chutzpah striking back at men who have outdated opinions.
    The more I read into the story, however, I found Fizzy’s unshakable façade irritating. She is always steadfast even when the guy she adores rejects her several times. Moreover, she shows no vulnerability, and she is a tad too mega horny. She brags about her promiscuity and checks literally every man’s crotch. The male protagonist, Connor, is a weird guy. Even his British roots with that posh accent couldn’t make him come across charismatic. He made me fall asleep while reading.
    Sorry friends for my unpopular opinion about this novel. 2.5 stars ⭐️
    I remember reading the soulmate equation a long time ago and I know I liked it but I LOVED this!! Nothing hits harder than a read that actually holds the ability to make you laugh, smile so big your face hurts, swoon from the sickly sweet moments and gasping because the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife! The True Love Experiment gave you all of that!!
    I genuinely loved all the characters in this, but also the vulnerability and honesty that I saw between Fizzy and Connor had me over here in just a major pool of feels!! I really did feel their chemistry and when that third act conflict came in the tension literally had my chest constricting!! But the HEA was PERFECTION!!!
    Some things to expect:
    Forced Proximity
    Single Dad
    Friends To Lovers
    Reality Tv Show
    A book written for the romance bookworms and I ate up every moment! Highly recommend especially if you want to experience HOT British daddy Connor 🫠
    “Romance isn’t gratuitous bodice ripping. It can be, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but in the end, romance isn’t about the fantasy of being wealthy or beautiful or even being tied to the bed. It’s about elevating stories of joy above stories of pain. It’s about seeing yourself as the main character in a very interesting - or maybe even quiet - life that is entirely yours to control. It is, my friends, the fantasy of significance.”
    The discrepancy between my felt and actual age increased with each page turned in this book! I discovered I’m not the target audience for this author.
    They say curiosity killed the cat. I had to find out if I was missing anything with this new-to-me but ever-so-popular writing duo. Thank goodness I’ve got 8 more lives. 🙂
    “Truth is, you’ll never meet a book lover who hates the quiet.”
    I absolutely loved this, and I'm pretty sure this is one of my favorite Christina Lauren books ever! The premise with the reality show was right up my alley, and I loved that our FL was a romance author as I loved getting a glimpse into that world.
    Even though we all knew how this was going to end, I still enjoyed their whole romantic journey and I absolutely adored both Connor and Fizzy as characters. I was ecstatic when I read that Fizzy was getting her own book, as I loved her from back in The Soulmate Equation already. I loved that we got plenty of River and especially Jess as well!
    I can't help but love how they always manage to thank BTS in the acknowledgements as well. I PURPLE THEM!
    The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that they really glossed over the entire reason why Connor couldn't be with Fizzy in the first place at the end, like, how does Connor's future as a director look?? I feel like they made a big deal out of nothing tbh.
