A D.C. philanthropist suspects that her seemingly perfect employee is secretly plotting to steal her husband, her reputation—even her life—in this seductive novel of psychological suspense from the internationally bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish.

In this town, anyone is replaceable. . . .

After a tragic chain of events led to the deaths of their spouses two years ago, D.C. philanthropist Sloane Chase and Senator Whit Montgomery are finally starting to move on. The horrifying ordeal drew them together, and now they're ready to settle down again—with each other.

As Sloane returns to the world of White House dinners and political small talk, this time with her new husband, she's also preparing for an upcoming hip replacement—the latest reminder of the lupus diagnosis she's managed since her twenties. With both of their hectic schedules, they decide that hiring a home health aide will give Sloane the support and independence she needs post-surgery. And they find the perfect fit in Athena Karras.

Seemingly a godsend, Athena tends to Sloane, and even helps her run her charitable foundation. But Sloane slowly begins to deteriorate—a complication, Athena explains, of Sloane's lupus. As weeks go by, Sloane becomes sicker, and her uncertainty quickly turns to paranoia as she begins to suspect the worst. Why is Athena asking her so many probing questions about her foundation—about her past? And could Sloane be imagining the sultry looks between Athena and her new husband?

Riveting, fast-paced, and full of unbelievable twists, The Senator's Wife is a psychological thriller that upends the private homes of those who walk the halls of power. Because when you have it all, you have everything to lose.

The Senators Wife Reviews

  • Meredith (Slowly Catching Up)

    Soapy Drama

    “Love stories always ended badly.”

    The Senator’s Wife
is an aptly titled psychological thriller about a philanthropist married to a senator. When she falls ill, she begins to question all she knows. Is she seriously ill, or is more happening than meets the eye?

The plot is a like soap opera storyline. After Sloane's husband Robert, who was a senator, dies in a freak accident, she marries yet another senator, who happened to be her first husband’s cousin's widow, Whit. It's a little convoluted to say the least.

While recovering from surgery, Sloane is under the care of Athena, a mysterious woman hiding some secrets. When Sloane’s recovery takes a turn for the worse, she begins to suspect she is losing her mind, leading to one crazy showdown.

Chapters are divided between Sloane, Whit, and Athena. Sloane is not the sharpest tool, but it might seem that way since the reader is clued into more of what’s going on than she has knowledge of. Whit is slimy, and Athena’s character has the potential to be interesting, but sadly she is bland. There are also a few chapters narrated by Rosemary that were pointless in the end.

There are actually some decent twists and turns. At the same time, the plot is over-the-top, and one will have to suspend disbelief to buy in.

What got me was the writing. This is my first book by Liv Constantine, and while the narration involves too much telling instead of showing for my personal taste, the dialogue is what took me out of being able to enjoy this book. It is stilted, awkward, and overly dramatic. The characters talk at each other instead of to each other--their conversations lack connection and emotion.

Once again, I am an outlier. I can't recommend this one, but most readers have loved it. On the plus side, it is fast-paced and very easy to read, and the big reveal had me laughing in a good way.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review.

This is a slow-burn, chilling, and intelligent political/domestic thriller with a plotline reminiscent of Scandal meets Rebecca. The pressure, intrigue, mind games, and twists keep you on your toes.

Although the beginning of the book was impactful, I initially had second thoughts about investing in the story due to my antipathy towards the characters. However, the slow-building, captivating mystery and final twist made me eat my words.

In a traumatic chapter, everything changes for the main characters. Peg, a drunk wife obsessed with her husband's fidelity, threatens him with a gun and accidentally kills her cousin Robert. We then move to the present and find out that Whit, the husband, has married Robert's widow Sloane, who suffers from lupus.

Although I felt sympathy for Sloane, I couldn't connect with her decision to marry a man who was presumed to be cheating on his wife, who was killed in the same room. Whit is a great manipulator, and he may have convinced her of his innocence, but it still rubbed me the wrong way. I also didn't like Athena, the healthcare worker they hired with a hidden agenda, or Rosemary, despite her intelligence.

Emmy, Sloane and Whit's daughter, and Camille, Rosemary's daughter, were the most sympathetic characters, but unfortunately, they weren't narrators. Madeline was just a stereotype of a femme fatale.

The book is a slow-burn thriller. The first half doesn't have much going on, but the pace picks up in the last third with delicious twists and smart outcomes that will make you scream "Holy hell!" Sloane's deteriorating health condition, her hallucinations, suspicions about Athena, and secret political meetings all make the story more intriguing. Everything is wrapped up adroitly with logical explanations.

I need a meze platter with a bottle of ouzo to celebrate my reading experience!

Although I was initially disappointed, one of my favorite thriller duos created another smart thriller that concludes brilliantly. I'm giving it four stars for its political intrigue and girl power.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group/Ballantine/Bantam for sharing this highly anticipated digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest opinions.

My siblings like to describe my style as "senator's wife." If they're feeling particularly funny, "third senator's wife." Jokes aside, I had to read this, domestic thrillers be damned. Reader, I did not have to read this. Sloane marries not one, but two senators, in quick succession. Did new hubby murder old hubby? Do we trust him? Do we trust the home help? Do we trust ourselves? The twist isn't twisty.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher.

Two years after the death of her husband, Robert, and Whit's wife, Peg, Sloane and Senator Whit Montgomery get married. Sloane has Lupus and needs hip replacement surgery soon after they are married and she needs someone to help her with her recovery. They both agree on hiring a girl named Athena. She seems more than qualified on paper, but as soon as Sloane gets home from the hospital and is under Athena's care, she starts to take a downward spiral and becomes more sick than ever. Could Athena be the one responsible for Sloane's declining health? Or is it someone else?

WOW!! These sisters did it again!! This book had me on the edge of my seat and I could not put it down. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the final twist got me! THE SENATOR'S WIFE is going to be a big hit! I will be recommending it to everyone I know. Make sure to add this one to your TBR now, you will not be disappointed!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is so hard to review. I love this author(s) books and was so happy to get an advanced copy.

BUT……I felt all the people and dialogue were one dimensional, I couldn’t have cared less about Sloane or Rosemary or Madelyn or anyone really.I wanted to, but they just all seemed to be “characters”. When the twist happened it really could have been perfect but at that point I didn’t care what happened as I had no feelings for any one at all. I did like Athena and the different POVs.

I struggled thru it, chapters were quick and it had potential but IMO was no substance 😞

Thank you so much to Netgalley, publisher and author for my advanced copy. While this was not for me I can’t wait to read more from this duo and encourage others to try.

Shocking and Scandalous! This book has it all, family drama, secrets, lies, politics and MURDER! Absolutely loved each and every surprise. Highly recommend! I thank Netgalley and Random House Publishing for the opportunity to read this great book.

Another amazing twist by the masters! A colorful and highly developed cast of characters drive this compelling thriller page after page. The Senator's Wife is steeped in family drama and the corrupting influence of power in the nation's capital. I did not see the end coming and better yet, knew it was coming. If Christmas morning was a book - this would be it!

Liv Constantine books always get me thinking about the domestic thriller genre because they know how to create these over-the-top soap opera / telenovela type of stories and make them so fun! My favorite of theirs was 2021's THE STRANGER IN THE MIRROR, so I was excited to pick up their newest, THE SENATOR'S WIFE. I had a fun time with this one, but ultimately figured out the ending way too soon, like too early on for my liking. That doesn't mean that I didn't have fun however. I think their method to creating a fun domestic thriller continues with this book, and I hope they'll stump me next time, because I just have to rush and read whatever they write.

A thrilling new story from Liv Constantine set in the dark heart of Washington DC, The Senator’s Wife is full of grit, grift, and tons of insider secrets. Insidiously clever and utterly mesmerizing.

  • Cyndi

I’ve read all of Liv Constantine’s books and am a huge fan but this unfortunately wasn’t my for a couple of reasons. First off, the plot was very similar to an earlier book by this author so not too original. Secondly, I figured out what was going on very early on in the book, so I was not surprised by the ending or any of the plot twists. With that said, it is a fast and entertaining read which will definitely appeal to a lot of psychological thriller readers, it just wasn’t Constantine’s best work ever.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Edelweiss, Bantam and Liv Constantine for my complimentary e-copy ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

A soapy political thriller for your enjoyment! Sloane was happily married living a perfect wealthy life in Washington DC when her husband was killed in a murder suicide. She remarries fairly quickly and the stress of the years begin to impact her Lupus. Finding everyday life a challenge, she hires an aid to assist her. But is Athena a bit too good? As Sloane become sicker, she fears that Athena has ulterior motives in working for her and she might actually want to take her place! If you like soapy thrillers, larger than life events or just want a political based dometic thriller, The Senator's Wife is for you! #RandomHouse #TheSenatorsWife #LivConstantine

“Because when you have it all, you have everything to loose.”

Liv Constantine, you have done it again.

If there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that if I want a book that will always deliver, it will always be you, both. 😉

(Fun Fact : Liv Constantine is actually a pen name for TWO sisters, Lynne and Valerie Constantine. )

If it sounds like I’m talking about politics, I am 🤣.

I’ve never been one to look to politics for entertainment. In truth, I avoid it. However, when one of your favorite authors puts out a book, you read it, it doesn’t matter what it’s about .

First, let’s just admire this cover. Is it not stunning ? Wait until you uncover what is inside the margins.

To say I’m left scrambling for words would never do this book justice. So I’m going to do my best to share my thoughts with you…

Every thriller needs a villain and I promise you, you will never see this one coming. That’s how Constantine does it though, right? They finds a way to get in our heads and play with our mind.

When you love psychological thrillers as much as I do, you become hard to fool. Constantine manages to get me every time.

The suspense that built kept me in suspense . The first chapter opens with a bang, literally. You are thrust on this journey that will leave your belly aching, spine tingling and heart in your throat. I swear I had to remind myself to breathe. The major twist wasn’t one I anticipated and at one point I was begging to be wrong (I was). When the conclusion hit, I was left with biggest “book shock of my life .

This book is going to be a doozy to get over .

To all my fellow Constantine fans, I don’t need to tell you what to do, it goes without saying.

I’ll see you all on the check out line 😉

Sloane and Whit are newly married after a tragedy took both of their spouses (Peg and Robert) from them. Sloane was previously married to Robert and Whit was previously married to Peg, which creates a complicated dynamic right from the start. Sloane has lupus, an autoimmune disease, which affects her day-to-day mobility and requires her to get a hip replacement, so Whit and Sloane decide to hire a temporary live-in caretaker during her recovery. Athena is recommended to them by a placement agency and quickly becomes a daily part of their lives. As Sloane's health continues to decline and Whit spends more and more time in the political spheres he hopes to influence, Athena's intentions toward Sloane and Whit become unclear. Why is there strange white stuff floating on top of Sloane's drinks? Why can't she remember basic things Whit says he has told her? And why is it taking so long to get brain scan results from her doctor? The situation continues to spiral as Sloane hands over the majority of her philanthropic work to Whit, and Sloane realizes that the big expenditures she is seeing were never discussed with her. It doesn't help that her laptop and phone are missing because, as Whit and Athena say, they do not want her to "become more stressed by overexerting herself." Is Sloane the victim of a vicious disease or is something more sinister going on?

This book was a late-night page-turner, and I loved every moment I spent reading it! And that twist at the end?! *Chef's Kiss* Your hatred for certain characters will change to love and your love to hate more than once while reading this book! It was amazing, and I feel so lucky to have been able to read this before it officially comes out!

Thank you to Netgalley, Liv Constantine (Lynne and Valerie- the two sisters who write together under the pseudonym), and Random House- Bantam for sending me an e-ARC of The Senator's Wife! This read will keep you up all night with its high-paced plot and intriguing characters! It is a worthy book to add to your 2023 TBR.

I always look forward to a new Liv Constantine book, and this one did not disappoint.

It was fast-paced and kept me guessing right up till the end. There were plenty of secrets and surprises.

  • Monica Hills

Oh, that twist! You have to love a Liv Constantine book because you know there is going to be an incredible twist somewhere. I thought I had it figured out but I was completely wrong.

The Senator's Wife is told from multiple perspectives. The first one is Sloane, who is a senator's wife. She is deeply in love with her husband Robert and life would be a fairy tale except Sloane suffers from Lupus and her husband's cousin, Peg, is an absolute mess. Peg is married to Whit, who is also one of the perspectives in the novel. The other two points of view are Rosemary, Robert's mother, and Athena, a home health aide who is going to help Sloane after she recovers from hip surgery. A horrific tragedy occurs and Sloane and Whit's lives are forever changed. The two seek solace in one another's company however there seems to be a malicious force that is threatening their happiness.

This is a novel you have to read until the end because you won't see it coming. Another fantastic read by these authors!

Thank you to Bantam Publishing and NetGalley for this arc read.

Two years ago, Robert, a US senator, was accidentally shot and killed by his cousin Peg, also the wife of a senator, who was aiming for her own husband, Whit. Now Robert’s widow, Sloane, united in grief with Peg’s husband, has surprisingly married Senator Whit (who Peg accused of adultery). Sloane is a likable character, wealthy in her own right, a respected leader of a well-endowed women’s shelter foundation that she ran with Robert. But she also has lupus and a necessary hip surgery has apparently put her into a prolonged lupus flare — at its worst, the disease can kill, leave its victims exhausted and bedridden, and give them hallucinations. Whit is given more control of the foundation and he has hired an attractive caregiver/assistant, Athena, who definitely has a mysterious agenda of her own. Robert’s suspicious mother, Rosemary, is investigating both Whit and Athena. Added to the mix is super-bitch Madelyn, wife of one of Whit’s biggest donors, rumored to have been the reason Peg accused him of adultery, who is now mocking the weakened Sloane. What’s really going on?

It’s impossible to not root for Sloane. She really wants to trust Whit (but is he gaslighting her?); she does become suspicious of Athena (is the girl flirting with her husband, too?); and she’s trying to banish Madelyn. But she’s getting weaker and weaker — is it the lupus or the “herbal supplements” Athena is adding to her drinks and meals? This is a steadily unraveling mystery with Sloane at the center. Is she paranoid from the disease’s toll or is she being played by someone or more than just one person?

I was hooked from the beginning. The ending was a surprise to me (I took some guesses only to be proven wrong). This turned out to one of those unputdownable surprises — a twisty thriller. 5 stars!

The story starts off with a bang. Literally. When the spouses of Sloane Chase and Senator Whit Montgommery are killed in a tragedy, the two move forward by finding love together. Sloane’s life in the limelight of political events comes to a halt with her chronic Illness and the story takes off from there.
The Senator’s Wife is a slow burning one. It’s featuring a naive wife, easy to hate husband, and a home caregiver with a secret. Each character fits their role well, however the amount of gaslighting happening on every page drove me crazy. But this did make me like and sympathize for main character Sloane. Overall, the short chapters kept me engaged and I was satisfied by the ending. This novel drags a bit with the continued scheme, until BAM, the big reveal happens with 10% the book left. It's surprising as I didn't think the culprit was smart enough to pull everything off. Then everything is wrapped up neatly at the end…
The writing was also alittle lackluster and not representative of a seasoned writing duo like Liv Constantine. If you are a fan of the tried and true psychological thrillers, this is not for you. I honestly don't even know what genre I would characterize this as? Cozy mystery? Beach read?

Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group- Ballantine/Bantam for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. The senators wife is due out in may 2023

Another successful thriller from Liv Constantine! I could not put it down and had to find out what was going on. The multiple POVs made for a dynamic plot and added to the suspense. The middle dragged slightly, but it picked back up and I didn’t see the twist coming. I love how Constantine empowers her characters and shows how woman can believe and support each other. This domestic thriller is one you don’t want to miss!

Well I can sum this up with one word….boring. I was so excited about this book! I came close to putting it out into the universe that this was going to be one of my top reads for 2023. But no. It was a total yawn fest. Nothing about this was believable. The dialogue wasn’t even believable. The beginning started with a bang…literally and then just went no where. I have adored all of Liv Constantine’s books but this one fell short. I did finish it because I kept hoping she would redeem herself at some point.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you! Thank you! @netgalley and @randomhousepublishing for this Arc in exchange for an honest review. I kept hoping I’d get approved for it and then I had given up hope on getting this book. But then I finally did get approved. I was so happy! I dropped my other book which I just started, and began reading this book right away.
From the very beginning I was hooked. It was so fast paced and juicy right from the start and I couldn’t stop reading it. And I have to say the twists in this book were great too. That first one! 😳 I was literally picking my jaw up off the ground. It was so good. 👏🏻👏🏻 I could honestly see this as a tv movie or something.
I don’t want to say too much, so I’ll just set the stage for you. You take Washington DC, politics, money, power, betrayal, and even murder, put them all together and you’ve got yourself a great little book that takes you on a crazy ride. I loved it. Well done! I would recommend this book to anyone. If you loved The Last Mrs. Parrish, by the same author, like I did, I think you will love this one too.

"The Senator's Wife" was one twisty book! Sloane is happily married to Robert when he's murdered along with his cousin Peg. Sloane then marries Peg's husband, Whit. Throughout the book, Sloane's condition (lupus) deteriorates after she has a hip replacement and Whit hires Athena (a home healthcare worker) to take care of Sloane. Then things go downhill and Sloane starts hallucinating and getting sicker. Is Athena trying to kill her to be with Whit? I honestly didn't guess the twist at the end. I thought that the entire book was fast-paced and thrilling and couldn't wait to see how it ended. 5 stars!

  • Jackie Sunday

Cleverly written, this fast-paced political thriller in DC is bound to turn pages.

Two couples socialize together: Senator Robert and Sloane Chase, and Senator Whit and Peg Montgomery. Peg drinks more than she should as she accuses her “pig and a bastard” husband, Whit, of having an affair while they are together at the Chase vacation house. When she wakes up angry the next morning, she pulls a gun on him but misses. She instead kills Robert and then she pulls the trigger on herself.

Two years later, it’s no surprise that Sloane and Whit are in love and get married. Sloane has incredible wealth and this should mean great comfort for the couple and in politics. But when there’s money, there are also complications. She has lupus and needs hip surgery. The couple hires the pretty Athena who seems perfect to help out. But can she be trusted when anything can happen?

I started reading this late in the evening which wasn’t the best idea as it was hard to stop at 3:00 in the morning when I was only halfway. The chapters are relatively short and has the readers on the edge. Each one alters with five character’s points of view which works. There’s no stopping with the suspense.

There’s an incredible buildup to a surprising ending. I thought I knew what was going to come about but it was one of those blown-away moments. It would be an interesting book club review with the influence of big money, a major medical diagnosis and relationships.

My thanks to Bantam Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read this advanced copy with an expected release date of May 23, 2023.

Everyone I know loved The Last Mrs Parrish. I haven’t read it yet but jumped at the chance to get an ARC from NetGalley of The Senator’s Wife as I know it is on many “most anticipated books of 2023” lists. I’m not sure if I would have enjoyed this more on audio (narrator TBD), but I lost patience while reading with how many times I had to suspend disbelief in order for this plot to work: Sloane marrying Wit, the widower of the killer of her husband 2yrs after their deaths (both couples were close friends for decades— the dead wife and husband were cousins); the live-in caretaker that Sloane suspects is drugging her early on yet makes no attempt to replace her until it’s too late; the big reveal at the end where the caretaker, and trained naturopath, Athena didn’t realize Sloane was being poisoned; the cast of supporting characters who were more caricature than three dimensional people; and the cringe dialogue that abounded. In the hands of a good narrator, maybe the belief could be more easily suspended. But as it stands, I was skimming through the last half of the book just to see the end reveal. I’ll be interested to follow the reviews once the book releases to see how it landed with most people.

Liv Constantine is one of my favorite authors! Their latest novel doesn’t disappoint, if you’ve read them before and enjoyed the stories they weave, you’ll be sure to love this one too. We follow a few different ladies along this journey, as well as, of course, The Senator. There are quite a few people to keep track of, so make sure you are paying close attention! If you’ve read from this author before, you know they always have a trick up their sleeves. This one will keep you guessing until the very end. Look for this on shelves in May!!

Thank you to the publisher for the ARC via Netgalley!

Sloane Chase and Senator Whit Montgomery have had their fair share of misfortune and grief as both lose their spouses in a tragic and horrible event at the beginning of the novel. Two years have gone by and they find comfort and a future together moving forward as husband and wife. Whit has always been a bit of a charmer but Sloane doesn’t believe the rumors of infidelity that surround him and has faith that their marriage will be a strong one. Unfortunately, having struggled with a lupus diagnosis for years, Sloane finds she is in need of a hip surgery and decides to search out a home health aid post surgery so she won’t disrupt her Senator husband’s schedule. Enter Athena, who seems to fit the job description but also seems to have an agenda of her own. Can Sloane trust this woman? Is something amiss with her beautiful young aid? Or is it her paranoia and cloudy thinking brought on from her medicine post op. This was a fast paced novel that had me guessing throughout the story. . It was such an entertaining and hugely surprising twist that brought the novel to an end. I really enjoyed this novel and gave it a solid 4 stars!

Liv Constantine has done it again! I was so excited for this book because I loved the last Mrs Parish and it didn’t disappoint. It has all the twists and turns you have come to expect from them.

This book alternated between 4 narrators and they were all wildly unreliable. I found my option about what was happening changing with almost every chapter.

I devoured this book. I couldn’t put it down. I just had to find out how they were going to tie it all together and I was not disappointed.

Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgalley + in exchange for an honest opinion. Thank you Netgalley and Ballantine Books for the ARC.

Before I received this book, I thought this book is going to be dark and full of twists and politic shits. The characters will be super genius and cunning till the end of the book. Sadly, this book is none of those. This book is purely drama, psychological drama with some murders involved (roughly 3 people, 3 side characters, dead in this book.)

This book is about a story of DC philanthropist Sloane Chase and Senator Whit Montgomery after a tragic chain of events led to the deaths of their spouses two years ago. They finally are starting to move on and somehow now they’re ready to settle down again—with each other. Sloane has lupus since that she's been ignoring since her twenties and now she's ready to get surgery. In order to do that, with Sloane and Whit's hectic schedules, they decide that hiring a home health aide will give Sloane the support and independence she needs postsurgery. And they find the perfect fit in Athena Karras. But who is this perfect, young, and beautiful Athena? she's not what she's been talking about.

As weeks go by, Sloane becomes sicker, and her uncertainty quickly turns to paranoia as she begins to suspect the worst. Is her new husband cheating? Why is Athena asking her so many probing questions about her foundation—as well as about her past? And could Sloane be imagining the sultry looks between Athena and her new husband?

This book is basically 75% [cheating (other women) drama + suspense + hallucination] + 25% [one out of nowhere twist + ending]. I nearly DNF'ed this book but I pushed through and I definitely help this book's rating. If I DNF'ed this book, I'm going to give this book a 1 star but now I somehow finished this book and give it 2 stars.

5 chapters in we can really know that Whit's a liar and a cheater. He's been cheating on Peg since day one. Peg has been suspicious but nobody's on her side and now she died. Sloane obvs didn't read all the red flags and just married Whit just because he's handsome and seems to love her too.
Then we get another young and hot woman, Athena, in the house which is great for Whit. I really hate this other women trope with a male main character (who is a liar and a cheater too) being sooooo dumb. Whit is a horny cheap-ass Senator who also cheats and lies every time he could.

I like the ending, it's pretty okay and I'm happy to see Whit in prison for all he's been doing but I don't like the twist. There's one twist that came out of nowhere 5 or 4 chapters before the end of the book. It's so obvs that the readers won't know that shit because where is the hint????

I can sense that the author really really wants to impress the reader and make a twist that is sooo phenomenal, it doesn't make any sense. Then I realize that there are people out there that will like and eat this shit up so I'm clearly not the target audience. I won't read any books by this author because this is her newest release and it's not even good.
