Reading this one for the second time because, well, it’s Clifford’s origin story! The first time around I read a library book. This time around it is one of Mum’s many new hide-and-seek Clifford books. I hide them for her and she finds them. It’s so much fun hiding presents for people at random times. I highly suggest you try it!

Anyway, Clifford. While there are a few sad parts in this book, ultimately it’s a story of the power of love between a child and their pet. Clifford may have been the runt of his litter but with Emily Elizabeth’s love, this little red puppy became the big red dog readers adore. Aww! 💕

Clifford's secret origin story! Emily Elizabeth's love and a desperate wish turn a runty red puppy that might not make it through the winter into the biggest dog in the world. It's a shame Clifford got so big though, because puppy Clifford is just about the cutest little thing in the world.

You bet your ass I read this just to complete my goodreads challenge. This was sad but cute, like all stories revolved around dogs. I wish I had clifford for a pet.

another one for pop sugar. Emily Elizabeth is an icon.

I read this to my Grandsons this morning while we waited for the bus to pick up the 7 year old, and he asked if his school library would have more books about Clifford, as "That was really fun.". I suggested he ask. I'm thankful for libraries, school and community, for who could afford to buy enough books to wet and sustain a child's interest in reading? If the school doesn't have them the local library will, and we'll all be reading more about Clifford, the Big Red Dog.

You can start with any Clifford book, but this one explains how Emily Elizabeth got Clifford and we watch him grow from a runt to his current size - in just 2 days. I love that the grown ups don't seem to notice anything unusual happening. The 2 year old loves the picture of a crane lifting Clifford out of the back garden and into a moving truck to take him to the country. He turns to that page and talks about it over and over. These books are modern classics for a reason - they really appeal to kids.

amazing. tiny little puppy becomes world's largest dog through the power of LOVE

  • Rayjan Koehler

Just as good a children's story as I remember reading when I was little.

It was cute. It reminded me of my childhood and I loved that.

Clifford series books are among my favorite for young children as they send positive messages that children relate to and children are naturally captivated by this adorable charming character so they really pay attention to the underlying messages the books convey. My daughter loved them. She's outgrown them but she will still tell you that she loves Clifford the big red dog.

  • Andrea

This is a must read for all those who love Clifford books. It's Clifford's origin story. Was he born a normal size and grew to be large? Was he born super big from super big parents? Is he from another planet? How did he get so big? You will have to read to find out!

P.S. This book is more emotional than I would have thought an Clifford book would be, but I absolutely loved it!

This is the one I remember from my childhood. Clifford starts as the runt of the litter then grows up to be bigger than a house. As a kid, I didn't get the implication that it was the girl's wish that made him bigger.

My daughter loves the big red dog. Personally, I found the tiny puppy to be adoreable. I could read a series about that.

This book is great for children especially when they learn to start reading. It teaches great morals and ideals for everyone to have and great general life lessons.

  • Michelle (driftingsong)

I vaguely remember being read Clifford stories as a child (and reading them myself) but didn't remember the origin story, hence wanting to read this. SO SUPER CUTE!

  • Illey

Love it! It is good to see where it all began.

  • ShamSham

The shocking origin story of Clifford the Red.

I've been buying books for my nieces and nephews and have ordered a couple Clifford books for each of their households. The ads for the movie look so great, I regret that I had missed them growing up. Of course, I had been teaching for 5 years when the first book came out, and I was teaching middle school.. So I got Clifford, the Small Red Puppy for the daughter of my house elves and took the opportunity to read it. These are lovely books for young children, up to probably 7 years old. What child can resist a puppy? I know this child (me) can't.

I haven't met many youngsters who don't love Clifford the Big Red Dog. In this reissue of the classic story from the 1970s, Emily Elizabeth gives the background behind her beloved pet's enormous size. As her friend Martha is bragging about her dog, Emily Elizabeth describes how she adored Clifford, the runt of the litter, but worried that he might not survive to become a healthy dog. Apparently, her love was enough to save him since Clifford began to grow and grow and grow. Her friend has nothing to say after hearing that story. The trademark red and black illustrations with Clifford's distinctive eyes on a white/beige background are pleasing to the eyes and make the affectionate canine easily recognizable.

A cute book with Clifford's origin story. It is very interesting to see why Clifford is a big as he is.

As with the first Clifford book, simple narration and nice pictures.

Overall, and interesting and entertaining book.

When Emily Elizabeth got her choice of puppies, she chose the smallest one, the runt of the litter and named him Clifford. He was not expected to live long because he was so tiny, so Emily Elizabeth made a wish for him to grow. when he started to grow he became too big to live in the house! Cute start to the series. Nicely illustrated.

Clifford's origin story. I can't it took me until I was an adult to read this, but my son really enjoyed the book. Clifford was a tiny, sickly puppy and Elizabeth begged for him to grow and be healthy. So what happened? Clifford started growing and didn't stop until she told him he was perfect.

I love dog stories. I love Clifford. This was a cute story about how Clifford was a runt and grew to be the wonderful dog we all know and love. This was a fun read for me as it was a bit of nostalgia. I hope my niece likes it too.

  • Alicia Tavernier

This book is a definite favorite of mine. a tiny puppy who was the runt grows and grows. a heartwarming book about a puppy. I enjoy the cute illustrations. I rated this book 5 stars out of 5 stars because when I was younger I was obsessed with Clifford.

  • Ellen McKeown

The 1st book in the “Clifford” series needs no introduction. How Emily Elizabeth got her big red dog reminds us that life takes some much-unexpected turns. Clifford was the runt of the litter (so was Wilbur in Charlotte’s Web, hmm) who became the largest dog in the world because he was loved.

  • E & E’s Mama

Elliot has watched a few episodes of Clifford, so he recognized this book right away at the library. He enjoyed seeing Clifford grow bigger and bigger as Emily Elizabeth tells the story of how Clifford cane into her life.

Read when he was 19months old

A cute story about how love is nurturing and can help us survive, grow and thrive. Emily Elizabeth loves her runty little puppy, Clifford! Through that love, he grows to be a giant of a dog and the rest is history.
