Good preaching is not simply a matter of communicating the gospel message. Rather, it is an invitation to encounter the living God who dwells within that message.

Distilling forty years of preaching experience into a single book, God Is in the House is a highly practical tool for all those seeking to strengthen their preaching ministry. It draws on Scripture’s many images of God as architect and builder to guide its readers through the process of shaping effective sermons. Both manifesto and manual, it addresses the overall role and significance of preaching, while also exploring the specific elements a sermon should contain. Full-length examples are included for illustration, and each chapter has practical exercises to aid the reader in integrating new tools into their homiletic practice.

This book offers a fresh and imaginative model for thinking about the process of designing and delivering sermons. It is an excellent resource for both experienced and developing preachers.

God Is in the House Reviews

  • Rick Dugan

For those who preach, this is a helpful book that combines both technique with heart. Using the rooms of a house as a metaphor, Woods addresses the technical side of preaching including connecting points, using illustrations, introductions/conclusions, and handling Scripture. He also addresses the spiritual formation and prayer life of the preacher, the needs and maturity of those who hear the sermon, and the atmosphere that the sermon creates. This holistic approach is refreshing. The application of each chapter is focused primarily on western styles of communication, though the metaphor can be adapted to other cultures as well.

The final chapter, "Preaching Jesus from All of Scripture," is worth the price of the book. Quoting P.T. Forsyth,

The Gospel was there before the Bible, and it created the Bible, as it creates the true preacher and the true sermon everywhere. And it is for the sake and service of the Gospel that both the Bible and the preacher exist.

It seems that contemporary preaching has drifted from its christological center. Woods calls us back.

If you need to refresh your preaching creativity or if you've never read a book on preaching, this is an accessible, readable, and holistic resource that will develop your skills and enrich your preaching. You, and those who listen to you, will be blessed.
