Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd: Teacher Guide (Novel Units) Reviews

If I had to recommend a book for everyone to read, it would be The Secret Life of Bees. Set in rural South Carolina during the Civil Rights Movement, a white girl and her caretaker seek refuge with a family of black beekeeping sisters. This story is remarkable, and tells a emotive narrative about female power, the Black Madonna, and motherhood. The Secret Life of Bees is a reminder that we can spend all of our lives searching for love, but it is only where we are not looking, that we find it.

  • Pia Berglund

This is a heartwarming story about people learning the meaning of love and how to love. I really enjoyed the strong, independent, female characters and watching them learn and grow the more I read. The story has a nice flow and was enjoyable , a bit slow the first part but the last part I would not want to stop reading.

A delightful book. If you liked To Kill A Mockingbird, you'll probably enjoy this.

  • Timothy Morrison

Like the secret life of primes added to the prophets put into civil rights era. Daughters of Mary is Catholicism plus civil rights plus Judaism plus Mormonism plus Earthseed

  • Jeff Bobin

Interesting well written story with some surprising twists and turns.

This will make you think about civil rights in the 60s and probably from a different perspective then you anticipate more than once.

I found the ending somewhat weak and not flushed out enough.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is a masterpiece. I could read it over and over and over. I fell in love with each one of her characters. The story showed me that it is possible for all races of people to get along if they so choose to do so.

I loved, truly loved this book!!

  • MaryAnn

How is it possible to write so beautifully about a subject and characters so seeped in pain?

  • Donna

Not sure why good reads does not have the secret life of bees as just a book and not in some collection or teachers guide. What a great book! I truly enjoyed this from cover to end.

  • Emory Rhodes

really good lessons in the book and it was an interesting read, but didn't captivate me as much as I thought it would.
